MaryZ

Surely she should be out killing to cow, if it is going to be genuine...

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 20/05/2008 22:21

the cow even...

tortoise · 20/05/2008 22:22

Lol LGJ!

Oh, how much mince for 1 adult and 4 children?

LyraSilvertongue · 20/05/2008 22:24

Garlic is optional.
I use the medium sized pack of mince from Sainsbury's (don't know how much in weight but costs about £2). Feeds two adults and two children, with a bit left over for another children's meal to go in the freezer. Might need two cans of tomatoes with this much mince, however.

Fry onions, brown mince, fry garlic, tinned toms, (red wine), oregano, bit of ketchup, worcestershire sauce, tabasco,(red wine) put in oven on low for three hours.

Need a rough weight to buy at butchers. Or it will have to come from co-op
Thanks for help.

A pound of mince for four, I would say.

Away with you, you, you, lurker you.

TeenyTinyTorya · 20/05/2008 22:36

I do this -

Put mince in pan with a little bit of water and cook until brown
Add chopped onion, one tin of chopped tomatoes, chopped carrot, peppers and mushroom, squeeze of garlic paste and some mixed herbs.
Cook for half an hour.
Serve on top of spaghetti.

chewlips · 20/05/2008 22:40

I always add grated carrot and grated courgette to my bolognaise. Easy way of getting some of their five a day in them without them realising! It also bulks it out and get more meals out of it so they can then be frozen for another day!

smartiejake · 20/05/2008 23:25

Fry chopped onion, add chopped mushrooms fry for a bit longer.
Add mince fry until browned. add oxo cube, tomato puree, black pepper, paprika. Tin of tomatoes and simmer for about 20 minutes.

mimismummy · 21/05/2008 07:18

I'm a little confused - the home page says this is for shepherds pie recipies (which, incidentally I was after myself so thought I was in luck!!). I do a very simple spag bol - brown mince with oxo cube, add onion, tinned tomatos, bit of red wine, garlic and mixed herbs and simmer for a while.

Chocolateteapot · 21/05/2008 08:01

500g diced beef from butcher. Stick in food processor and roughly chop. Put in frying pan to brown. Meanwhile wash out food processor.

Then stick an onion, a clove of garlic, a couple of carrots, stick of celery, peeled apple, courgette if I have one (or basically any other veg you have that needs using up), in the food processor with a tin of tomatoes, squirt of tomato puree, dash of worcestershire sauce, crumbled beef oxo cube & a bit of basil if I have any. Liquidise until pretty smooth. Meanwhile stir the meat until browned.

I then stick the meat and the whizzed veg into the slow cooker with a little water - maybe 100-200ml, stick it on and forget about it for a few hours ie about 3 or 4 on full. I guess it would work just as well in a casserole dish in a low temperature oven.

chefswife · 21/05/2008 11:29

my goodness ladies!! oxo cubes... does anyone not use that for recipes here. i think once you start putting in vegetables, it starts becoming meat stew, not meat sauce. easy recipe: 1 adult, 4 kids
put pot of water on for pasta, pan with (olive) oil on for sauce
while browning 500g mince, chop half onion and garlic clove then add
when mince is browned, add 2 cans of chopped tomatoes
add oregano, salt and pepper to taste
simmer sauce on above medium heat till pasta is cooked
when water is boiled add a pinch of salt to water before adding pasta.
strain water, add to sauce pan and toss and serve.
put grated parmesan on table for kids.

a great way to add garlic so the kids don't know it's there (because it is sooo good for your heart) is after chopping it, angle blade away from you and almost level to chopping board and mush and chop. this will create a paste that as soon as it hits the pan, it melts.

littleducks · 21/05/2008 11:49

so this thread makes into the home page but titled as shepherds pie?

ChukkyPig · 21/05/2008 20:20

But I can make my own spag bol (v advanced cook dontcha know!). I wanted to know about shepherds pie! My mash always sinks into the mince (sob).

BexieID · 21/05/2008 21:08

Yes, I thought i'd gone mad or you lot were talking about spag bol when the link from the homepage says shepherds pie!

chefswife · 22/05/2008 11:51

don't add milk to the mash.

ChukkyPig · 22/05/2008 16:39

Aha! Thanks chefswife!!! Really should have realised that myself [dimbo emoticon]

tortoise · 22/05/2008 19:41

Well, spag bol was a success. DD2 only left the carrots. DD1 was at a friends for tea but i know she wouldn't of even tasted it! DS's cleaned their plates.
Thanks everyone.
