DS's standard comment about any exam now seems to be "not sure, think it was OK but then again I could have done really badly".

He had Geography this afternoon (Edexcel). He prefers Human over Physical so is hoping that he has done enough for a decent grade, but who knows. He said he did waffle a bit.

Gretol - one of DS's friends is re-sitting Yr12 due to illness. It worked out for him - he couldn't catch up with the work he missed when was poorly but he had the opportunity to change his A level options when he did go back. I know it's different for your DD with it being Yr13 again and it probably does feel like the worst thing ever for her but her health is the most important thing right now and a school year in the grand scheme of things isn't the longest time. I hope she is feeling better.

Downey - hope your DS improves quickly. Can't be pleasant for him.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 08/06/2018 18:25

Dd says physics was awful. It is her weakest subject but she was slightly comforted that everyone, even the good physicists, thought it was hard.

Thesearepearls · 08/06/2018 18:35

Lonicera you don't know - it can't have been that bad if she was writing all the time

I'm quietly ROFLing at the thought of me testing DS. His subjects are all double dutch to me. I dutifully asked how physics went today. Apparently the question on radial electric fields was unusually phrased. There was something on magnetic electric fields as well. I nodded unintelligently. The question on nuclear physics was

GnomeDePlume · 08/06/2018 19:23

Thesearepearls same here. I understand not one syllable.

Thankfully DD2 is in charge of managing her exam timetable rather than me. I have been happily thinking DD2 only had one more chemistry paper to go and then to be done with sciences. Just looked at the list with glasses on and brain in skull and realised that she has another physics paper and two chemistry papers still to do.

I wont even be good for dealing with the pub quiz team fixture list!

Nettleskeins · 08/06/2018 19:29

had a fight to get ds1 to sit down and start working for the Frankenstein paper. He is behaving as if he is having "well deserved rest" when the next [Eng] exam is in 4 days.
He has done 2 hours, but he did go into a music revision class for 4 hours earlier as well.
I am really struggling to deal with his anxiety which presents itself as avoidance..and I know I have to challenge it.

I managed to also deal with another "flight" artist, ds2 who left an appalling mass of papers in his wake after the history and eng gsce, forced him to tidy up

MrSlant · 08/06/2018 22:10

Nettles I'm having the same with DS2, now his exams are over he doesn't seem to think the drifts of A4 spread round every room of the house are in any way his problem.

Gnome you sound as up to speed with the exams as I am Grin. Good job one of you knows what's happening, this is probably a good indication that they will do well.

Gretol one of DS1's friends was in the year above and he's finishing school at the same time as him now. His grades look brilliant and he's going off to do exactly what he wants so hopefully in 12 months time you will have a much happier picture. So hard for her right now though.

Downey my DS's look knackered but I'm the one with a constant cold, first ever run of bad headaches and a cold sore the size of the planet under my nose, I'm rubbish and way too empathic to make a decent parent! I've got two tooth abscesses as well, maybe I'm secretly 18 .

Sorry Lobster but you did make me laugh.

Posters with DC's doing physics you are scaring me, I promised DS2 I'd do the A level along with him and finally sit the exam having quit the first time round. Any advice on how to get out of this?

HesMyLobster · 08/06/2018 22:12

Gretol sorry to hear your DD was so unwell. It must suck to feel like she's staying behind while her friends are moving on, I really feel for her. As others have said though, her health is the most important thing, and I love Chocolate's outlook about things happening for a reason, even though it doesn't feel like it at the time. (I'm going to remember that one for results day!)

Sounds like it's been a tough exam day for physics and geography Gin all round. I hope you and DC all manage a bit of R&R (that's not R for revision btw!) this weekend. Even those with suicidal horses! Grin

HesMyLobster · 08/06/2018 22:20

Slant Grin checking in the mirror in case you're 18! The number of grey hairs I have seems to have tripled this past month with GCSEs and A-levels! No chance I'm 18 again!

MsAwesomeDragon · 08/06/2018 22:28

Dd says physics today was "hard, I missed a few out but came back to them at the end and answered them then", so she's relatively happy with it but not quite convinced she's remembered everything right.

We've made it through the week!!! Let's have a break tonight, then back to the grindstone tomorrow.

I don't assist dd with revision. She doesn't want me to, and I'm super busy with work (it's exam season don't you know!). I don't know quite how I would fit in helping dd revise around the revision classes I'm running at school and the lower school exams I'm marking, and the reports I'm writing (who thought it was a good idea to put report deadlines right in the middle of silly season?).

TheThirdOfHerName · 08/06/2018 22:43

Hope everyone has a restful weekend (and the teenagers too!))

Hardwickwhite · 08/06/2018 23:40

DD went out for dinner with friends tonight. She looked very beautiful, very, very cool, and happy. I can’t believe how far she has come in 6months.

HesMyLobster · 09/06/2018 00:29

That's lovely Hardwick, hope she had a wonderful night Smile

lashingsofgingerbeer · 09/06/2018 08:50

So nice to wake up & realise it's the weekend & no exams today! Definitely relaxed yesterday evening with the help of Gin & DD also went out for a meal last night as felt she needed a break.

Lonicera I hope your DD is ok today after Geography yesterday. DD said it was a weirdly worded paper & Diverse Places big markers not great & something about a stamp with a picture of a seal & penguin on?!

And so back to the revision for DD.

Gretol · 09/06/2018 09:04

chocolateworshipper thank you so much for your post it was very kind and much needed. We are going to a couple of open days in the next month or so and I hope that will make her feel a bit better and more positive. We have lowered our expectations as she dropped biology and took up Sports studies instead (she's been ill since Sept last year) but on the plus side she loves it and is predicted an A rather than the E she was probably going to get in biology! She hasn't been able to do many of the practicals but luckily has tons of video already so will be able to put together a good demo video.

She has RS on Monday, not sure if anyone else is doing OCR RS (philosophy and ethics)?

Nettleskeins · 09/06/2018 10:07

Gretol ds also had to drop his expectations and change A level, he did a Sports Btec instead of Business A level. And he has received a Distinction* for it instead of the E he was predicted for Business, so it has proved a real tonic for him, and he worked really hard for it, which was important for his self esteem. Subjects/method of qualification can make all the difference.

Open days in the summer are great fun. Some unis include a city tour (as well as the obvious uni tour) so it really does become a day out, and you learn a lot about the UK as well as about unis!

The children's grandmother has died, but it is all very peaceful here, I think when Dh comes back though it will be hard for him worrying about his Dad (in another country) the children are being so touchingly grownup about it, and earnest, they were clearly mentally preparing for this moment, even if they didn't know that she had died last week, when she died. My mum is very much alive though so it feels quite unreal.

Hardwick a lovely picture in my mind of your daughter setting off, my dd is the same this morning (she went upstairs twice to change her mini skirt to the right colour, and told me her fake tan was beginnign to wear off, very cheerfully - off to revise in the public library, but clearly going to meet friends as well)

doistayordoigo · 09/06/2018 10:11

Nettles Sorry to hear about your MIL but glad things are calm at the moment Flowers

Gretol · 09/06/2018 10:19

nettles I am very sorry for your loss Sad

Well done your ds! Dd is enjoying sport so much she wants to do it at uni. She's a naturally good teacher so maybe she'll end up being a dreaded PE teacher...!

Nettleskeins · 09/06/2018 10:23

Don't worry about me, I'm fine

lashingsofgingerbeer · 09/06/2018 10:25

Nettles so sorry to hear about your MIL Flowers & hope you all have time to grieve properly in this hectic exam period.

Gretol it's really good to hear your DD is planning & looking to the future too & so many DC take gap years & different paths these days & life is always about adapting to new changes & making new friends too.

starfleet · 09/06/2018 10:32

So sorry for your loss Nettles.

No reprieve here - DS has exams Monday and Tuesday so full on revision weekend.

Apparently a girl was caught cheating in her exam yesterday. She was caught with her phone. Seems like there is a fair bit of it going on with people writing things on arms and legs...why would they put themselves at risk of disqualification...it doesn't make sense at all.

Nettleskeins · 09/06/2018 10:39

Full on revision weekend here too I hope for ds1. Ds2 has gone to the park run and dd to the library.

Slightly tearing my hair out as to how to motivate ds1 though. Food? Stick? Open all his windows and fill his room with trumpet voluntaries? I may have settle for doing some hoovering in the distance and clattering and rattling.

LoniceraJaponica · 09/06/2018 10:54

Sorry to hear about your MIL Nettle Flowers
MIL is hanging on here, but is deteriorating quickly. Alzheimers is a bastard.

UrsulaPandress · 09/06/2018 11:27

Sorry to hear about your MIL Nettles.

I woke DD before I went to do the 🐴 But got back just now and she wasn't up! Although she did need the rest. No exam until Tuesday.

GnomeDePlume · 09/06/2018 11:36

I am sorry about your respective MiLs nettle & Lonicera.

DD2 doesn't really have many people to revise with now. She goes to a consortium college but exams are taken at the 'home' school so for some subjects she is only 1 of a couple of people taking a particular paper.

This also makes it difficult to discuss with fellow students afterwards.

Still, onwards, onwards. Chemistry on Tuesday so eyes down for a full house.

MsAwesomeDragon · 09/06/2018 11:59

I'm sorry about your mil nettles. Flowers it will be a tough time for your family. Do you know when the funeral will be? Are you all going to be able to go if it's in a different country and the dcs have exams?

Starfleet cheating doesn't make sense to me at all. I do understand the temptation to want some answers available, but it's such high risk!!
