Blue jelly. How?

Shall I add blue colouring to yellow jelly or green jelly?

I can't seem to find blue.

I don't want very dark blue ideally.

Hmm - could you maybe find some clear-ish jelly? Seems to me you are going to end up with a fairly muddy colour either way - but if that is the choice, I would opt for green jelly + blue colour.

Well I wondered if pineapple might be a clearish yellow. Can't find clear, but have a couple more supermarkets to check.

I suppose I could just sweeten gellatine. Erm... isn't that was jelly is, roughly?

I guess in principle you should be able to just set blue liquid of your choice with gelatine to get exactly the colour you want. Now I am trying to think of a flavour you could add without adding colour to make it something other than just sugar water.

You could do what stealthsquiggle suggested, but add sugar too so it tastes of something, or hunt down some blue flavoured sweets/sweet powder/drink powder. I'm sure the American brand Kool-Aid (it's powder that you mix with water to make squash) do a blue lemonaid, I've seen it in the big supermarkets sometimes.

oh yes, you could set one of those disgusting blue rasperry flavour drinks - good idea.

have you heard of agar agar it is like a chinese jelly comes in strands and you dissolve it, it is a clear clour and you can add a blue dye then,lot nicer than gelatine not to Sure how to put a link in but had a google of it and there was a few ideas,think you can get it from health food shops as well

What's it for? Does it absolutely have to be blue jelly? Because there are other things you could make blue for parties etc. that might be easier, like blue meringues or blue icing on muffins of biscuits?

or, you could buy those artificial flavourings (little bottles sold with the food colouring) like lemon or orange and add that to blue food colouring and gelatine/sugar/water mix.

I vote you buy one of those 'flavoured water' drinks (which are basically clear squash), colour it the requisite shade of blue, and then set it with gelatine.

It's an under the sea party. I happened to find a perfect cartoon style fishbowl in a market for a few pounds. I want to fill it with clear blue jelly and mango slivers of 'goldfish'.

It will be completely wasted on the three-year-olds, but I'm on a mission .

Is it easy enough to set a liquid with gelatine? Oooh! Bonus, I could use vegetarian gelatine powder!

Mango slivers - very worthy - I have often considered doing the same thing but with jelly sweet fish/sharks - although apparently you have to be careful to put them in at exactly the right moment otherwise they dissolve.

The tricky bit will be that (presumably) you will have to make it in layers in order to set your goldfish into it - so you will have to be very exact about the colouring or colour the whole amount of liquid up front, and then 'jelly' it in batches.

Could you get some edible glitter to scatter through it as well?

Edible glitter?! That's the spirit! I shall look out for some.

I am not completely decided between gummy fish or mango slivers. I thought mango slivers would be quite effective, and easier, and might be less frightening for the mothers of children who don't routinely eat blue things .

Ds (12 months) has just eaten the dark green experiment and has a blueish 5-o-clock shadow.

I agree about mango - the instructions I read for doing it with gummy fish looked tricky even with packet jelly - so even trickier with DIY jelly.

edible glitter - it's even the perfect colour - I am trying to think how you could do plants/shells/mermaids/other sealife.

Hi, I was wondering if you actually managed to make some blue jelly? I want to make some to put in a moat around a castle cake (I have used icing before but fancy a change!).
