Doing TSA, MAT, ECAA, etc

DS1 is preparing for ECAA exam next week, which involves TSA-style problem solving questions and MAT-style questions too. He is very demoralised that his scores are not improving, and says what's the point in practising as they don't seem to be the sort of thing that improves with practice.
How are everyone else's DCs finding it? Anyone got experience of how this works?

Have a look on the Starting Uni 2020 thread on Higher Ed. Most Y13's parents are on there and might be able to advise. May DS isn't doing any of the above entrance tests, he's just doing STEP in June.
