A safe space for worrying.

Haven’t posted in a while but
DD has her placed confirmed for Vet Med!!!

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 16/08/2018 08:48

Great news everyone! StarStarStar

LoniceraJaponica · 16/08/2018 09:15

Congratulations to everyone. DD smashed it! Sadly, her boyfriend didn't, and it has taken the edge off the day for her.

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/08/2018 09:42

Well done everyone.
DD has now got her results. Almost exactly what she was expecting, but not as good as school predicted. She has now stopped worrying.

Nettleskeins · 16/08/2018 10:07

lonicera my friend's dd missed her Oxbridge offer by a grade. They suggested she retook and held the place for her. She decided against it, because she couldn't face retaking the subject (not main subject) and had done her absolute best in it first time (let down by coursework grade) She is happy somewhere else, but if your dd's boyfriend is reconsidering his options, people do take Oxbridge twice, or retake one A level, and get in. Especially if your dd is taking a Gap Year, he might like having a year to re-calibrate his plans. Especially for History, I suspect it is one of those subjects that very serious historians improve on every year, and their interview skills get better too! There is also an Oxbridge college that takes over 21's called Manchester Harris.
well done your dd!! So many options now Smile

Ds1 got 2 C's (he already has the D* in the third subject at Btec) I am absolutely thrilled, as I was expecting him to bomb English, but it turns out he genuinely thought he would get a B in Music. But he far exceeds the grades needed for his course, and he obviously can write essays after all, which is all that I was concerned at. I am so happy for him to go off without the nagging feeling that he is secondrate, always the problem with unconditional offers (he would have got in with 3 Es)

Nettleskeins · 16/08/2018 10:09

I am just so so relieved that his enthusiasm for Shakespeare if for little else has been rewarded! Maybe now he will consent to go to a Tennesse Williams play...Wink

Nettleskeins · 16/08/2018 10:58

Ursula just heard from one of my friend's that her son has just got into same uni as your dd, to do Economics.

UrsulaPandress · 16/08/2018 11:01

That's great.

DD was only 2 marks off an A* in one subject her tutor informed her. If she wasn't so crap ar Research Methods she'd have smashed it.

She is now stressing about accommodation as she saw one last year that was all kinds of grim.

Happiness is so fleet of foot.

OP posts:
Nettleskeins · 16/08/2018 11:28

Did you get a breakdown of marks? We haven't had anything except the bare grades and the total marks, but no individual module marks.

A* wow. "Research Methods" sounds very grand.

I'm not now stressing about anything except dh being a bad mood. He seems to think it is personally insulting that ds is lazy and untidy and pleased with his marks to the extent of crowing about them...he doesn't understand that boys will say how little work they did to gain a mark, and girls will be proud of the work they put in..

Clairetree1 · 16/08/2018 12:57

well done all DC

success here too!

HolyMountain · 16/08/2018 13:03

Ds3 got ABB and has had his place confirmed but isn't going now, he's changed his mind.

Happiness is so fleet of foot., ain't that the truth Hmm.

UrsulaPandress · 16/08/2018 13:35

Her tutor showed her the breakdown - it was for Psychology.

Results seem to have been quite mixed overall. One of her friends won't tell DD what she got, so presumably she did not do as well as she thought she should, and some people have fallen off the radar completely so we presume they are going through Clearing.

Nettleskeins · 16/08/2018 14:27

it is has been an incredibly busy morning, I wish i had sent everyone away someone, as they keep interrupting me.

Looked at module marks, finally extracted as if by pliers from the exams officer who is not to be found except through tortuous phone calls via main switchboard, and mostly no-one answering the phone..then a long time trying to work out which mark was which, then decided one of marks was way too low, then sent a copy of exam to the A level teacher to check if I was going mad to question (I mean ridiculously low, 3 marks for one 30 mark question!!!)

Then we get the news that ds has a distinction in his latest music exam, for someone who is mostly horizontal, surrounded by empty sandwich boxes and hasn't sung a note for about 6 weeks, seems v v surreal.

Friends sending me results, who are clearly not very aware of the middle grades that are getting onto excellent courses, end of the world scenarios about their dcs missing grades.

All results should be issued with a health warning I reckon. This is not your real grade. Your parents don't really know much. Your teachers may not be available for comment. And it will all come out in the wash. perhaps next week.

UrsulaPandress · 16/08/2018 16:59

I'm exhausted. Had to fall out with DD as she was wafting around town picking up her free Nando's instead of riding the horse.

Fresher's week starts on 16th September so that is just one month left with the boy. Sob.

OP posts:
Nettleskeins · 16/08/2018 17:12

Lake Placid has been disturbed by news that ds's low mark in one paper was entirely justified. Teacher said his comments were so superficial as to only merit 3 marks out of 30 as he didn't answer the question. Angry[with Richard Strauss]

Knitting I hope you are okay. ds did very badly on the appraising paper as you will have gathered. But he still got a C overall. so I am happy and so is he with that result.

Knittinganewme · 16/08/2018 17:29

Nettles DS also presumably did badly on the appraising paper (didn't get the breakdown) and came out with a B overall. The diploma trumps the A level so he's not that upset.

I was thinking last night that I would be happy to escape with CCC, a far cry from his predictions but it has been a dire year and his attendance went through the floor. It was BCD, the D was law where (as last year in the AS) he knew it all, wrote for pages, thought he'd done brilliantly and yet really didn't. I'm assuming that he's missed the point and not answered what they asked for.

He's had his accommodation offer and we've been doing the admin for that.

Nettleskeins · 16/08/2018 17:42

Knitting that is fantastic that he got a B in the subject he is studying!!! Maybe he didn't do so badly in the appraising after allWink. Ds got a very very high mark in the performance and 36/60 in the composition bit. Thank goodness his performance pulled him up to a C overall. I had a look at the essay online because the exams officer sent it to me and his teacher, and it was so very odd to imagine him writing it in the exam itself. And C in the Language A level, must have been quite difficult to pull it off.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/08/2018 18:02

Flowers knitting, just 'cos.

UrsulaPandress · 16/08/2018 18:12

Can we have a new thread when they start their courses?

With the old timers

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/08/2018 18:55

yes :)

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 16/08/2018 19:16

You'll always get new posters around results day. They won't hang about for long.

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/08/2018 19:28

I agree that the newer posters will just hang around for results day and the immediate aftermath, then they'll drift off again. A bit like I drift off when I'm busy with work and then come back in times of stress.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/08/2018 20:42

We can keep this one gently running so that there's space for us old timers to chat without getting lost.

There's a lot of excitement, anticipation and worry out there. understandably so. Sometimes when the party gets noisy it's ok to retire to the kitchen for a quieter chat.

starfleet · 16/08/2018 21:25

Well done to you all for surviving and to your DC's for getting there in the end.

DS has been dropped off to celebrate with his friends and I am going to hopefully get a full nights undisturbed sleep.

Whilst I remember - Ikea are doing a student event running over this weekend. You can book a slot online and they get a free frying pan - how exciting Grin.

UrsulaPandress · 16/08/2018 21:55

You'll always find me in the kitchen at parties.
