How do I remove burnt food from a Le Crousette pan?

Daffodils88 · 12/06/2026 10:39

I forgot about a pan of boiling sweet potato I had on the stove & it boiled dry. It’s a Le Crousette pan & the potato is now welded on. Any suggestions on how/if can salvage it?

(nb appreciate this is a first world problem. I do have plenty of other more challenging problems in my life! The pan is only one of two saucepans we currently own & its 3rd hand).

I've done this a couple of times, it's not hard for food to catch on the bottom of a Le Creuset unfortunately.
I loosened the burnt bits by boiling a little water with bicarb sprinkled in and then it scrubbed off easily.

Also, leave the dish to simmer with a cheap dishwasher tablet or bicarbonate of soda and the burnt on food lifts off in 20 m or so.

HoraceCope · 12/06/2026 18:50

leave it on the stove with dishwasher tablet in boiling water

TheKidsHaveAllGrownNow · 12/06/2026 19:05

I use soda crystals. Leave them in overnight with a tiny bit of water as a paste and the dirt lifts off by itself!

I must not upset mumsnetters by spelling le creuset incorrectly. I must not upset mumsnetters by spelling le creuset incorrectly. I must not upset mumsnetters by spelling le creuset incorrectly. I must not upset mumsnetters by spelling le creuset incorrectly.

Apologies to those of you who had no idea what I was talking about.

I have an update AND (you’ll be pleased to hear) photos. Genuinely, thank you everyone for your suggestions. I was surprised by the number of responses & thought it was my mumsnett duty to take photos of each stage so you’re able to see the effectiveness of each treatment. I’ve now lost the will to do anything else for now, so have put it in the dishwasher.
Here’s what it looked like before any treatment.

This is after an overnight soak with 2 dishwasher tablets in boiling water.

And this is after boiling for half an hour with bicarbonate of soda. I then added vinegar for ten minutes. It’s got some washing up liquid in for a bit more of a soak. After this I scrubbed with pink stuff. It’s now in the dishwasher.

For burnt on food I'd soak it with some wash up liquid and water for a few hours, then attempt to scrub. I'd make a paste of bicarbonate and water after that to get the last traces off.

As an aside, I didn't know you could put Le Creuset in the dishwasher.

Love the photos, I really appreciate before and after snaps😁 would like to see the final result too please

OttersOnAPlane · 13/06/2026 17:36

Excellent before and during photos!

Dishwasher tablet or washing powder with boiling water out of the kettle. Hasn’t failed me yet

BlicklingBabe · 13/06/2026 19:12

Fabulous photos OP 🏆.

Interesting posts up thread. I actually binned Le Crumpetset (see what I did there 😅) that had chipped enamel and rust around the top edge. I didn’t try the guarantee route.

I now have a mix between the real thing and the imitations from Sainsbury’s. Can’t tell the difference tbh.

Ilovegermany · 13/06/2026 19:15

I use Marseille soap spray on mine. Leave it 30 minutes with a little hot water and it all comes off.

ImWearingPantaloons · 13/06/2026 19:18

Soak overnight in biological washing powder and water.

Daffodils88 · 13/06/2026 21:42

Not much change, 120 minutes on a hot wash in the dish washer. I’ve now put another 2 dishwasher tablets in there with some boiling water to soak overnight again.

If that doesn’t work, maybe try the simmering with laundry powder, has worked for me

Le Creusette are bastards. Once something sticks on them you're doooomed!

Omg I had a grill pan and burnt it. Couldn't get it the same again afterwards 😂😂.

Boil it off with water and a tablespoon of baking soda. It will just wipe off. This is assuming it's a stainless steel pan.

If it's a non stick Le Creuset pan, you're buggered and just chuck it in the bin. Sadly have just had to do that with my Le Creuset non stick frying pan and was not able to claim on their " lifetime guarantee" as I had used olive oil and had fried food on a hot heat.

What? How are you supposed to know not to do that? I thought pans like these were supposed to be pretty indestructible . I have a John Lewis version that I treat very badly and its still pristine.

Could you maybe try polonium next?

Have you tried bio laundry powder? Simmer for ages. It’s worked for me

@EverybodyLTB Le Creuset offer a lifetime guarantee and will offer you a replacement if your casserole has been used appropriately.

Do contact them, their customer service is fantastic (you'll be required to provide photos)

Ooh thank you, I never realised this! I know it sounds nuts that they’ve gotten rusty, it’s all the little chips around the rim that have exposed the metal. They might tell me I’ve used them badly 😩

@EverybodyLTB their casserole dishes are virtually bombproof.

I had mine for over 20 years when the enamel began thinning through to the cast iron on the bottom and everything started to stick, they replaced it.

As long as the chips were not caused by impact damage from metal utensils or dropping (they are heavy after all), thermal shock (sudden temperature changes), or metal-on-metal clanking during storage, it is possible that they could be due to a factory defect.

You could contact them via e-mail; [email protected], it's worth a try @EverybodyLTB, they are a brilliant company to deal with.

The Pink Stuff Paste. Only things that worked!

Edited

I’ll definitely have a try and report back. I would say I have probably used them more heavily than is ideal. When I buy something expensive that legend said is indestructible, I tend to treat it as such 😬 my massive pot has been used day in and day out for nearly twenty years, the smaller pot only slightly less. I do love them and want to rescue them back from the rusty edges which I’m now constantly having to avoid touching food on.

Whatineed · 14/06/2026 09:38

Cover the burnt area in cheap table salt and washing up liquid and mix into a salty paste and leave overnight again. Then the next day pour in some white vinegar and bicarb until it's foaming. Then scrub it out.

Daffodils88 · 14/06/2026 14:12

Another overnight soak with dishwasher tablet & a scrub with pink stuff. My conclusion is the dishwasher tablet/overnight soak in boiling water worked best. That’s as much as I’m doing now. Thanks for the suggestions.
