I did remember it was you Ellen but didn't feel I should name names! Glad its working out OK for him.

On the romance front, my DS has just split up with his girlfriend of 5 years so will see how next year treats him!

Nettleskeins · 07/06/2018 22:54

MrSlant dd re-did some of her Gcse Maths paper (Edexcel not as I thought AQA) in front of me with a pen and paper, also looking up the answers on twitter and seemingly remembering every problem

raspberry, oh that is sad. hope it is the right decision for both of them. you can sometimes meet the right person too early and you need time "off"

pretendingtobechilled · 07/06/2018 23:03

Thanks for the many welcomes!

Have been busy trying discreetly to plug gaps in DD2s knowledge of history of Health and Society for GCSE but as DD2 prefers to do it without me (History was my degree subject, so really hard not to interject) having to do it subtly!

DD1 revises quite without any help but is working hard... Though we had a nice chat about her US History. It is nice when DCs study subjects you are interested in too.

LoniceraJaponica · 07/06/2018 23:03

I'm exhausted from having a full on day at work and then talking through some of the human geography stuff with DD. It is pretty heavy going. Some of the resources the geography department have printed off about Global trading relationships require a degree in English to understand. It is very dry and boring to read, and very wordy. I am beginning to wonder if DD has a very mild form of dyslexia because I had to explain what most of it meant.

I think tomorrow's exam is going to be tough.

pretendingtobechilled · 07/06/2018 23:04

Kind of wish I had DCs who would let me test them with flash cards!

lashingsofgingerbeer · 07/06/2018 23:04

Fantasy big hugs to your DD right now - both of you must be shattered tonight! Really hope things/life pick up for your DD 💐

DD is exhausted & literally fallen into her bed tonight surrounded still by Geography notes. She said her brain is numb now thanks to Biology exam & coming straight home to revise again poor thing. She also sent me a goodnight text apologising for her meltdowns & thanking me for going over her revision cards with her....not going to pretend, after a stressful few months, my heart melted right there! Gosh this is an emotional time isn't it!

lashingsofgingerbeer · 07/06/2018 23:16

Lonicera good luck to your DD too tomorrow. There's so much stuff to learn isn't there & then the case studies on top! I have a feeling it's going to be a tough paper too 😬🌎

LoniceraJaponica · 07/06/2018 23:31

Thank you lashings and good luck to your DD for geography and everyone else's DC for their exams tomorrow.

After tomorrow DD will be halfway through her exams, and she can put away her geography stuff forever.

HesMyLobster · 08/06/2018 00:14

Goodness, a busy evening on here! Trying to catch up.
Fantasy sorry your DD wasn't happy with the exam - hopefully it's a case of focusing on the negatives and forgetting all the positives.
Third and Nettles I'm so happy to hear both your DSs found English better than expected, I know they were both dreading it a bit and I was rooting for them!

We have now moved onto War of the Roses, so I'll add that to our quiz team too! (Although we've been going for 3 hours and I don't think I've actually retained any info yet!)

Best of luck to all with exams tomorrow 🍀

UrsulaPandress · 08/06/2018 04:57

Another sleepless night.

Downeyhouse · 08/06/2018 05:10

Sorry to hear that.

Not much sleep here. Ds 2 14 came to see me at 1 to say he had vomited. He has asd and is anxious about school at the moment. Is feeling a bit overwhelmed about homework and tests. Makes me wonder how he will cope with gcses in 2 years let alone a levels!!!

Well ds is up doing early revision for physics today.

Thank goodness it is Friday and there are 2 days off exams.

He has maths on Monday so am expecting a bumpy weekend. Good luck to everyone with Exams today. Onwards and upwards.

UrsulaPandress · 08/06/2018 05:42

I'm hoping dd has a bit of a relax after this morning's exam. She looks exhausted.

Downeyhouse · 08/06/2018 05:45

Sorry to hear that Ursula.

Ds is up and either had an infected gum or abscess! Is in a lot of pain, white as a sheet and looking sorry for himself.

Going to dose him to the max with painkillers and see if the dentist will take him straight after the exam (it is just across the road). Not a fab start to the day. Confused

UrsulaPandress · 08/06/2018 06:09

Oh no. Tooth abscesses are agony. My dentist wouldn't treat me until it had gone down so I had to take antibiotics first. The ones where you can't have alcohol.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/06/2018 07:02

oh no Downey :( oh yikes. Your poor ds. You must be absolutely knackered.

I've learned exactly nothing this exam season other than how to cook a wide variety of breakfasts with my eyes closed. I'll be team chef.

After today they've made it to the weekend. Thank goodness.

GnomeDePlume · 08/06/2018 07:52

DD2 is sciences and maths. She has tried getting me to test her on things but since I dont understand a syllable she would have been better off asking the dog to test her!

I'll be good at getting the drinks for the pub quiz team!

Physics this morning. I think DD2 will be happy when the sciences are done and she can concentrate on maths.

Nettleskeins · 08/06/2018 07:52

Downey ds1 had an infection a bit like you describe, except it wasn't an tooth abscess but strep throat - his whole mouth and throat hurt terribly and he threw up beforehand and had fever. We contracted it in Austria in mountains, in summer. Just in case there is any relevance.

English Language today for the Gscers, I spent a long time discussing persuasive writing yesterday with Ds2, ie persuade me to take you to the Sunderland Away Game. this morning I was seized with panic that my advice was completely wrong and he had been taught a different "formula" by the teacher (as he is in the lowest English set but hopes for a 6)

Ah breakfast. we have a lot of sachets of porridge but the blueberries and other fancies are running out. Ds1 had scrambled egg yesterday. Tbh he said food made him feel sick before exams.

Nettleskeins · 08/06/2018 07:56

Ursula sorry about the sleeplessness. I did sleep a bit better but woke with a start at 6am only to find that the alarm clock had STOPPED!!!! aargh think goodness for my body clock and high state of tension or I wouldn't have woken by 6.45. But 6 is really too early for me.

Lucycat · 08/06/2018 08:04

LoniceraJaponica best of luck to your DD (and mine!) with her geography exam this afternoon. I completely agree about the human stuff, it's very dry in parts.... here speaks a physical geographer 😁 I'm sure that she will be absolutely fine as she's worked so hard.

Good luck to everyone's DD/DS for their exams today- weekend ahead to gather thoughts slightly.

Nettleskeins · 08/06/2018 08:06

pretending we were also plugging the gaps in Health and Medicine last night. I said to ds2, if you knew everything on this sheet (there were 4 of them, very closely printed with facts and figures by the History Dept) you would get an A*. However, you do not need to know ALL of them to get a 6 or a 7.
Lonicera I think the resources are always overwhelming (I admire teachers for compiling them though), and sometimes a bit counterproductive in forming a good response.
Lashings how sweet of your dd. I've had meltdowns and hugs from mine too.

HesMyLobster · 08/06/2018 08:14

Sorry to hear about sleepless nights and poorlyness.
We had a bit of night time drama in that DD woke me at 1:30 to say there was a spider in her room and she needed my help to catch it or she wouldn't be able to sleep.
I suggested she sleep in the spare room, even offered my bed but that wasn't a solution apparently.
I was surprised - DD1 isn't usually the hysterical type about such things. When I saw the bloody thing though my first thought was to just burn the house down! Shock
A huge, fat, ugly, evil looking thing, and it has got itself into a nook in the ceiling, making it impossible to catch.
So I had to prod it a bit (with a kitchen roll tube) to try to get it to move, but the flipping thing fell from the ceiling and we spent the next hour hunting and chasing it around the room!
Thank goodness DD doesn't have an exam today. She's going in for maths revision this morning though , and I have no idea how I'll get through work!

Good luck to the Physicists and Geographers! 🍀

lashingsofgingerbeer · 08/06/2018 08:44

Thanks Lonicera & Lobster. Oh no Downey your poor DS - just what you don't need right now! Remember when D1 developed a huge abscess the night before Yr6 SAT tests - think stress plays it's part!

Lobster that would be us too with the spider scenario - we hate them & this muggy weather brings them out from their lurking places 😲

Good luck everyone with exams today too. Dreading weekend & Monday's Drama & Biology exams - 4.5 hours - as DD's not enjoyed Drama - like English Lit paper plus portfolio, devising & acting exams - she used to love it - not any more sadly!

Icouldbeknitting · 08/06/2018 08:51

English for us today. I'm no help for the pub team as revision happens out of my sight. I can catch spiders though, DS is ok with reasonable sized ones but the whoppers have always been down to me. Sometimes I have to fake being unconcerned and focus modelling appropriate adult behaviour because we get some absolute monsters in the autumn. DS does not know that when he wasn't about I'd set the dog on the huge ones.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 08/06/2018 10:29

Wow it is obvious that exams are in full flow. I was away yesterday collecting ds from university and come back to piles of posts.

Commiserations to those whose dcs felt yesterday's exams didn't go well. I think it is really hard to tell for sure with essay subjects compared with maths where you can add up marks and get a reasonable idea.

Downey sorry you ds is unwell this morning the last thing you need on an exam morning.

Dd has physics today. She is more than half way through now. Ds came back from university with a cold - he better not give it to her.

On results day - ds had a text from his only choice that morning but refused to read it until he had been into school and got his results. He did get in!

GnomeDePlume · 08/06/2018 10:42

lashings it is a shame that your DD has fallen out of love with Drama. Was it the amount of work or the nature of the work? DD2 took Drama just to GCSE but was very glad to then give it up.
