Ocado - any good?

DarthVader · 23/04/2008 18:46

I am fed up with Tesco online as they are not issuing any money off vouchers at the moment so I decided I may as well go Ocado.

Is this a good move? Delivery was £2 for a 1 hour delivery window where Tesco would have been £6 for a 2 hour window plus they have given me a voucher for a free bottle of wine next time so there are some financial advantages....

I am planning on doing an on line ship this week. Refuse 100% to use Tesco and not impressed with Sainsbury's so considering Ocado.

DarthVader · 23/04/2008 18:48

Well let's compare experiences!

Mine arrives on Friday night.

Oh I love Ocado. And they regularly do free stuff/money-offs etc and they bring all the bags all the way into your kitchen and they're never late and they even send you a text reminding you they're going to be there.

I got £20 off the other day because it was the third anniversary of me ordering with them

But if you collect Tesco points, they don't have an equivalent scheme.

Minum · 23/04/2008 18:51

The problem I had with Ocado was stock availablity, which was really poor - I had a long email correspondance with them - basically it is because they have a warehouse delivery system, rather than via stores. The plus of stores delivery is that supermarkets have invested so much in keeping the shelves stocked, there is a very high hit rate for availability for home deliveries.

Also I have other niggles with the Ocado system, such as the cut off point for changing your order, which is much more generous with Tescos, and they don't do a bagless delivery, which Tesco offer.

Ocado do ply you with offers though, they are obviously very keen to build up the business, but I need their processes to improve before I use them again.

WanderingTrolley · 23/04/2008 18:55

I use Ocado.

I think availability varies according to where you live, but round these parts (Laaaandon) it's fine, I rarely have substitutes. Ocado is brill, but not as cheap as Tesco or Asda. Extra money well worth it ime, Tesco and Asda beyond crap here.

DarthVader · 23/04/2008 18:56

Availability problems would piss me off a lot, Minum - and a shame about my Tesco points which I do use a lot. I am thinking of maybe doing a big monthly non-perishable shop with Tesco and then on the other weeks perhaps using Ocado if they impress me!

Yes Minum sometimes the stock can be a hit and miss - today I couldn't get any Johnson's bath foam eg - but usually they come up with an alternative that's ok, I find.

They do take your bags back for recycling (and I love that you get different coloured bags for the fridge and cupboard)

But I too hate Tesco especially the APPALLING quality of their fruit and veg

Eeek · 23/04/2008 18:58

I LOVE Ocado. They are never late and I never have a problem with unavailability or substituted items unless I order last minute. They did go through a bad patch about 6 mo ago but it's been better than ever lately. I have a John Lewis partnership card so I get 1% back on every Ocado order - much better than Tesco points me thinks. the card's worth getting just for that.

Minum · 23/04/2008 19:02

DV - sounds like a good compromise, I'm keeping a close eye on all the delivery services, as they keep improving, I'm sure.

I'm London too, but the Ocado unavailability that really annoyed me was no hot cross buns on Maundy Thursday all the local shops were full of them !! And I'd put the order in with a few days to spare, so they could have got more stock in, as I'm sure I wasnt the only one looking for them.

Minum · 23/04/2008 19:05

squeaver I know they take them back and recyle them (as Tesco do) but I dont want them in the first place, I really hope we send the end of carrier bags over the next few months/years. I've had lovely veg from Tescos, but TBH, I generally buy my veg from my local Waitrose, and use the Tesco delivery for the heavy stuff once a fortnight.

My last Ocado delivery was 5 minutes late, and they refunded the charge, which was very reasonable.

Minum · 23/04/2008 19:07

That should read - see the end -

scottishmummy · 23/04/2008 19:14

yes but pricer than anyone else

ProfessorGrammaticus · 23/04/2008 19:15

Ocado are fab - I got a JL card for the vouchers too. And they are pretty ethical, I think

NotABanana · 23/04/2008 20:34

Finally placed my order and it is coming on Friday 11am-12pm. Have spent about £70 and I thought it would have been more.

cmotdibbler · 23/04/2008 20:39

I love Ocado - they are so polite and nice, and if they are going to be early they ring and check if it will be OK.
Very rare to get any substitutions (and if there is, they tell you and check if you want it). You also often get little free gifts.

hippipotami · 23/04/2008 20:46

I love Ocado. I have been using them for nearly two years now, and have never ever had a stock problem. Only once they did not have the large mozarella I ordered so they substituted two small ones. Sensible substitution so no problem

The delivery drivers are polite, carry bags to the kitchen, always have a smile.

I think Waitrose are more ethical than some othe rsupermarekts, so I don't mind paying a little bit more.

If I do an online shop I invariably spend less than if I went to our local Supermarket (Sainsb) in person, as I don't pick up any impulse buys.

And I love the little Ocado gifts, we have had wine, aprons for me and the dc, chocs at Chrismas and Easter.... lovely

cluttercup · 23/04/2008 20:51

Ocado deliver to the next street to mine but not mine! So frustrating - I must make some friends locally!!!!

Janni · 23/04/2008 21:01

very good, very pricey

DarthVader · 24/04/2008 08:34

Any special favourite items to order - I can still add to mine!

I had a text at 8 this morning to remind me about my delivery at 11-12. I got back from school just before 10 and he was already here! He was lovely when I apologised and said it was his fault as he wasn't busy today and when I said sorry for keeping him waiting he said I hadn't. He brought all my shopping in and explained everything he needed too. I also liked the fact that in the text message it let me know there was nothing missing and no substitutions. Will definitely use them again.

DarthVader · 25/04/2008 12:23

mine is being delivered this evening!

OMG! I have just had my first ready meal in months and it was the best fish pie I have ever tasted. Better than Asda's Extra Special range and M&S! Yum.

GreatAuntieWurly · 25/04/2008 17:37

got a money off code for ocado today if anyone wants to use it
