Help, Smelly chicken! Should I use it?

Have a lovely big free range chicken which is a day past it's use by date. It has that funny slightly acrid smell that chicken (even in date) sometimes has. Should I use it?

oooooh, I don't know. I'd be wary. I'd certainly use it if it didn't smell.

ScummyMummy · 23/01/2005 17:55

Hmm. Would you use it despite the smell if it was in date?

wheresmyfroggy · 23/01/2005 17:57

i am a big wuss about chicken so probably I wouldnt .

PuffTheMagicDragon · 23/01/2005 17:58

If it smells the same as "in date" chicken, then I'd use it.

NotQuiteCockney · 23/01/2005 17:59

I'd maybe use it, but cook it really really thoroughly. Chicken is nice over-cooked, as long as it's not dry.

CountessDracula · 23/01/2005 18:00

Have washed it and still a bit whiffy. Oh bum I don't know what to do

kalex · 23/01/2005 18:01

Have to say, I don't think I would, Sorry

PuffTheMagicDragon · 23/01/2005 18:02

If you've washed it and its still whiffy, then I'd say no too now!

tillykins · 23/01/2005 18:06

Another no from me! Not worth the risk of food poisoning

CountessDracula · 23/01/2005 18:07

Have decided to bin it What a waste - thanks all

No way dude! Chicken should smell of NOTHING.

Oh I see everyone's already told you that.

Blossomhill · 23/01/2005 20:24

My chicken often smells horrible. I always chuck it when it does but it is usually when it is before it's sell by date. Why????

Lonelymum · 23/01/2005 20:25

Does depend on how well it was kept before you bought it.

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 23/01/2005 20:25

I'm way too late for this but I have used a chick that was past use by date, only by a day too, on the basis that cooking destroys salmonella and it was a £10 organic chicken and I couldn't bear to waste it. I can't see what it would do to you if thoroughly cooked tbh.

Blossomhill · 23/01/2005 20:35

Lonely mum - I either freeze it staright away or keep it in the fridge.

Lonelymum · 23/01/2005 20:37

Yes but what I meant Blossomhill, is that it might go off before its use by date if it wasn't stored properly before you bought it. I recently had some meat that smelt as if it was on the turn and it was within its use by date. I must admit, I cooked it but I made sure it was really well cooked (ie overcooked)

bunny2 · 23/01/2005 20:40

I had this problem - the chicken was on its use by date and smelled awful. I rang Sainsburys to complain and they told me to bin it then credited its value to my loyalty card. If it is on or before the useby date you should def complain.

sweetkitty · 23/01/2005 20:43

food microbiologist here - no I wouldn't use it. Use by dates are there for a reason and are based on scientific knowledge of the growth of bacteria.

Salmonella and Campylobacter will be destoyed by adequate cooking true but the bugs that produce the off smell in meat taint the taste as well so even adequate cooking may not make it taste OK.

JanH · 23/01/2005 20:56

sk, does it make any difference if you remove it from its plastic packaging as soon as you get it home and put it into eg a glass casserole dish? Only it always seems to me that the plastic makes everything kind of sweaty.

Oh, thanks for that sweetkitty, fab to have a definitive answer. I won't do it again then!

happymerryberries · 23/01/2005 21:18

I had salmonella from a chicken once. Grim, very, very, very grim. Ended up crapping blood which would have scared me shitless if I had had any left in me at that point. Err on the side of caution on this one

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 23/01/2005 21:19

That made me larf hmb!
