tablespoons - do they exist?

OK, so my DH says that when a recipe calls for a tablespoon, what it really means is a dessert spoon, since NO-ONE has tablespoons. He claims that this is true because we don't have any tablespoons and because he has never seen one in a shop. I think we don't have any because we have never bought any and that he has never seen one in a shop because he has never been into a kitchen equipment shop...

Opinions please!

I have tablespoons - they are bigger than dessert spoons. We also call them serving spoons. If it's causing a problem, why don't you buy one of those sets of measuring spoons?

Your DH is wrong.

A tablespoon equates to 15ml. i.e. 3 teaspoons.

Tablespoon - 15ml

And a dessert spoon is a different measurement - I think it is 10ml

Tablespoon = 15mls
Dessert spoon = 10mls
Teaspoon = 5mls

I have two tablespoons.

I use measuring spoons. Just looking at my assorted cutlery drawer, there are all different sizes of "tablespoons" and "teaspoons". Some are fairly flat and some are deep, so there's no way they hold the same!

I was given american measuring cups too and never saw myself using them, until I realised that it opened up a whole host of recipes off the internet that didn't need translated from cups to oz.

You can buy measuring spoons all over the place and a dessert spoon is smaller than a tablespoon.

Can you get US 'cups' over here? I have a really nice Muffin cookbook that's a pita to use because it's all in American.

My foodprocessor has a cups measurement on it.

I have 2 old fashioned tablespoons, measuring spoons and cups! Got the last 2 in nice sets from Lakeland

You can buy jugs with cup measurements on and bread makers have cup measurements on their measuring cups too.

Actually, I got some silver measuring cups in Sainsbury's that look like little saucepans.

I have three tablespoons ... although only my granny's old one is a 'proper' tablespoon ito being 15 ml

Having checked my measuring jug, following FBG's post, I find it has cups on it. Observation is plainly not one of my finer skills. Ta for that. (in my defence I've only had it counts fingers 12 years... )

Ok, maybe someone else knows where to get one, I am all googled out.

I will guard my good old tbsp with my life now that I know it is irreplacable. Not so keen on the measuring spoon sets.

To answer the question in the thread title, there is no (table)spoon.

I got a set of Nigella measuring spoons (proper spoon shaped and everything) as a wedding present. Has everything from a "pinch" to a tablespoon.

Just noticed she does cups too...
