There is a good recipe in my slow cooker book for rice pud - not at home just now, I will look it out. I never make rice pudding in the oven so have no idea if the quantities are the same, sorry.

TsarChasm · 17/03/2009 09:53

I love my slow cooker but I've never roasted a whole chicken or piece of meat in it. I've been a bit scared to in case it went wrong and would be an expensive mistake. I'm very tempted to try now though.

Can I just ask, I'm sure it tastes lovely, ut does the meat (whatever you cook) look appetising?

I'm thinking roasted in the oven it looks browned and with crispy bits. How does a chicken or joint look after being slow cooked?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 17/03/2009 10:53

The lamb shanks were amazing - the meat just fell off the bones and it was delicious.
The great thing about doing beef in the slow cooker is that you can use a cheaper cut like brisket and it will be very tender, but as Furball says, you won't be able to carve it as you would an oven-roasted joint so it doesn't look as impressive.
Chicken tastes great too but you don't get the crispy skin so it looks a bit insipid compared to oven-roasted..

TsarChasm · 17/03/2009 11:37

Ah but still sounds very delish. I shouldn't think you notice anyway once its carved up with some gravy. I'm going to try a chicken I thik.

Now I'm hungry! I love the yummy smells you get wafting through the house when the slow cooker is on.

blossomsmine · 17/03/2009 12:12

Tsar, i just put my chicken on a tray and whopped it in the oven for 20mins to crisp it and make it a little browner. Whilst i was doing that i made the gravy from all the stock

Good point! Thanks Blossom

Here is the rice pudding recipe from my slow cooker recipe book. It is really lovely:
1.5 litres milk
40g butter
150g pudding rice
150g sugar

Just combine them and put in slow cooker. I put it on low on Sat night and then turn it off in the morning. If it is to go with a Sunday roast I usually tip it into a dish a pop it in the oven once the roast comes out and it browns a bit on top while we are having the main course. This makes enough for us and lunch guests but leftovers are always good. DH and DD add strawberry jam to theirs, and I like cinnamon. Yummy!

I'm intrigued about the whole chicken. Must give it a try ?

stealthsquiggle · 17/03/2009 14:12

That's the same one soundbites - you beat me to it - except I have found that to be too much butter so I use a lot less (in fact I just butter the dish and don't put any in)

soundbites · 17/03/2009 14:51

Sorry, Stealthsquiggle! You must have the Morphy Richards one too ? I don't think I've ever buttered the dish so maybe the butter thing works out that way!

ChasingSquirrels · 17/03/2009 20:50

I never put the whole chicken on the table, carve it and either put meat directly on the plates or on a serving plate. So the fact it isn't roasted has never occured to me.

blossomsmine · 17/03/2009 22:58

Thanks very much for the rice pudding recipe soundbites will save that for sunday!

I am sure i have seen, somewhere on here, a recipe for pork bbq ribs in the slow cooker...?? Anyone remember the post?? Or does anyone have a nice bbq sauce recipe i can add to the ribs, i have already bought them I did actually buy a bbq marinade but i am thinking that maybe that is cheating!!! Or could i just add something to it???

OK, you had better all be right... chicken now in slow cooker. I tried slow-cooked Spag Bol sauce last night - DC ate it, DH didn't, and I have to say it was not great IMHO.

pellmell · 19/03/2009 13:35

I remove the skin prior to cooking a whole chicken in my slowcooker.
only disadvantage.... removing the chicken from the pot can be quite tricky as it falls apart when you lift it out and splashes everywhere

stealthsquiggle · 19/03/2009 13:39

I am planning on going with blossomsmine's approach and putting it in the oven at the end to crisp up skin. Oven will be hot because it has a timer on to cook potatoes [smug organised fingers crossed emoticon]

blossomsmine · 19/03/2009 15:28

Oh dear, think i might be in the midst of my first slow cooker failure

I decided to put pork ribs in the cooker and just throw on a bbq marinade......there is now loads of liquid and they just look brown rather than the normal dark colour they go if you oven cook or bbq them. I think i will have to wait until they are done and then put them in the oven with some more coating of some description.

Hope the chicken is nice. I am surprised about the spag bol, my lot liked it.

blossomsmine - did you find a bbq sauce recipie ? dp is very partial to bbq sauce.

i now have a lamb casserole cooking for tea in my slow cooker and it smells gorgeous

blossomsmine · 19/03/2009 15:58

worley, no i didn't, that might be my problem. I looked but couldn't find one on line so i just threw in a bottle of bbq marinade i had, maybe it would have been better with a tried and tested slow cooker recipe.
Well they are going to have to eat them anyway!!
Enjoy your casserole

what did the chicken turn out like dizzydixies?

dizzydixies · 26/03/2009 20:35

worley it was fine thanks, I put it into the over to crisp up the skin a bit and it was demolished

izyboy · 26/03/2009 20:42

blossomsmine what veggie things do you do in the slowie?

blossomsmine · 26/03/2009 23:40

izyboy, i have to confess, even though i am a veggie, i haven't tried any vegetarian meals in the slow cooker

I really must though, keep fussing around for the meat eaters and not bothering with me and dd

I heard there was a good recipe on the gmtv website for potatoe and leek soup in the slow cooker, keep meaning to give that a try....

If anyone has any good veggie ideas i would love to hear them
