God yes, scary women with complicated hair styles welded into place and no eyebrows. They were all prabably popping uppers to stay so thing too.

Make yer own custard and just ensure it is thick. Bit of cornflour as cooking will see to that.

Bugger.

I forgot the jam on the sponge (not lady) fingers.

So...

Sponge fingers.
Jam.
Bit of booze (sherry).
Sliced bananas.
Custard.
Lashings of whipped cream.

Hecate you can use Ambrosia ready made custard. Makes it all the better.

Blimey-only just got back here since posting. Didn't realise there was a trifle appreciation society out there!

Thanks for all the ideas.

LOL at the 'bananas are spooky giant bogies', Moondog.

OMG i have just laughed so hard at badgermonkey's input there with that little gem from Friends............ i haven't seen that episode in a while.

I feel i may be a little drunk on Apricot Bandy.

BRANDY not BANDY

Not traditional, not quick and easy, but divine recipe here. I can't stand swiss roll, so I used this cake sliced and spread with jam for the base and drizzled with sherry.

Whipped cream on the top is nice too .

We always had a big bowl of trifle for Twelth Night (my parents always threw an end of Christmas party). Often eaten for breakfast the next day. Yummy. I'm thinking of doing one this year to take over to the lovely friend who has invited us for our first Christmas away from England. Have to admit I'll be doing it all from scratch, as I really dislike shop custard/cake. In any case swiss roll sponge is really easy to make. Mine will be sponge, raspberries and orange juice (maybe with liquer, but probably not as lots of children will be present), home made custard, and whipped cream. We always had sprinkes and silver balls - I like the way the colours leak .

I'm going to do Buche de Noel too I think, or maybe chocolate marquis. Oh and merangues. Yumm
