put some potatoes in, they will absorb the salt

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 02/02/2010 11:11

let me google that for you

cheeset · 02/02/2010 11:31

TheDevilWearsPrimark - hey that google thing is really cool! Thank you.
Right, I've put it 3 potatoes slice which I will fish out later. I have also added Basalmic Vinegar. Ive been cooking stews/caserole for bloody years using oxo and adding red wine and they've always come out tasting really tasty.

I deviated today by tossing the meat in flour and sodding salt and pepper before I browning the meat and using these stock pots.

Anyone else had problems with these stock pots?

Apologies for my terrible grammar!

I tried the chicken stock pots and they were disgusting - just like jellied salt! Ridiculous amount of salt in them.
I don't use stock in my casseroles, but put a spoon of marmite in to add flavour and seasoning. It doesn't taste of marmite once it's in, just adds to the meaty flavour (even though Marmite is veggie)so my marmite hating dh isn't offended by it

I'm pissed off now. My neighbour goes in for an op to remove her breast(breast cancer)on Thurs and this is a stew her hubby and boys can tuck into while she's in hospital. It tastes SHIT. 2kg's of meat and time down the drain. I could ring KNORRS neck.

taffetacat · 02/02/2010 11:42

Not really any helpful do's I'm afraid, but don't whatever you do reduce it at all. That makes it more salty. You prob know that already.

Bramshott · 02/02/2010 11:44

Can you extract the meat, and the veg and throw the liquid away and start again? You would lose some flavour, but at least wouldn't have totally wasted the meat. Sounds like a nightmare .

displayuntilbestbefore · 02/02/2010 11:59

oh no
Bramshott's idea is worth a try - can't get any worse, can it!

Might be worth a call to Knorr's customer service line to let them know how it affected your stew!

JohnnyTwoHats · 02/02/2010 12:01

Throw in a peeled potato and simmer for a bit, then throw potato away.

slim22 · 02/02/2010 12:07

yes drain the meat and throw most of the liquid. Keep about 1 cup.

Start over as follows:

Fry 2 onions and 2 garlic cloves in a dutch oven with a little olive oil. Only until soft and clear, not brown.

Add some fresh peeled tomatoes (about 4). simmer gently and add 1 tbsp sugar (neutralises salt and acidity).
Add left over sauce, slowly and check seasoning as you go ( no need to use all)
Dilute with a bit of water. Alternate left over sauce and water until you reach right consistency and seasoning.

Add meat.

Add veggies (potatoes & mushroom) and bay leaf.

Pop in oven and slow cook 1 hour or so.

should come out all nice and tender.

Add some slices of raw potato.

If that doesn't do the trick, add some sugar.

Furball · 02/02/2010 12:17

I've always been to scared of using 'let me google that....' in case I got lynched!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 02/02/2010 12:17

lmgtfy.com/ go here

type in the search terms then copy and paste the link it gives you.

it's fab isn't it?

Hope you manage to rescue your casserole op!

Furball · 02/02/2010 12:19

crikey - couldn't have asked for a more timely thread!

I this very morning - put on my slow cooker with a beef stock pot having alwayss used oxo before.

Have just tasted - and agreed it's vile.

have empties through a sieve and put back in the slow cooker with OXO.

I'll save the other ones and the Chicken for the harvest festival!

OtterInaSkoda · 02/02/2010 12:21

Isn't a Dutch oven when you guff under the duvet? I really don't think you should be farting over your poor neighbour's casserole

Monty100 · 02/02/2010 12:34

Thanks DWP, love it!

Furball, shouldn't you put a warning on it if some other unsuspecting soul is going to get the knorr stock pots?

OP - any luck?

cheeset · 02/02/2010 12:37

didn't work with the text? I'm off now so much to do. By the way, stew is OK after 2 batches of potatoes in and removed, 2 lots of balsmic vinegar and spoonful of sugar. Sounds crap yeah
