How can I make a CHINESE curry.

As in one that tastes like it is from the Chinese takeaway?
Without (this is the hard bit) going to the shop and buying anything I don't already have in, or is really easy to pick (easy like, have in the local corner shop, as it's miles away to go to the nearest supermarket).

For starters, I do not have curry paste, except thai red curry paste.

bisto do a "chip shop curry" powder, tis like gravy granules and tastes quite like Chinese curry.

slim22 - have you never got a curry from the Chinese takeaway?

VictorianSqualor · 18/07/2008 12:12

But then I have to go and buy the cook book.
I can't right now.
I've been watching that bloody BBC2 'How to cook chinese' and she hasn't done curry

(I know how to do chow mein now though..)

Squonk, it tastes nowt like proper curry!

Have you had curry sauce from the chinese cod?

VS - it does if you put LOADS of the granules in.

Anyway, twas just an idea

taipo · 18/07/2008 12:15

I really like Chinese curry.

Don't know how to make it though.

OverMyDeadBody · 18/07/2008 12:16

do a google search for Ken Hom recipes.

What you want is a chinese stir fry, rather than curry.

Hang on a tick I'll see what I can find...

OverMyDeadBody · 18/07/2008 12:18

oh... you want chip shop curry sauce? That's a differnet matter. I suggest the granules as squonk said.

taipo · 18/07/2008 12:22

Here's a recipe for curry sauce. Looks easy enough.

IHadABetterNameButYouStoleIt · 18/07/2008 12:25

i had this problem when i was making chicken fried rice and my oh wanted curry sauce with it!

i just bought the colmans curry sauce mix and he was happy with that!

slim22 · 18/07/2008 12:34

never ever had one!

stir fry I know.
I live in Asia, here's the basic recipe

fry garlic/ginger in oil, add meat and sear on high heat, add veg, add oyster sauce or black bean sauce, add spring onion and chili if you like and serve.

Takes 5 mn tops

OverMyDeadBody · 18/07/2008 12:37

only in Enlgand do you get Chinese curry sauce

slim22 · 18/07/2008 12:44
Grin
VictorianSqualor · 18/07/2008 13:24

I might just get curry sauce from the Chinese and add it to my meat and veg.

You can buy Chinese curry sauce from my butcher. Might be a bit of a trek, though.

Teuch · 18/07/2008 13:28

they tend to make it from a concentrate anyway, which I think you need to get from a chinese supermarket.

I love chinese curry sauce - I don't think it is actually called 'curry' in chinese but I know plenty of chinese people who make it at home and eat it!

Teuch · 18/07/2008 13:29

and, no...if it is chinese curry sauce you want, a stir fry just aint gonna do it

VictorianSqualor · 18/07/2008 13:33

My thoughts exactly Teuch, it ain't stir fry!

Lol coco, just a little one.

Have a nosy round the back of the takeaway next time you are there...there should be lots of large empty tubs of concentrate!!

Then you could find a supplier and your off!!

yorkiegal · 18/07/2008 16:58
