Answer these questions .................

Can you chop an onion ??

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 20/05/2008 22:02

Can you fry an onion.....??

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 20/05/2008 22:02

Can you brown mince ??

Sidge · 20/05/2008 22:02

Dry fry beef mince in a large saucepan with some chopped onion, chopped pepper and garlic. (You can also add mushrooms if you like them).

When the mince has browned drain off the fat and add a tin of chopped tomatoes and some tomato puree. Stir well, leave to simmer for 20-30 minutes then add mixed herbs 5 minutes before the end. Serve with spaghetti.

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 20/05/2008 22:03

Do you have oxo cubes ??

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 20/05/2008 22:03

You too MaryZ

BlueDragonfly · 20/05/2008 22:06

V V V basic..... brown mince and pour pasta sauce over the top

as you get more adventurous, add chopped up vegatables

I do this..(all in one pan btw)...fry up an onion and a clove of garlic, then brown the mince, add chopped tomatoes,3/4 pint(ish) beef stock, handful of lentils, chopped celery, chopped peppers in all colour, mushrooms, courgette, a squidge of tomato puree and, depending on who its for, some ketchup

Sidge · 20/05/2008 22:06

Sorry

I'll play nicely now.

(Maryz made it even easier than me so does she win?)

tortoise · 20/05/2008 22:08

Thanks. Yes to all those Q's!

Does anywhere run cookery classes? I think i need some! Said friends mum didn't believe my DS1 when he said he'd never had spag bol.

Fry onion.
Brown mince with onion.
Add chopped carrots
Add tinned tomatoes.
Add Oxo cube and oregano.
Simmer
Serve with spaghetti.
Easy peasy.

IAteRosemaryConleyForBreakfast · 20/05/2008 22:09

My way (also crap cook):

Brown mince (butchers' mince, none of that supermarket crap mind), add chopped onion, fry a bit. Add chopped pepper and mushrooms and carrot, whatever really, and some lentils to make it go further. Fry a bit. Add squirt tom puree, big shake of paprika and pinch of chilli powder, some mixed herbs, quarter teaspoon gravy browning, shake lemon juice, shake sugar, stir and then add tin tomatoes and splash hot water, grind in tons of black pepper, boil then simmer for ages. Ideally eat next day for max flavour. With a disgusting amount of parmesan.

I have a cookery book designed for cookery students with all the basics in it. get one of those. Delia's How To Cook series is also good.

tortoise · 20/05/2008 22:13

LyraSilvertongue How long do you simmer it for?

I do actually have the Delia ones.

LyraSilvertongue · 20/05/2008 22:14

The longer the better. 20 mins minimum, two hours if you've got time.

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 20/05/2008 22:14

Harumphhhhhhhhhhhhhh

LyraSilvertongue · 20/05/2008 22:16

Once you've got the hang of the basic recipe you ca experiment with adding different ingredients. It's one of those dishes that everyone makes differently but the basics are the same.

Oh, I forgot the garlic.
If you can't be arsed chopping garlic, get it ready chopped in a jar. Then just add half a teaspoon at the onion-frying stage.

tortoise · 20/05/2008 22:19

Do i need the garlic? Haven't bothered with it in anything before. It stinks! (Bet DD1 will turn her nose up at it!)
