I agree. Seems like a lifetime ago.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/08/2019 09:56

Being the emotional sap of our little group here, I feel totally choked up reading the threads in higher of success and disappointments. I don't even know these dc Grin I'm going to have to ban myself from reading them..

I pointed out to DS that tuition starts a month tomorrow. All his stuff is boxed up in the garage and that's what I'll be taking over there. If he hasn't made contact with his new flatmates and found out what they are sharing in the kitchen then he'll be arriving with no knives and no pans. I'm looking at it as valuable ife experience and less for me to pack into the car.

FantasyandHope if you are still here, I'd love to here how your daughter is getting on, drop me a private message if you have a moment.

HesMyLobster · 15/08/2019 13:20

Haha Kitten I have done exactly the same today! Smile
DD has gone out to celebrate with one of her best friends who bombed last year, re took a couple of A levels this year and has done brilliantly and into first choice uni. I sobbed!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/08/2019 18:43

That's brilliant Lobster I'm so pleased for your dds friend Grin

I think dds stuff is boxed up in different places. It's funny to think of last summer and all the getting things together and this year, I've not got a clue. She doesn't start back until October so that's ages away.

I've been completely wrapped up in it all again today waiting for my niece and nephews results. It still seems such an important day.
I have piles of stuff for my 2 in attic and shed - hoping to send off in Autumn without too much resorting/replacing.
Hope all your DC and families are having a chill summer!! I am mostly but events at Hong Kong airport made me very stressed a few days ago as DD has to travel from there soon!

UrsulaPandress · 20/08/2019 17:31

The fb group is getting ridiculous. So many parents wanting to do everything for their child including staying for days when they take them. And wanting fb groups for individual University parents.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2019 17:56

There does seem to be a lot of angst on there. I think some of them could do with a bit of bucking up rather than support in mutual wailing.

I did mention grips the other day and was met with a question mark.

I'm glad it's not just me Ursula. I have been mentally handing out grips to parents who have been sobbing every night at the thought of their DC going away.

I saw the post about parents groups as well. It's university not school. I will be worried about DD not making friends and not settling in, but I am looking forward to her starting the next chapter in her life.

She has been away a lot this year so we are getting used to her not being here much.

Bronzegate · 21/08/2019 11:53

I'm very grateful to be having a year off this year in terms of public exams and results.

DS is off to Reading today. Let's hope he doesn't get all his valuables stolen this year. The group gets smaller each year and this year there are only three of them. I think it's seen as a teenager's festival.

Bronzegate · 21/08/2019 11:59

I've been following the Facebook group with interest. I do feel some sympathy for the parents, especially if this is the first person in the family to attend university, but at some point you do have to let go and let them get on with it.

I supported DS with the obligatory admin, form-filling and paperwork (he's a lot more confident with these this year) but he was on his own when it came to organising optional things like freshers' wristbands or communal kitchen equipment.

UrsulaPandress · 21/08/2019 12:33

DD is off to LeedsFest tomorrow.

She went to Boomtown and loved it but had all her food and her sleeping bag stolen. I was bloody outraged. They think they know who did it, but didn't bother to report it.....

It was her really good sleeping bag that I bought her for her gold DofE expedition. She has bought a £10 job from Tesco to take to Leeds.

She went to the Welfare Tent, who offered to sell her a blanket - she didn't bother, just slept in trackie bottoms and a hoodie.

She has already mislaid her purse containing her bank card and driving licence so took her passport to Boomtown. Thank goodness she kept that about her person so that is safe.

I think she is getting worse rather than better. Ordered a new bank card which arrived but has now been left in her boyfriend's car so she has transferred money to her friend's card to spend last night as they were visiting their new student house. She has just phoned to say she thinks she may have stolen fuel from a pay at the pump fuel station. She thought she had followed the instructions but no payment appeared on her mate's card. I never use pay at the pump as we have fuel cards through the business. Shall I expect the police to knock on my door?

TapasForTwo · 21/08/2019 13:11

DD is volunteering at Leeds Festival this year. I have just taken her in the car to the (walking distance from our house) station as she is so heavily laden. She will have less to carry back as the two very full carrier bags are full of food. She needs to report in by 4pm today. At least the weather looks promising.

She has just phoned to say she thinks she may have stolen fuel from a pay at the pump fuel station

I think you have to register your card before the pump will let you fill up. This is how the ones at Morrisons operate.

UrsulaPandress · 21/08/2019 13:28

She says she put the card in the pump and put the pin in and it let her have fuel - so hopefully all will be well.

What is your DD doing at Leeds?

TapasForTwo · 21/08/2019 13:36

I'm not exactly sure. She applied to volunteer because it is a cheap way to go to the festival. They pay up front, then get a refund after they have turned up to all their shifts. Her first shift is a night shift which she is dreading as she has CFS. Apparently the campsite and facilities are better for the volunteers than for the festival goers. Although that can't be difficult. The campsite is the most primitive I have ever seen, and the loos are beyond awful.

I expect it will be mostly about giving people directions and litter picking. She will have a shift on the Monday morning which will probably be about tidying up.

Bronzegate · 21/08/2019 14:07

TapasForTwo
Hope she is able to manage her health needs OK.
DS said that the line-up at Leeds is better than Reading this year, so two of his usual Reading gang have gone to Leeds instead. It's much further from us though.

TapasForTwo · 21/08/2019 15:31

So do I.
I thought they usually had the same bands at both. DD is keen to see the Foo Fighters. She isn't working while they are on. As she has been on a gap year she could enjoy Slam Dunk guilt free this year. Unfortunately the weather spoiled it a bit.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/08/2019 18:40

Festivals sound so grim and having done clear up at one of them I'm so glad that DD has no desire to go to them.

Last time dd was at Leeds she had a black bin bag of mud and crap land on her head. It covered her head completely and she thought she’d gone blind. She has very long hair. It was rank. And she’s going back Hmm

Bronzegate · 21/08/2019 19:20

A friend who is now in his early 40s was persuaded by a friend to go to one of these festivals for the day (to see a particular band). He ended up getting a pint of warm piss thrown all over him.

UrsulaPandress · 21/08/2019 19:46

That’s common apparently. Piss in a bottle. Throw it over the crowd.

Another reason never to go.

HesMyLobster · 21/08/2019 20:28

Oh gosh Confused my DD2 has gone happily off to Leeds today with a bunch of friends.
I was worried about them getting there safely (the boy driving them nearly 3 hours only passed his test a couple of weeks ago! Shock)
But now I know they are there and tent is up I've moved on to worrying about the actual festival. DD will not cope well with flying bags of crap and bottles of pee!
I thought we'd escaped the horror of Reading and Leeds as last year, although a lot of their friends were going DD1 and DD2 opted to go together to Boardmasters instead, which seems far more friendly and civilised. I'd hoped DD2 would do the same this year but she was swayed by the Foo Fighters.
Don't think I'll be sleeping an awful lot for the next few days . .
DD1 meanwhile has got the keys to her 2nd year house and she and her housemates are spending the week there prettifying it scrubbing the toilets and putting fairy lights up!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/08/2019 21:14

Sounds like you need industrial quantities of disinfectant this weekend Lobster. Grin
