Slice up a ready made madeira cake. Splurge over some sherry or port. Whack a load of raspberries on top. Pour over a pot of ready made "fresh" custard and leave it all to set for a few hours. top with whipped cream and some toasted almond slivers. Devour.

buy a Bird's mix
Follow instructions
Delicious

Honestly I've made lots and lots of other trifles but it's the best

janeite · 21/12/2008 19:04

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo to Bird's Eye! Mil occasionally makes one of these as a "treat" - it is not!

duckyfuzz · 21/12/2008 19:06

what janeite said - trifle is easy

or use swiss roll instead of madeira cake

or amaretti biscuits soaked in booze - yum!

crispyduck · 21/12/2008 19:07

I sometimes replace the cake for fruit....yummy

Ronaldinhio · 21/12/2008 19:10

swiss roll works well but nothing beats a Bird's trifle for Christmas nostalgia..especially if the custard thickens too much and becomes boomerange in consistency

tassisssss · 21/12/2008 19:15

mine is janeite's but minus the alcohol, if there's not enough juice coming out of the rasps I add a bit of apple juice

KbearingGiftsWeTraverseAfar · 21/12/2008 19:17

I'm going to make a trifle in a minute too! I use trifle sponges soaked in juice from tin of raspberries and rum! Then custard and cream and crushed almonds on top. Then a ladle each and dig in!

janeite · 21/12/2008 19:56

Yes, swiss roll is good too - and often easier to find than madeira cake.At this time of year I often make it the night before and use frozen berries, get it to the custard stage then let it sit overnight and whack the cream on the next day.

moondog · 21/12/2008 19:59

Is anything better than trifle snaffled direct from the fridge??

Overmydeadbody · 21/12/2008 20:01

I was going to suggest searching for moondog's triffle suggestions but I see she has already posted!

Overmydeadbody · 21/12/2008 20:02

I don't like jelly so I'm going to attempt a triffle without any jelly, that's not sacrilage is it?

moondog · 21/12/2008 20:02

I never eat sweet things but Christmas is the one time I give myself a free rein.Have been out to buy my ingredients today.God, I can't wait.

moondog · 21/12/2008 20:03

No,you don't have to have jelly. That firm consistency is good though. I use gelatine with raspberry juice.

asicsgirl · 21/12/2008 20:03

doesn't anyone else have a jelly layer??

ours goes:

sponge cake in the bottom
then booze
then fruit
then jelly
leave it to set
now custard
leave it to set
now whipped cream
sprinkle toasted flaked almonds

asicsgirl · 21/12/2008 20:04

oh sorry x-posts re jelly

Overmydeadbody · 21/12/2008 20:09

I'm going to make one, I've decided!

Cake and booze, fruit (bananas?) custard and cream

moondog · 21/12/2008 20:12

I don't like the idea of bananas. Cut bananas are spooky squidgy grey things, like giant bogies.

Don't.Leave it aht.

asicsgirl · 21/12/2008 20:12

yes i'm going to buy the stuff tomorrow, sod xmas pudding

southeastastra · 21/12/2008 20:13

buy a packet mix then add cocktail fruit like i do.

Overmydeadbody · 21/12/2008 20:14

yes, sod the chriswtmas pud, not my cup of tea.

SEA I would rather bananas than cocktail fruit

janeite · 21/12/2008 20:15

Not bananas - shudder. And not fruit cocktail either.

Oops - somebody stop me please: I have realised that I am clearly a trifle snob.

moondog · 21/12/2008 20:17

Yes, let's put an end to this banana and fruit cocktail malarkey.I would rather engage in furtive mutual masturbation with Nigel Lawson than endure such an abomination.

asicsgirl · 21/12/2008 20:17

step away from the bananas...

i quite like fruit cocktail tho. tinned strawberries too!!

asicsgirl · 21/12/2008 20:18

lol moondog, i read that as nigella lawson, interestin image!!
