What jobs suit Army Officers wives????

Wifey1 · 23/03/2011 23:29

A simple question here:

What jobs can Army Officers wives successfully hold down despite all the joyous compromises which come from marrying an officer???

I keep hearing that teaching is a popular choice, any advances on this

Wasn't my suggestion! It was following on from hf. My point was more that journalist or student seeking advice you'd probably type the same terms into google anyway...

madwomanintheattic · 30/03/2011 21:54

i had another thought as well - final year dissertation for an anthropology student? Grin

if so - ethically you need to be v careful wifey. check out all the current internet research ethics advice (i can dig a really good list of ethics sites out from a box somewhere) and don't be tempted to honey trap. Grin in theory, downloading stuff that exists on the web is fine - but when you start asking questions without gaining informed consent, that's an ethical minefield. and the last thing you want is people contacting your supervisor...

Grin

wifey? we'd love to chait some more if you're genuine! Grin (and if not, fess up, and we still might be helpful. but probably not if you're press tbh.)

hf128219 · 30/03/2011 22:13

Oh I don't know I would love my photo in Tatler's Army WAG's next month. Gone are the days of dying to be in Country Life. Although I was in Scottish Field. Grin

madwomanintheattic · 30/03/2011 22:22

were you wearing green hunters gumboots and pearls?

sadly, we don't get uk media here (except online) so you'll all be keeping a lookout and letting me know if anyone's showing a keen interest in lynne thingy, eh? oh, for a sunday paper...

hf128219 · 30/03/2011 22:25

MW where are you?

No pearls, just a large emerald necklace.

madwomanintheattic · 30/03/2011 22:25

my photo appeared in the aff journal twice in the same issue for completely different things in completely different locations. i felt like armyuberwife. i can feel a namechange coming on...

madwomanintheattic · 30/03/2011 22:26

mind you, one was from the back, and my immediate thought was 'dear god, why did i wear that jacket?' - there's feminism 101 for you...

madwomanintheattic · 30/03/2011 22:28

canada. apparently they do sell them at the airport for a millionaire's ransom, but as it's a five hour round trip i'm not going to bother...

i mean, we do have papers, obv. but not british ones.

hf128219 · 30/03/2011 22:29

Ah, got you.

Wow, that jacket is quite unique

Grin
madwomanintheattic · 30/03/2011 22:29

just a large emerald necklace? - that's a little risque, even for scottish field, surely?

madwomanintheattic · 30/03/2011 22:36
Grin seriously though, i'm quite grateful they weren't both face shots. at least i look like different people and not rentawife, and unless you actually read the blurb, you couldn't tell...

this is our second posting here, for example, and (as i am a compulsive volunteer) i was involved in some fundraising and openings of facilities etc last time, of which there are various photographic records on walls of said facilities. i was of course several years younger and had what appears to be a dodgy crew cut. but people still approach me and say 'is that you on the wall of...'?

and i am the least photogenic person on this earth. but apparently the easiest to rope into a photo call. i could be 'ubiquitouswife' i suppose.

Looking forward to Wifey1's return from the newsdesk bar

fedupwithdeployment · 30/03/2011 22:49

Going back some 15 years when I was in my first job as a Lt RN, I recall a number of (rather dull) "senior officers' wives" (actually all were Mrs Lt Cdr)who insisted on being called Mrs Bloggins and not by their first name. They were ghastly. I vowed never to wear DH's rank, and never have done. god knows what they would think if they saw me know. I suspect that if there had been a prize at Dartmouth for "Who is least likely to become wife of a Captain" I would have been a strong contender!

By the way, I am a lawyer and have chosen not to move round frequently.

fedupwithdeployment · 30/03/2011 22:50

oops - NOW!!

Wifey1 · 30/03/2011 23:35

I don't know whether to be horrified or thrilled that you think I'm a journalist!!!

I promise I am just an inquisitive young person (with an old brain), I googled "careers for army officer's wives" or something and ended up here.

But hey ho, if you all wish to be suspicious that's fine. I don't think a news story could be made from this thread, but maybe an anthropological investigation into the culture of military spouses could become the topic of my dissertation. Wink

Anyway, I am glad some of you shared your stories depite the suspicion over my "agenda" being whipped up. I am just a nosy bugger (but I will consider journalism as a career now, mobile isn't it?)

we've just had a spate of journos lurking round mn for a while, desperate to dash off a quick badly researched sunday filler piece, that then gets published and causes further infiltration of nutters who want a piece of the action. rl consequences can be too difficult in certain contexts.

it gets a little tiresome, and there are some areas of the board where personal security is a bit more desirable than others. not just forces, obv.

you'd be surprised what can be turned into a news story if you google all the media refs to mn, really. there are people getting paid to ask dumb questions on here. or even not ask questions, just do abit of cutting and pasting and bob's your uncle.

sometimes, suspicion is justified. Grin

Ha, I just read the latest posts more carefully this time and particularly Madwomans. Hello fellow Social Scientist!!!!

Don't worry, I am not covertly trying to do participant observation, I am fully aware of ethics and I am investigating an immigrant community in my local area for my dissertation, not military spouse forum discussions.

I was away all day because I actually had one of those rare lectures which students occassionally attend, then I had a meeting about my dissertation followed by another meeting at 5, fajitas with my poorly housemate and now I log on to find all this distrust waiting for me!!!!!!!!

I must warn you all that I will be attending lectures again tomorrow, so please don't decide that I am David Cameron or something in my absence Grin

I think I also may have to depart from this site soon until I actually have a ring on my finger or a bun in the oven, otherwise my housemates will discover my enquiries and rip me to shreds for being such an old lady, and also I feel like a fraud Blush but I am NOT a journalist (yet).

ooo, are you? that sounds interesting. a friend of mine spent some time looking at cultural attitudes to food with recent immigrants (after noticing some evidence of hoarding etc - usually immigrants from countries where food may not be as readily available). fascinating. she works for the home office. sadly she isn't a military spouse though.

david cameron has been on mn already. he's got his own username and everything. we know who he is. Grin

good luck with everything (there is a student board on here too if you want to hang around old gimmers for a bit longer - and your friends might not rip you to shreds if you can hide the fact you're planning your married life already) hope it all works out.

(if it helps - i had a really bad experience doing internet research on a forum, (not that you are doing that!) despite having not actually done anything wrong apart from not out myself completely - i had made a really basic error in the format of my uni e-mail address which i posted for potential participants to contact me, and so everyone thought i was some sort of perv - won't tell you what sort of forum lol, it's probably seen searchable )

madwomanintheattic · 31/03/2011 00:05

seen? still...

hf128219 · 31/03/2011 05:13

It was the reference to 'Sandbags' that concerned me most..

Off to work, catch you later!

madwomanintheattic · 31/03/2011 05:33

i missed that - have i really got to wade through 7 pages?

mind you, as 17yo cadets we were well-acquainted with the phrase 'pull up a sandbag'...

i don't know if i can be bothered to look... american idol is on and i've got a glass of vino. dh cooked dinner...

joeymaynard · 31/03/2011 11:41

OK - I don't know if anyone is still following this thread, but I wanted to ask a quick question of two of the previous posters - vintageteacups and mumof2girls2boys. I'm not an army wife myself, but the rest of my family are, which is why I found myself reading this thread! I was intrigued by the two posters' descriptions of web writing and content writing, as I am looking into doing this kind of thing myself. I am wary of some dodgy agencies that seem to be out there, and wondered if either of you could give me some pointers in the right direction. Many, many apologies for hijacking this thread.

vintageteacups · 31/03/2011 11:53

joeymaynard - this is going to sound as though I'm being really rude but if I told you, then it would be an extra person to share my work (ifywim). I don't know how many people they employ - it could be 5 or it could be 1005.

I applied through an online recruiter to a specific vacancy.

I will look at my company and see if they're openly recruiting - if they are, I will PM you Smile.

vintageteacups · 31/03/2011 12:06

Have PM'd you.
