Food combinations that shouldn't work but do...

I just had marmite and mascarpone on toast. It was delicious! I'm also a fan of a custard cream, split in two, with a slice of corned beef inside.

Probably not to everyone's taste I'd agree, but what unusual combinations of foods do you enjoy?

debka · 07/02/2010 17:11

Are you pregnant cuppateajanice? Cos that's WEIRD!!!
But I do like stilton and strawberry jam...

FiveGoMadInDorset · 07/02/2010 17:13

Sausage and marmalade sandwiches.

KurriKurri · 07/02/2010 17:15

marmite and mascarpone is yummy, cuppatea, as is marmite and lettuce.

My DD bought me some ginger cheese for my b'day, it was really nice.

Alicetheinvisible · 07/02/2010 17:23

Cheesy chips with mince sauce mmmmmm....

Alicetheinvisible · 07/02/2010 17:23

Duh! Mint sauce, not mince

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 07/02/2010 17:24

Fruit cake and cheese

Blue cheese and honey sandwiches

I like the sound of sausage and marmalade sandwiches.

ruddynorah · 07/02/2010 17:26

dh thinks my love of chocolate digestives with cheese is weird.

CuppaTeaJanice · 07/02/2010 17:31

Cheese really does go with anything, doesn't it!

My mum used to make endless marmite and lettuce sandwiches when I was a kid, so the thought makes me want to hurl now.

Should prob add that I bought the mascarpone to go on pizza with coconut and pineapple - is that wierd too?

Not pregnant, no. When I was I ate sherbet fountains all the time - didn't mix them with cheese or sausage though!!!

Oh, and I did have jacket potato with Galaxy melted inside once. Tasted like sweet chestnuts.

I said to DH that i am obviously pg as these things are sounding yummy

Someone on another thread mentioned Nutella and wotsit sandwiches and now i want one! (never had one before)

Carikube · 07/02/2010 17:34

We used to have marmite and cucumber sandwiches when I was little.

Now I absolutely love jam and blue cheese on bread (which sounds even more lovely at the moment as I am pg so having to avoid the blue cheese...I know it will be pretty much the first thing I eat after I've given birth!)

ilovemydogandmrobama · 07/02/2010 17:34

fennel and orange

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 07/02/2010 17:53

how did you discover custard creams and corned beef!!!

CuppaTeaJanice · 08/02/2010 18:12

I was on scout camp, we were all drunk and that was pretty much the only food we had available!!!

marmite and cucumber isn't wierd though, it's a savoury topping with salad, works with all savoury toppings.

I like ham and jam sandwiches, again not that weird though.

Peanut butter and tomato sandwiches or peanut butter and tomato on crackers or ryvita lovely.

wonderingwondering · 08/02/2010 18:33

Jam (or fruitcake) with cheese is just the same combination as cheese with grapes, or dried fruit, which I serve all the time. Or the time-honoured cheese and pineapple. So not such an odd combination, really.

Sausage and marmalade I'm struggling with - a bit like pork and apple sauce?

Trickle · 08/02/2010 18:40

chicken, mango, avacado, chilli and houmous - all together with jacket spud mmmmmmmm

Thought peanut butter and tomatoe was quite normal myself.

I've been told my banana, walnut, chicken, rasin and olive couscous salad is a bit wierd too though so who knows

overmydeadbody · 08/02/2010 18:41

yeah sweet stuff with cheese works well doesn't it?

Ditto meat and sweet stuff, traditional roast meats all have a sweet accompaniment don't they?

I have made sausages and mash with a marmalade and onion grave before which is very nice.

overmydeadbody · 08/02/2010 18:42

How about a bowl of cornflakes with milk and honey and a dollop of mayonaise?

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 08/02/2010 18:50

Peanut butter and banana sandwiches are lovely, as are marmite and cottage cheese (for a low fat version of marmite and mascapone!)

woollyjo · 08/02/2010 18:59

marmite and banana sandwiches

Marmite and clementines on toast

yum

MaryMungo · 08/02/2010 19:08

Very hot chips eaten alternately with chocolate buttons. It's soooo good....

jasper · 08/02/2010 19:16

Roasted cheese with sliced bananas under the melted cheese

SardineJam · 08/02/2010 19:40

CuppaTea
I've been known to enjoy chicken and ice cream, and pizza with chocolate sauce - tastes like cake
