Bleh. peas go with GREEN things, pesto, courgette, feta, those pointy spears the name of which mysteriously eludes me.

not red sauce. my red sauce only tolerates a red or yellow pepper, celery, carrot and maybe a mushroom at a pinch. ideally it's just onion, cel, carrot, a slice of smoked bacon and toms (and an armful of olive oil). but peas... NONONONONONOOOOOOO. that is WRONG.

oh i love peas too.
although msappropriate, my boscaiola sauce contains none. i think wild boar (er, bacon in our house), cream, 'shrooms, booze, that sort of thing. foragey in a forest type things. i guess a kitchen garden would also have toms and peas but i wouldn't.

Ive had it like that in two Italian restaurants in England too. I only noticed it after having in Italy several times. Your sauce sounds more like alfredo plus meat.

I would choose a sauce with peas on the menu though because I really like them.

AitchTwoOh · 18/04/2008 10:41

no sorry, i've not typed that clearly. i would put peas in if i was't putting toms in, iykwim? there's a roman dish not unlike a carbonara with boar and peas, it's great. but no toms.

and actually, yur recipe states that the tomatoes must be left chunky because it's not a tomato sauce... [vindicated]

Aitch.. I do not ever eat a pea. It is just yet another instance of the peverseness of children that my most loathed vegetable are dd's passion. My mother made me have 12 each time they were served so that if I ever went out to tea I would eat them to be polite.

foofi · 18/04/2008 10:50

Don't know the recipe of which you speak (and haven't read all the thread!) but I do personally put peas in tomato sauce when feeding my dcs and they never complain!

robinpud · 18/04/2008 10:50

Broccoli and tomatoes is also wrong imo, although spinach is acceptable. Red and green should never really be seen ...

Psychomum5 · 18/04/2008 10:52

but if red and green should never be seen, what about red and green peppers?????

I use them at the same time in dishes!!!!

snowleopard · 18/04/2008 10:53

DP likes peas into tomato sauce - wrong wrong wrong IMO. I hate it if a pea gets in my ketchup too. It has to be isolated pdq.

AitchTwoOh · 18/04/2008 10:53

weird about the spinach. although it does taste better with cream and butter and nutmeg.

foof, do YOU eat it? i'm not interested in the abominations you serve your children. in the advert the silly woman feeds a family of teens and her DH and they all yum and hum about it despite the fact that the omission of peas would improve the recipe immeasurably.

i'm not against veg, feel free to chuck in a roast pepper.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 18/04/2008 10:54

green peppers. another abomination. sour little unripe horrors. i worry about you, psycho.

OP posts:
robinpud · 18/04/2008 10:55

green peppers.. yuk yuk yuk as nigella says. should be banned.

Psychomum5 · 18/04/2008 10:56

maybe I like odd flavours cos I am warped in some way

ChopsTheDuck · 18/04/2008 10:56

You lot are strange! What;s wrong with toms and peas?! Or sweetcorn and tomatoes? I've nto read what the sauce was really made from, but I make sweetcorn curry which is in tomatoes, and muttar paneer, which is peas and cheese in tomato gravy.

toodles · 18/04/2008 10:59

Peas with potatoes in a red sauce is a classic Greek recipe!

hippipotami · 18/04/2008 11:01

Actually, one of my mum's budget recipes when I was little was beef ravioli in a tomato sauce, with peas, in a casserole dish, topped with cheese, in the oven.

Was lovely, and it is the only way I will eat peas (don't like them otherwise)

In fact we saw the ad last night and ds said 'that looks yum', so may try the recipe

(don't shop at Sainsbugs though)

Buda · 18/04/2008 11:06

I had a boyfriend who used to eat tomato ketchup with peas. No matter what the meal was. Just dolloped a load of ketchup on his peas and mixed it all up. And his mother thought I wasn't good enough for HIM! Pah!

I don't mind peas in certain tomatoey dishes actually. Although have to admit it doesn't quite 'go'.

oiFoiF · 18/04/2008 11:14

I thought the same aitch. Then when i thought about it (not too hard) I came to the conclusion they had just added peas to give the photograph colour

AitchTwoOh · 18/04/2008 11:30

yes to the colour thing fio, but i also think it represents the fixation that parents have that vegetables must be crammed into sauce regardless of their effect on the actual taste. a carrot, yes. a roast pepper, yes please. but peas ffs.

i hate that greek pea, pots and tom thing btw, even if the spicing offsets the greenness of the peas...

flossish · 18/04/2008 11:33

I put peas in my bolognaise quite often. IMO it works very nicely and does make the mince go further. I probably also commit all sorts of other cardinal sins though, I'll add carrots, green beans or whatever the hell else is in my fridge!

Give it a try, you might like it!

AitchTwoOh · 18/04/2008 11:41

no. you leave out your peas and put in more carrot and celery as a base. why ruin a perfectly good time honoured recipe?

OP posts:
flossish · 18/04/2008 12:07

But I like having the peas in there! Only bung them in at the end so they are still nice and firm and tasty. Petit pois are nicest, but then aren't they always?

AitchTwoOh · 18/04/2008 12:13

weirdo.

actually i really dislike petit pois, funnily enough.
