Have now heard from him. He has met most of the people on his corridor and they seem nice. Today he needs to find the bus stop to get to the campus, collect his wristband, register with the GP and attend a welcome talk. This involves finding four different places. Due to his dyspraxia he struggles with directions and maps. Due to his anxiety he finds it difficult to ask anyone the way. So today is going to be a challenge.

Downeyhouse · 23/09/2018 09:19

Sorry for your daughter Fantasy that is a rubbish situation to be in :(

Good luck to your ds today Third.

Ds sent me a message an hour ago. He is never awake at this time on a Sunday morning!

Has met his neighbor and really likes him.
So all is good.

Currently on the Eurotunnel heading home.

Looking forward to reading the letter he has left me on my bed :)

raspberryrippleicecream · 23/09/2018 09:28

DD had quite a hefty prepayment on hers, then she has 8 direct debits from October

DS1 uni and current off campus accommodation are both the same, 3 instalments just after maintenance loan due.

Safe journey home Downey.

Kitten sorry for the rubbish circumstances.

UrsulaPandress · 23/09/2018 09:30

We paid a deposit when she first secured the accommodation but I am waiting for a bill for the first term.

So where has she ended up living Fantasy.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 23/09/2018 09:32

Fantasy that is really tough. Can she apply to be moved?

Glad most others seem to be settling in.

the third quite a challenging day then. I hope he copes. Have you heard of Brain in Hand. It was originally designed for people with ASD but I think your ds might find it useful. It is expensive but dd got hers through DSA.

TheThirdOfHerName · 23/09/2018 09:37

NoHaudin
Thank you, will have a look at Brain in Hand.

FantasyAndHope · 23/09/2018 09:57

She’s in the accommodation she was reallocated but the people just aren’t her cup of tea.
I think she will spend most of her time at the other house. She’s going to put her name on the waiting list.
She likes her room but the walk from the other house to her house is 15 minutes and involves walking a dark road which I don’t want her doing in London.

UrsulaPandress · 23/09/2018 10:52

I know one girl who spent her first year sleeping on a mates's floor as she didn't like her flat mates.

captainoftheshipwreck · 23/09/2018 12:03

Seems like lots of us are having challenging week - DD awake early today (never up on a Sunday) due to heating not working and house being cold. Mattress is dire and shower doesn't work. Kitchen disgusting. Apart from that all ok!!!! [grin}

marmiteloversunite · 23/09/2018 12:04

Oh Fantasy that is really crap. I'm so sorry. You must be worried sick. Can she report it anonymously to student services?

GnomeDePlume · 23/09/2018 13:56

OYBBK I totally understand your disappointment. I hope that things settle down for you.

Not nice for your DD to be uncomfortable in her own home Fantasy. Fingers crossed for a different room coming up.

Fingers, toes and eyes crossed for your DS getting sorted today TheThird. DD2 managed to get herself lost finding the doctors and also finding a supermarket. Just to add to the joy it was also lashing it down with rain.

Petalflowers · 23/09/2018 13:59

Downey - have a safe journey home. We laid on typical British rain for you today! Glad everything has gone well for you all.

Fantasy - hope the situation improves for your dd soon.

Marmite - helloooo tomyou also. Thinking of you. Make sure you get plenty of rest and listen to your body when recovering. Ie. Don’t overdo it. I prescribe the Colin Firth Pride and Predejuice series as part of your recovery process (nn. I’m not a doctor.)

Third - hope dc manages okay today.

We’re three weeks in now. One thing DS has said that it taken a while to get used to coming in and Getting on with cooking, washing clothes etc. It’s not so much the actual job of doing them, rather than planning to do them (if that makes sense). Ie. At home, i’ve Made the decision of a What to cook, and he justi n came in from school and relaxed, until the food was ready. Now he can’t do that. Ie. The organisational side of things is taking getting used to.

TheThirdOfHerName · 23/09/2018 15:07

He has managed to find the food court to get his brunch, register with the GP and find the supermarket. I think we can count that as a success - at least he won't go hungry, anyway.

TheThirdOfHerName · 23/09/2018 15:09

marmite I hope the post-op pain is manageable. Don't try to do too much, too soon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/09/2018 15:17

I think the thinking ahead and organisational skills are probably the hardest ones, but also the ones that need to be learned on the job.

Well done Downey.

I guess on the plus side, it means that dd is packed already apart from the stuff she needs this week. Worst comes to the worst, I can go up the following Sunday with stuff in a big backpack and push her bike across London. It does all need to come back at Christmas, so packing lightly at least makes things easier for that.

Safely home and finally had a big weep when I read the letter ds wrote to me.

One to tuck away and treasure and look at again and again in my old age.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/09/2018 15:51

awwww :) Nice cup of tea time?

ShanghaiDiva · 23/09/2018 16:48

Downey
Letter sounds lovely!

littledrummergirl · 23/09/2018 17:25

Kitten something that worked really well for us was having the groceries delivered. It saved us carting them through London and eans Ds1 has been left fully stocked up.
Fantasy, I hope your dd settles in soon and manages to sort things out. I think in your situation I would be very tempted to let the university know and ask them to facilitate a move quickly because otherwise my next call would be to the police. I would be furious.
Marmite, I hope your recovery is going well.

FantasyAndHope · 23/09/2018 18:01

She’s rang and said ‘London is everything she dreamed of’
She’s making some great friends from the other house.
Some of the girls she speaks to in her flat but she’s pretty happy

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/09/2018 18:02

Thanks Littledrummergirl :) I don't think she will need too much food as she will be eating in hall lots, but that sounds like a really good tip.

I have a Sheffield question if anyone can help please?

DD2 could do with a bus pass to get from halls to the uni in the city centre. Looking at it online I can see that we can get a bus pass with First Bus or with StageCoach.

Does anyone know if the passes are interchangeable please?

Sorry for such a gormless question, we live in a public transport black hole where buses are slightly less common than intergalactic trade missions!

LoniceraJaponica · 23/09/2018 19:02

This website explains it

GnomeDePlume · 23/09/2018 19:10

LoniceraJaponica thank you so much

starfleet · 23/09/2018 21:00

Fantasy -glad she is
loving London regardless of the accommodation cock up! My sister left to go to university in London and stayed for over 20 years Wink.

DS will get the first bill for his accommodation on or around 10th October. I have arranged to pay in 3 installments.

He had done some washing, a food shop and set up a football team, joined a league and also managed to get a local bar to sponsor their kit which he has designed a logo for. I think he is settling in just fine.
