How do I remove burnt food from a Le Crousette pan?

Daffodils88 · 12/06/2026 10:39

I forgot about a pan of boiling sweet potato I had on the stove & it boiled dry. It’s a Le Crousette pan & the potato is now welded on. Any suggestions on how/if can salvage it?

(nb appreciate this is a first world problem. I do have plenty of other more challenging problems in my life! The pan is only one of two saucepans we currently own & its 3rd hand).

Cheap tomato ketchup ( doesn't have to be cheap to work but there's no point wasting heinz lol) literally cover the burnt bits with a thick layer and leave for a good few hours. I don't know why it works but it does 🙂

It’s the acid. Cheap ketchup is a high % vinegar. Actual vinegar would work better.

It shouldn’t have got rusty, not sure how get rid but to avoid it oil the pans after washing.

Mine have rust. But they are over 30 years old. And I put them in the dishwasher

Leave it to soak with mix of bicarb of soda and washing up liquid for an hour or two

I would definitely try this first to loosen the burnt on food. After a couple of hours I would then mix a paste of bicarb of soda with a little water to scrub off what's left. This usually works.

Ohthatsabitshit · 12/06/2026 12:27

Just simmer some water in it till the potato sugar lump dissolves. Every so often give it a scrub or scrape with a wooden spoon/washing up brush.

I've never see Le Creuset written the way people say it out loud 😂

I thought it was pronounced ‘le croozay’!

I second the ideas for using a dishwasher tablet

Londonmummy66 · 12/06/2026 12:44

Leave it to soak covered with water and a denture cleaning tablet overnight and then hot water bicarb and washing up liquid should shft anything the tablet hasn't shifted already.

OrlandointheWilderness · 12/06/2026 12:50

Put water in and simmer. Then bicarbonate paste and leave overnight. Scrub.

langnebmydear · 12/06/2026 13:04

Two or theee dishwasher tablets dissolved in boiling water, and a good long soak. Or biological washing powder dissolved in boiling water. One of these will get it off. Le Creuset are very robust.

Has anyone got wonderful ideas for one that has got rust on its edges/rim?

@EverybodyLTB Le Creuset offer a lifetime guarantee and will offer you a replacement if your casserole has been used appropriately.

Do contact them, their customer service is fantastic (you'll be required to provide photos)

Just checking you mean Le Creuset?
If so, fill it with water till the potato is covered and simmer till the potato comes off. You can add baking soda if it's bad.

Of course she bloody is. As you well know.

Whyherewego · 12/06/2026 13:16

Cheap vinegar and bicarb. Bring to boil. Does the trick for me

ArcticBells · 12/06/2026 13:16

I stupidly made fudge in one of mine and never got the burnt bottom clean. A local Le C shop told me would be cheaper to replace than resurface

Dishwasher or laundry tablet or bio powder and soak it off

Yes, me too - works like a dream. I've had mine for 32 years and they still come clean beautifully after I've burnt things horribly.

CocoaTea · 12/06/2026 13:19

Fairy spray and soak spray overnight.

JudyP · 12/06/2026 13:20

dissolve a dishwasher tablet in hot water in the pan and leave it overnight- might take a few repeats and some elbow grease but I burnt rice and this got it off for me

Megsdaughter · 12/06/2026 13:22

Bio washing powder abd water covering the burnt bit simmer gently and you will see it flake off. Dont it lots of times 😄

MindThePause · 12/06/2026 14:15

Vinegar. Either cold overnight, or heated in the pan and left to cool for a couple of hours.

Fine grade wire wool. You need to just do the iron bits though, not the enamel.

Ah I always wash by hand as I mistrust my dishwasher. Mine are 3rd generation, possibly nearer to 40 years old.

Neolara · 12/06/2026 18:24

Boil it off with water and a tablespoon of baking soda. It will just wipe off. This is assuming it's a stainless steel pan.

If it's a non stick Le Creuset pan, you're buggered and just chuck it in the bin. Sadly have just had to do that with my Le Creuset non stick frying pan and was not able to claim on their " lifetime guarantee" as I had used olive oil and had fried food on a hot heat.

I bought mine in 1994 from an outlet shop in the US. Cream - I much preferred that colour to the very limited range available in the UK back then. The only disaster has been the milk pan with the wooden handle and gas hobs. Le Creuset refused to even help replace the handle (obviously I wasnt expecting that for free!). My son has said that if they get too much (they are heavy!) he wants them!! So he can have them and be 2nd generation! My mum's (orange) are still going strong as well so he might get those too! She has more of the roasting dishes which are great for roast potatoes!

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 12/06/2026 18:30

You'll never get it looking like new but it will still be usable!
