Following on from my beans on toast with lettuce thread I really want to know now what meals people are acceptable to serve with lettuce. Have a feeling that it might after all be a cultural thing? In German recipe books you will often find hot dishes with a comment "serve with a green salad". Not done in Britain?

I know this is not AIBU, but Seeker someone here dips bread in their wine . Forget lettuce, this is pitchfork time.

When I was young and living in Germany we always had lettuce with a sweet sauce, made out of sour cream, lemon juice and sugar. Must try that again some time.

My DH's great uncle would put sugar on lettuce. He'd drink his tea with salt.

Mixing gravy with salad is wrong - but that does not mean you do not have salad with stodgy saucy things - you just eat it from a salad plate.

It's nice to have a really fresh zingy salad with stodgy meals - it's refreshing

I once had sausage and chips at a nightclub and they served it with a salad, inc. lettuce. And do you know, it was one of the nicest meals I have ever eaten.

I was pissed though.

There is no meal that cannot be enhansed by the inclusion of lattuce.

Fact.

Cooked lettuce is delicious. Try braising it in chicken stock with fried onion and peas next time you roast a chicken. Mmmm

Lettuce goes with a salad. It is not a salad on it's own.

Salad is a perfectly acceptable accompaniment to any meal.

Lettuce is lovely in any sandwitch, always enhances the whole sandwithc eating experience.

Lettuce lovely in hanburgers and in nachos and in tortillas with hot chilli filling.

lettuce also lovely cooked in stir-fries

I will often have salad with all of the things mentioned above, but not at the same time and maybe not on the same plate. So salad as a starter or after the main dish as a palate cleanser. I do live in Spain though with Spanish DH so may be influenced by this.

If you put the combination together, i.e. a toasted bean and lettuce sandwich (with a dash of HP) you'd be onto a winner.

Seriously, - you non saucy people - what do you think of salad dressing on lettuce then?

We have salad with pretty much everything, all year round, but we also have a Mediterranean background (DH's family is Cypriot) so maybe that's why.

Also, although my family (English) mainly did salad as a summer/BBQ thing, I don't really like cooked veg, so salad has always been my compromise.

Favourite sandwich as a child was lettuce and salad cream. Yum.
