new thread so we don't get lost. Well done to all our dc whether doing btech (or breach as autocorrect prefers to call it) or a levels. 1/6 of the way through this year. (blimey)

DD got her Uniq result offer today, not expected until tomorrow! She wasn't expecting to be offered anything but has a reserve slot for Summer school, and has been offered a place on a Uniq Conference in April. She is very happy with that.

HesMyLobster · 07/03/2017 20:17

Oh that's good news Raspberry! Will get dd to check her emails!

TheSecondOfHerName · 07/03/2017 20:32

Well done to raspberry DD, that's great!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/03/2017 20:55

that's very good Raspberry. Well done to your dd :)

Well done raspberry wonderful news
Dd is at a law event tomorrow
She's had a tough 2 weeks heavy workload and she was really stressed this weekend plus a couple of boyfriend issues
But she will not go to the doctors, her tiredness is unusual

HesMyLobster · 07/03/2017 22:24

No Uniq summer school place for dd Sad

She still has her fingers crossed that she might get on the Sutton Trust one, but I think it's a long shot.

Results for that one are end of March.

If not she'll be applying for Latin Camp (and saving her wages to pay for it!! Confused)

Did anybody else's dc apply for Uniq?

raspberryrippleicecream · 07/03/2017 23:04

I'm sorry Lobster I had my fingers crossed for you.

Hope she enjoys the subject day next week.though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2017 21:14

oh that's a shame Lobster :(
I have no idea what dd has applied for!

Sorry to hear your news lobster

I hope you don't mind me sharing my good news - DD had a meeting with her tutor today, who said that all 3 teachers are happy with her effort and progress, and that she is doing better on all courses than had been expected.

TheSecondOfHerName · 08/03/2017 22:12

chocolateworshipper that's really encouraging.

HesMyLobster · 09/03/2017 07:14

Ahh that's brilliant news Chocolate!
Well done to your dd.

Thankyou all for the sympathy. It was always a long shot. Dd is very philosophical about it - says that there were obviously just dc that deserved/needed a place more than she did, and she's lucky to be able to consider a plan b.

ExitPursuedByJenniMurray · 09/03/2017 07:42

I've never heard of Uniq so just googled.

Icouldbeknitting · 09/03/2017 15:00

Chocolate that is the best sort of news.

I'd not heard of Uniq, not that it matters as he's away that week anyway.

chocolateworshipper · 09/03/2017 16:31

Thank you all for your lovely comments. It is such a massive relief after the stress of getting her through her GCSEs with her dreadful anxiety problems.

Lobster - your DD has a fabulous attitude - she sounds like a wonderful young lady - you must be very proud of her

Littledrummergirl · 11/03/2017 18:32

Ds1 has applied for Sutton trust summer school as well. We decided he might get a place if he applies but definitely won't if he doesn't. So he thought he would give it a go.
Fingers crossed - he meets most of the criteria.

ShanghaiDiva · 12/03/2017 05:45

Ds went to his first university fair on Friday. Representatives there from universities in UK, US, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Australia etc.
Went to a lecture on what to include in your personal statement which he said was useful. Looks like Manchester is now his preferred option for Accounting and Finance.

ExitPursuedByEgo · 13/03/2017 08:21

Manchester is meant to be fab for students. Pity the uk has a tradition of moving away to Uni unlike other countries.

Dd has finally made her mind up to drop Biology.

And has also made a decision on what to do for her EPQ.

All these decisions must be wearing her out 😀

ShanghaiDiva · 13/03/2017 09:03

Perhaps that will change as it becomes more expensive for students to study at university - cheaper to study in home town and stay with parents.

mummytime · 13/03/2017 09:28

I am massively in favour of moving away to Uni - and am sad that the "crap" halls of residence which were cheap are being phased out making it harder. Its a nice safe time to leave home in a pretty supported environment and to get involved in lots of extra curricula activities.
We off to a UCAS fair on Wednesday. DD isn't sure she wants to go to Uni, I'm biting my tongue - its probably nerves.

Icouldbeknitting · 13/03/2017 09:39

I am a Manchester graduate, it was a great place to be a student. The lack of hills made cycling an attractive option and gave us so much freedom.

Did I say that we have exam dates? The last report DS brought home was particularly underwhelming but he thinks he's doing really well. That low mark was just because I ran out of time, that one was a test that everyone did badly on, that one was some other reason. It feels like GCSEs all over again.

I have been dealt a massive sense of perspective with the news that a family friend with a relative the same age as my son has found that he won't be sitting A levels next year because he's not expected to live that long. Whatever challenges you face at that age are not usually as bad as they appear. Failed the driving test? Take it again. Poor subject choices? Start over. A levels not right for you? Start over. Don't know what to do next? Take a gap year. It's not the end of the world, not in the same way that this is. I keep thinking what I would do if that was me, I suppose I'd deal with it because what other option do you have?

Icouldbeknitting · 13/03/2017 09:46

Sorry to be a downer, it was a big shock and I still can't really believe it.

DH stopped at home for uni and I went away. One local uni doesn't do the course DS wants, the other doesn't do it in the format he wants so DS will definitely have his bags packed (assuming the recent report isn't an accurate representation of his performance, based on that he wouldn't have a lot of choices).

TheSecondOfHerName · 13/03/2017 10:39

Icouldbeknitting how heartbreaking. It does put worries about exams and UCAS into perspective.

TheDrsDocMartens · 13/03/2017 17:03

I commute to uni, wouldn't recommend it , I miss loads of events and I'm not even young enough to appreciate them.

knitting perspective but so sad.

raspberryrippleicecream · 13/03/2017 19:43

knitting I'm so sorry

Our local uni doesn't offer any courses that would suit DD, nor the Physics that my older DS is studying. It's a non argument for us.

HesMyLobster · 13/03/2017 20:33

Knitting what devastating news, I'm so sorry.

It certainly puts things into perspective.

Dd has been to look at our 2 most local unis, but she's excited at the idea of moving away.
I can see it from both sides though.
