I'm relieved to see that this is not (as I had thought from the thread title) someone having what I call a D-moment. D is my dad's wife. we gave her humous once. she had never heard of or tasted it before or, she said, noticed it in Tesco's. (this is not 20 or even 10 years ago - it was about 2 years ago).

oooh no - common mistake to confuse cous cous and bulgar wheat - but a mistake I have never understood as they are very different. one's yellowish and all even, as it were. ones nutty and grainy

lol at D-moment hateoman. My ex-PILs where exactly like that when I served humous once. This was about 8 yrs ago now but they had never tasted it or even seen it before

I like couscous, as long as it has lots and lots and lots of flavour in it (olives chopped, tomatoes chopped, red and green peppers chopped, sundried tomatoes chopped, basil, feta crumbled, red wine vinegar, tiny weeny drop of red wine vinegar)

I think it's actualy perfectly reasonable to reject pasta and like coucscous, but then I am a texture girl and find the two quite different.

Although obviously pasta is great as you can do more with it. Cous-cous carbonara anyone? didn't think so.

Polenta is lovely! but I tend to use it cooked, and hardened, mixed with parmesan, cherry tomatoes and basil. then cut up into cubes and baked. yum.

Semolina is what you get from duram wheat before it is ground into flour.

My DD will only eat spaghetti, no other pasta shapes but likes cous cous and polenta.

I ate it today so did ds2, he's just recently tried it and loves it.

Also thinking of trying quinoa as I hear it's very nutritious. I have some in the cupboard so may get it out in the near future?

Yes quinua is a good substitute, but tabouleh isn't traditionally made with couscous anyway it's made with bulgar (also a wheat product though so still no use to you!)

Can you eat millet? It is also a good substitute.
