May I cheat and choose one per season?

Spring: Dutch Gouda
Summer: Greek Feta (in salad)
Autumn: French Brie (has to be with wine)
Winter: English Extra Mature Cheddar

I love all cheese Even Edam . But if I was pressed, it would have to be UK. I couldn't live without stilton. And I do like a nice bit o wensleydale....

ecoworrier · 30/10/2008 18:26

UK every time. There is just such a variety here. Especially now there are some great continental-style cheeses made in the UK. There is a lovely brie-type cheese made only a few miles from where I live, and that's before we consider all the gorgeous Cheddar, Wensleydale, Stilton... I could go on and on!

My current favourite is Wiltshire Loaf - just gorgeous in a ploughman's or just on it's own!

moshie · 30/10/2008 18:27

The Maryland Farm waxed Cheddar on that link is gorgeous, tasty and creamy. It's the only Cheddar we buy now.

snigger · 30/10/2008 18:36

I'm wobbling now - DH brought home a bag full of cheese from the local cheese shop, and I've just scarfed a large chunk of Pont L'Eveque with some home-made bread .... I think probably still Italy, though .... just...

Liffey · 30/10/2008 18:38

Ireland!

Cathedral which is like a really good cheddar but a bit more rubbery? a tiny bit more like Edam in its texture.

And. Cashel blue. YUM/ smelly!! stand well back.

2nd would be Italy because i love parmesan, but not bothered about mozarrella at all.

CatIsSleepy · 30/10/2008 18:39

hmm
am torn between UK for cheddar and Italy for parmesan
mind you, you can't make cheese on toast with parmesan can you?
UK it is

belgo · 30/10/2008 18:40

Probably Switzerland for fondue cheese with gruyère and emmental.

purpleduck · 30/10/2008 18:42

When we lived in Germany I REALLY missed cheddar, so UK for that...

But then I LOVE mozzarella and parmasan in our Italian food, so Italy

My mum just came from Canada and brought us Cheeze Whiz (not cheese at all, but a spready bright orange cheese-like substance), a child hood comfort food (makes the best grilled cheese )

Isn't it cheese-ist to discriminate against cheeses from other countries?

I'LL HAVE THEM ALL!!!!!

I am tempted to say France for camembert, bleu d'auvergne, cantal, roquefort and various goat's cheeses I cannot remember the name of!

But I couldn't do without Cheddar so it will have to be UK.

Loshad · 30/10/2008 19:37

UK
wensleydale
coverdale
cheddar
welsh goats
wensleydale with fruit in
stilton
etc

SlasherGoober · 30/10/2008 19:39

Philadelphia!

SlasherGoober · 30/10/2008 19:40

Is Dairylea a country? It should be.

Carmenere · 30/10/2008 19:51

thank God Liffey mentioned Irish cheeses. Admittedly you probably don't get a decent selection here but Neals yard in Covent Garden and Selfridges have a really good selection and Waitrose have a few decent ones too. but the truth is that Irish farmhouse cheeses are extraordinarily good, there are loads of top quality ones(about 20) that rival French cheese in quality. There is exceptional milk in Ireland which logically means that, when handled properly it makes fab cheese.
that said I LOVE UK cheeses too. The BEST cheddar is Montgomery's. The BEST stilton is Colston Basset. Mrs Applebys cheshire is amazing. But if I had to choose to have no other cheese again I could happily live with Irish cheese.
Desmond and Gabriel
St Tola
Gubeen
Durrus
Mileens
Cashel Blue
Ect, ect there are tons and they are very high quality. You should try them when you come across them

Hobnobfanatic · 30/10/2008 20:08

Got to be the UK:
Stilton
Cheddar
Wensleydale
Double Gloucester
Red Leicester
Caerphilly
Stinking Bishop
And Dairy Lea of course

bran · 30/10/2008 20:16

Carmenere, I said Ireland before Liffey.

I particularly love the hexagonal cheese, I can't remember what it's called but it's a camenbert-style cheese. It's heaven when it's perfectly ripe.

LuLuBai · 30/10/2008 20:26

Oh my word. I can't believe I just tortured myself by reading this whole thread. Tis cruelty to a pregnant woman facing another Christmas without the merest whiff of a slice of Stilton. Sob. Sob.

(Guess that'll be UK then)

Although a good slice of ripe Brie.... [drool emoticon].

(France?)

Gaaargh - I'm going to have to go for Italy cos pretty much every cheese they produce is pasteurised. How dull, dull, dull. Pass the mozarella please....
