Following on from my beans on toast with lettuce thread I really want to know now what meals people are acceptable to serve with lettuce. Have a feeling that it might after all be a cultural thing? In German recipe books you will often find hot dishes with a comment "serve with a green salad". Not done in Britain?

Pizza and salad? Pizza preferably a hot dish (if you don't object to "dish" for pizza).

I serve a green salad with practically everything. Ds doesn't eat it unless it's lamb's lettuce - which is, apparently "nice salad" But I am part foreign and dip bread in my wine and do lots of other odd, non-British things!

there are loads of thing we have with salad, beans on toast is not one!
lasagne
steak
bbq type chicken
pizza

emkana · 08/10/2009 22:27

Okay so what about these:

Lasagne and salad

Spaghetti Bolognese and salad

Jacket potato and salad

potato bake and salad

Steak, chips and salad

yay or nay?

Yes to all of those.

I probably wouldn't serve salad with a cooked breakfast - but apart form that......!

Although, thinking about it, a nice tomato salad......

Poledra · 08/10/2009 22:28

I'd serve lettuce with lots of hot meals - lasagna, risotto, grilled fish and chips (though DCs prefer peas with this ), a mediterranean lamb thing with beans, all sorts. Probably wouldn't serve it with beans on toast though

fruitspooksbatsintheeaves · 08/10/2009 22:29

All of those
I love salad

bibbitybobbityCAT · 08/10/2009 22:30

Personally I wouldn't serve anything with a hot runny sauce (like gravy, or indeed the tomato sauce on beans) with salad.

I also would not serve a snack (such as beans on toast, egg on toast, cheese on toast) with salad.

I'd serve almost anything else with salad, though, if people wanted it.

Hth.

If I gave my children beans on toast I would serve it with salad (lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers) to make me feel more virtuous about it.

bibbitybobbityCAT · 08/10/2009 22:37

Well, emkana, that's obviously where your dd got her idea from .

cookielove · 08/10/2009 22:38

how has no one mentioned prawn cocktail, that is the pefect dish to be served with lettuce

FranklyIDontGiveAMam · 08/10/2009 22:38

Ah, - this thread is more fun than the last one I was one......

Drayford · 08/10/2009 22:39

I come from continental roots (italian mainly, but 2nd generation british) and my DH is swiss.

I and DH grew up having salad after our meals (with very few starchy veg) and continue to do so. Our DC also both eat salad with everything (and have been forced to have done so since a very young age, however, it's generally a green salad (lettuce & leaves & sometimes cucumber with a good creamy home made dressing).

I think it kind of acts like a palate cleanser! I love Cheese on Toast and Salad and Roast Beef & Gravy followed by Salad (particularly with gravy mixed into the salad)

silkcut · 08/10/2009 22:42

And me Frank

kickassangel · 08/10/2009 22:43

if i ran a pub, there would be 'salad garnish' with everything

TrillianSlasher · 08/10/2009 22:45

Nothing saucy where an inappropriate sauce might get on the letteuce.

TeamEdwardTango · 08/10/2009 22:51

at Drayford mixing gravy into salad.
It's just wrong! On so many levels.

muggglewump · 08/10/2009 22:55

Oh no gravy with salad sounds truly disgusting.

I've seen a few recipes with cooked lettuce too which is just all wrong.

Drayford · 08/10/2009 22:59

It's really lovely - honest - you just need to give it a try!

I agree with Benjamin Pig

"Lettuce is too flat"
