haven't been for ages - used to do a mean frozen south american steak!

gherkins

wine

try to ignore this week's offers - you'll only end up with a pile of weird crap that you don't really need. kind of defeats the purpose.

bandontherun · 20/04/2008 22:46

The frozen south american steak sounds nice

harpomarx · 20/04/2008 22:48

'twas.

very tender

bandontherun · 20/04/2008 22:49

Was wondering that, never usually buy frozen meat.

i used to love the half price veg weeks when i lived opposite a lidl as they are like real veg, none of the scary 'perfect' kind we normally see now.

dp's auntie told me recently they aren't great healthwise because of pesticides tho - don't know if that's true or not.........

the parmesan is a great bargain there.

harpomarx · 20/04/2008 23:01

aha, you were being sarcastic perhaps?

cadelaide · 20/04/2008 23:02

Second the parmesan....very, very good.

expatinscotland · 20/04/2008 23:02

chopped tom, capers, tagliatelle pasta, olives, gherkins, parmesan cheese, yoghurts, coffee drinks, etc.

expatinscotland · 20/04/2008 23:02

chopped tom, capers, tagliatelle pasta, olives, gherkins, parmesan cheese, yoghurts, coffee drinks, etc.

umberella · 20/04/2008 23:04

ooh, and olive oil

harpomarx · 20/04/2008 23:05

umberella, i thought the oil was weird and bitter but maybe i had an off batch.

herrings, for those of you like that kind of thing...

chocolate

bandontherun · 20/04/2008 23:08

harpomax-no was'nt being sarcastic, generally was'nt sure if it still stayed tender

OP posts:
cadelaide · 20/04/2008 23:08

aaah, yes.

lots of herrings.

Klaw · 20/04/2008 23:08

the Chorizo is brilliant, dd loves it and we make a mean risotto with it and various veg.

harpomarx · 20/04/2008 23:10

very, bandontherun.

one lot i had was a bit flavourless but soft as butter still.

LyraSilvertongue · 20/04/2008 23:10

We just had one open near us and I thought the prices were brilliant first time I went. Sadly the quality isn't up to much.
I do buy their back bacon though. Very tasty and very cheap because they haven't trimmed the fat off.

LyraSilvertongue · 20/04/2008 23:11

Avoid their own brand butter. it was disgusting.

mamabutters · 20/04/2008 23:12

The smoked salmon and trout fillets are really good, and their cottage cheese actually tastes of something.

If you like fish (can you tell I eat bloody loads, suprised I haven't grown gills yet) the seafood pizza are very tasty...lots of smoked fish, mussels, prawns and garlic, yum.

ruddynorah · 20/04/2008 23:14

tins of tuna with things mixed in. we like the nicoise and the mexican ones.

LyraSilvertongue · 20/04/2008 23:15

Yes, my friend got a whole lobster (frozen) in Lidl for a very reasonable price.

LyraSilvertongue · 20/04/2008 23:16

Ruddynorah, we bought those tuna mix things and they were all vile imo. All sour. Yuk.

harpomarx · 20/04/2008 23:23

however

i can't be bloody bothered with lidl anymore and i am on a tight budget

no shopping baskets
great big trolleys
no lights
no staff

everyone gets all excited about these weird dirt cheap 'gourmet' things

it's a dismal shopping experience imo

LyraSilvertongue · 20/04/2008 23:25

I agree harpo, it's such a miserable experience shopping in Lidl that it offsets any savings you might make. So you may as well go to Waitrose and have a lovely time shopping.

harpomarx · 20/04/2008 23:31

don't have a waitrose near me lyra - when i used to live in brighton i did but it was full of people who looked as though they'd never steered a shopping trolley before looking brightly at rows of food on shelves and wondering what they were supposed to do next!

my favourite moment was when a well know local addict lurched into the shop, grabbed a spoon and started helping herself to the salad bar..

have never touched one since.

Seasider · 21/04/2008 12:46

if you shop at bargain-tastic Lidl,
Parmesan,
organic veg,
chocolate raisins,
olive oil,
smoked cheese,
horlicks,
fresh flowers,
you can afford to go wild in the aisles now and then at the fabulous Waitrose!
