Can we talk about Gin?

After G&T spanish inquisition by over zealous barman at restaurant last night I wondered if there were any Gin experts on MN today.

I am interested in:

What is your fave brand, and can you tell the difference?

Do you drink it with anything other than tonic?

Lemon. Lime or something else in with it?

Hello, this thread is a little old now. Take a look at this handy page for a round up of Mumsnetters' favourite gins.

lot sof ice
lots of lime (squeeze some and chunk in)
usually bombay sapphire
full fat tonic

CeilingCat · 16/04/2008 15:46

Plymouth Gin is the best IMO.

Gin Rickey is my fave gin drink:

Gin
Juice of a lime
Dash grenadine
Lots of ice
Top up with soda water

Lizzylou · 16/04/2008 15:46

Ooh Mrs C, that sounds just perfect!

Slubberdegullion · 16/04/2008 15:47

yes I went for bombay saphire plus full fat, but I got the distict feeling that the bar man wanted me to ask for something more interesting (in the world of gin).

Gin is lovely. Fave brand Bombay Sapphire - I like to think I can tell the difference but that may just be poncery! Don't much like Gordons, it tastes a bit weak to me, but will drink it if it's all that's going....Must have lemon and ice and be fairly strong. Oh God, i want one now but we have neither gin nor tonic...do ahve lemon though < thinks if this is enough to justify popping out with dcs to buy gin/tonic>

roquefortlover · 16/04/2008 15:48

Gosh am very slow poster, and this is popular topic!

Slubberdegullion · 16/04/2008 15:48

like a Gin Rickey

Sometimes have it with cranberry juice, sometimes with Ginger beer. Fave brands are Tanqueray and Plymouth.

I am a fan of Gin and I do think that you can tell the difference between types, unlike most vodkas.
Bombay Sapphire is a favourite but I am a Gordon's girl generally. I love it with tonic, lots of ice and a slice of lime and I like to keep little cans of tonic so that it remains fresh as flat tonic is a travesty.

I also like a gimlet which is gin with soda and Roses lime cordial - yum.

what's the weirdy scottish one with the cucumber in? Hendricks?
nice but a bit pimmsy for me

Nagapie · 16/04/2008 15:52

Always have them when I go home ... the quinine in the tonic/bitter lemon is a good mossie repellent...

And to see my mil raise her eyebrows at her DIL's love of spirits... I'm a real cadbury's girl, though...

My mum will only drink Gordon's and reckons she can tell the difference. I suppose at getting on for 70 she should know!

sorkycake · 16/04/2008 15:55

Slubber between your love of tent porn and fondness for gin, I'm liking you more and more

esp since you hid the gorgeous new tent from your Dh.

Slubberdegullion · 16/04/2008 15:56

I have never even heard of Tanqueray. Is it scottish (sounds like a malt whisky)?

The gimlet sounds nice, I love lime cordial.

PortAndLemon · 16/04/2008 15:56

I like Bombay Sapphire and think I can tell the difference between that and e.g. Gordon's, but haven't tried a huge range

Slubberdegullion · 16/04/2008 15:57

sorky I'm more of a beer girl in a tent...because of the tonic coldness/flatness issues.

I concur with previous posters that flat & warm tonic is an insult to the gin.

doggiesayswoof · 16/04/2008 16:01

Plymouth Gin, every time, nice generous measure
Lemon
Ice
Full fat tonic (ice cold little cans a must - though it is not a cost effective or environmentally sound way to go )

God I can't wait till I'm not pg so I can have one.
