Blue jelly. How?

Shall I add blue colouring to yellow jelly or green jelly?

I can't seem to find blue.

I don't want very dark blue ideally.

If anyone is still looking for blue jelly (DD2 is requesting a paddling pool cake for when she turns three), I found the aeroplane jelly from Australia mentioned above here. Good luck!

Fantastic! Thank you once again Mumsnet for saving the day... Blue jelly is also a "MUST" for my eldest daughter's 3rd birthday cake - we're making a paddling pool with Peppa Pig & George in it, and I was desperately trying to source blue jelly for the water. Mission (half) accomplished (still to make & ice cake!!) :o

I've just made perfect blue jelly! :)

I used a sachet of instant orange jelly and dropped a small amount of gel food colouring! You really do only need a tiny dot of colouring - if it's not deep enough.. Add more! :)

Blue Curacao went through my mind too. Feed it to the mummies. Grin

What about using blueberries/blueberry juice and gelatine? I have a recipe from the Bompas & Parr Jelly book if you'd like it.

or Lakeland sell sky blue food colouring for £1.99 link here

Made fantastic blue jelly today for grandaughters frozen party.
1pint sugar free lemonade
1pkt of geletine granular
Couple of drops of blue food colouring
Heat 8tblsp lemonade in the microwave
Stir in the geletine
When dissolved add the food colouring
Yeahhhhhh blue jelly

Any recommendations on how to make blue jelly blocks for a minecraft birthday cake type thing - it'll need to be fairly robust (ie bit like rubber) to stand up. Anyone had a go at this? TIA.

Redpriestandmozart · 07/11/2014 12:08

Wakes for a really robust jelly you could use agar agar powder, I used too much in a recipe once and I'm pretty sure what I ended up with is just what you're after. Google it :)

Because I'm lazy, I'd just buy this: americanfizz.co.uk/american-food-and-groceries/american-desserts-jellies-pudding-mixes/American-Jello-Berry-Blue-85g

You should be able to make it thicker by adding less water.

If anyone is interested in the results of my somewhat obsessive experiments, here's what I found out (so you don't have to do it!)

  • lemon & lime jelly with blue food colouring, does as you expect turn a shade of somewhat muddy green
  • orange jelly with blue food colouring, does indeed turn into a fairly peculiar brown shade, completely un-blue like
  • by making it at double strength (half the liquid) it does turn into a brilliant consistency, just right for cutting into cubes or indeed sculpting, and the kids ate it all after turning it into some temporary form of art.

Then I tried Karen's approach. Gelatine and lemonade (half the liquid again). Colour was great - just right, but think I need to practice a little more on the whole 'working with gelatine' thing as there was still quite a bit which hadn't dissolved and so it wasn't quite as rubber like as I wanted.

Still there's always next time. Experiment over and need to move to actual birthday cake time. I'll be fine, how harsh a judge can a room full of Minecraft obsessed boys be?

Blue jello on Amazon

stealthsquiggle · 20/11/2014 22:50

Definitely buy blue jello online. It's the way to go. Annoyingly our local Tesco only stocks chocolate jello Angry Sad

toddlewaddleflipflop · 29/11/2014 13:37

And this is why I love MN - frozen party here next week too, and I can make blue jelly safe in the knowledge that MNers have tested it out before me. Btw, I've bought disposable champagne flutes from Morrisons today that are conical rather than curved, look a bit like icicles. Hope that helps someone!

DaffodilField · 29/11/2014 14:08

I have bought blue jello powder online from America. Is it for a frozen party perchance?

bas1948 · 21/01/2015 11:29

Blue jelly....... You can buy Aeroplane jelly crystals from Ocado.
