Y13 Summer term: Finishing Lessons, Starting Exams and leaving Sixth Form

So our dcs are now on the last term of sixth form, finishing off lessons and starting their exams.
How did that happen - doesn't seem that long ago since they started Y12.
This is the thread where we support each other as our dcs revise and start their exams, finish off coursework, leave sixth form and make plans for what to do with the rest of their lives. This may involve going to uni or other alternatives.
Every Y13 parent is welcome to join in whether new to these threads or if you have been with us for a while - the more the merrier.

DS1 went to see a heavy metal band last night. He enjoyed it but is covered in small bruises & minor scratches; the mosh pit was a bit more enthusiastic than he is used to.

He is still waiting for his firm choice university to get back to him about the application process for accommodation (he firmed them over a month ago).

It won't be that long before we start to think about where we host threads post exams. Higher would scoop up some of us, but not all.

I'm here! D'S texted last night to ask me if I thought he was a good boyfriend Hmm apparently he doesn't trust her as he told her to be careful going out drinking with her mates. I did point out that was something her father should be saying and he should have said something along the lines of have fun! Oh the joys of a long distance relationship...

I'm here, I tried to join the last one but got sidetracked.

Dd is very grumpy still, her room is covered in sheets of notes, post its and diagrams. Her floor has been covered in even more, I got shouted at for trying to walk in her room.

I think the next few weeks are going to be interesting times Hmm

I got shouted at for trying to walk in her room...ah, so true, I think this is why ds wants to go to university, just to stop me walking into his room (I always knock and I never ask him to tidy it [wry])

derek definitely he should have said have fun - jealousy is the worst vice in a boyfriend (or girlfriend for that matter) husband or wife, father or mother, or even amongst friends..

It is a relief to know so many parents on this thread are finding things a mite tricky [understatement] I like to think the real growing up is done by them, away from us, and what we are experiencing now is just a form of static electricity generated by this process.

|dh has just confessed he spent the entire 4 years from 16-20 refusing to do any of things his parents suggested, without being particularily rebellious. their ideas of what would interest him or cheer him up were of no interest to him. We were doing our usual thing of trying to suggest to ds that he might sit on the lawn and get some fresh air instead of being holed up in a darkened room, no..not budging. But dh said he was like that at that age, and I know I was (not about fresh air but lots of other things)

she has an abscess appearing in the same place on her eye as last year Hmm

Very worried mum here. I can’t wait to this to be over just as much as her

dd has had uncharacteristic meltdowns too this weekend. Clearly the stress is building up for all of them. I restrained myself from sobbing with her this afternoon. Confused

It's not just the exams, it's the change to come I think. It's a huge huge time of transition in their lives.

What sort of jobs can they get over the summer that don't involve talking to people?

Dd has managed a full week in college, and was up at 6 one morning getting tutoring in Maths from a friend in Malaysia.

We'll just get to the end of A'levels and then see what happens next.

OhYouBad I think the job thing is stressing her out. She needs to get an income over summer because she has a few friends who are bankrolled by the parents, we can't afford to do that (well not the luxurious lifestyles her chums are thinking of).

Then the actually reality of uni is no longer a distant idea, it's about for months away and that's just hitting her. And me, I said to her on Friday, what am I going to do when you're not here? Can I ring you to chat like we do now Hmm

DS found out via message that EPQ raw mark 30/60. He gutted, I'm surprised (thought he'd ticked all boxes and final article good). Based on last years marks that's a D. He wants to withdraw it! Would rather it not be marked if that's what it deserves.
I've told him he should be v proud of what he did, ignore and move on. Gutted for him.

Well DD certainly got outside today. She was rowing a replica Viking ship for the opening of Ikea down in Devon. Very random but she had a ball and got some much needed fresh air.

I stupidly said a few weeks ago that I wouldn't nag about her room until after exams. Well on Friday I couldn't bear it anymore and had to have a small moan. Don't see how they can work in the middle of mayhem. Would drive me mad!

DD is really lucky as her uncle is a small food producer and does a lot of food shows so she has signed up to work with him over the summer apart from the weeks she is away enjoying herself.

It surprised me too. Thought first he'd hear would be results day, but seems they do internal marking. It could change, but doubt it would change enough.

Flatmouse that is tough because I know the EPQ takes up precious time so you want to get a mark but I understand not wanting to put it forward for final marking too. Really difficult.

very frustrating about the EPQ. However even a D has UCAS tariff marks, or even a better result is likely; it might be worth just hoping the grade boundary changes.

Flatmouse how awful.

DD works in a shop at present, but has applied to a fast food chain for the summer. DS1 works there in uni holidays too.

They do have to speak to people though Kitten. DD hates that part
