tablespoons - do they exist?

OK, so my DH says that when a recipe calls for a tablespoon, what it really means is a dessert spoon, since NO-ONE has tablespoons. He claims that this is true because we don't have any tablespoons and because he has never seen one in a shop. I think we don't have any because we have never bought any and that he has never seen one in a shop because he has never been into a kitchen equipment shop...

Opinions please!

I have tablespoons, pudding spoons and teaspoons. And I've calibrated* them so I know which ones give a true measure.

  • I don't do dessert ** I am very anal

I have a little bunch of measuring spoons, from lakelands, which has a tablespoon on it. Doesn't everyone have these in their kitchens? (making wild assumptions about people's kitchen drawers now.) You can't use a desertspoon as it won't be enough.

I use my American cup measure set (they measure by volume in the US) and also an American measuring spoon set. They're very precise for internet recipes.
