Toasted sandwich maker. Do you have one?

I'm tempted to buy one with the removal plates but not sure.
Have you got one and if you have, do you use it or is it one of those things that ends up in the cupboard?
I've got my eye on the Breville one.
What do you think? Shall I bother?

I have one but don't use it anymore as I prefer my panini press. I toast sandwiches in there too. More healthy than a toastie maker as you don't need butter or spread.

My toastier maker doesn't need oil or butter.

My sandwich toaster is 40 this year. My brother bought it for me for my 18th birthday. The paint on the outside is a bit chipped in places now bit otherwise it is fine and I use it on at least a weekly basis.

clare8allthepies · 27/04/2024 21:20

I love our toastie maker! I haven’t tried it yet but I’ve read that if you spread mayo on the outside of the bread it’s lovely. Might have to try it out tomorrow.

Smartiepants79 · 27/04/2024 21:23

Ours gets used pretty much every week by someone.
We live ours

Perfectlystill · 27/04/2024 21:23

Yes but never use it. I bought it when pregnant and having a toasted sandwich obsession.

You will never use it enough for it to be worthwhile.

suki1964 · 28/04/2024 08:35

We have had ours for over 20 years, we go through stages.

However now I have an air fryer, I, prefer them made in that. The texture of the toast is completely different , much more crisp

If you do make a toastie in the air fryer, hold the sandwich together with cocktail sticks otherwise the top slice will blow off

I used to have one but found i didn't really use it. I've now got a panini maker and that gets used loads. I sometimes put normal bread in it as well as paninis. No need for removable plates as they're very smooth and flat so incredibly easy to clean.

Does this fit the standard UK bread slice size?

Relaxd · 29/04/2024 14:58

Yes, lovely to have a toastie with soup. I have the deep fill one as this allows more fillings and stops too much escaping whilst it is toasting.

Yes, crust would be right on the edge but doesn't spoil it. It also has silicon straps holding it together so you can toast a thicker sandwich, or half a panini at a time. Although as it doesn't pinch the edges closed like a plug in toastie maker would, cheese can run out when melted. Brilliant for a basic toastie though.

bluetopazlove · 29/04/2024 18:37

Sorry I haven't bought one , actually I have bought one , it was more hassle than worth . I just make them in a frying pan ,much easier to do and clean .

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 29/04/2024 19:25

@RollnRock if you used brioche buns or bread it doesn't really need butter on the outside!

SallyWD · 29/04/2024 19:47

I have one with flat plates. Use it every day!

80skid · 29/04/2024 19:54

I use my air fryer for toasted sandwiches now. It doesn't squash them but if you butter the outside of the bread it's delicious

ErrolTheDragon · 29/04/2024 20:00

We've got a breville panini press - we used to use it a lot, less so now just because we're not eating sandwich type lunches so much nowadays. Very good, dead easy to clean.

longtompot · 29/04/2024 21:16

We have a basic George Foreman grill bought from Lidl years ago, which I use to make toasties. We also use to to heat up shop bought pasties and cook chicken nuggets on.
I would love one with removable plates as my ED is allergic to dairy and it would be nice to be doubly sure it was clean. I currently use grease proof paper when cooking them, but it still leaves a bit of a residue.
The other thing is I'd love one with really deep pockets so I could do whole egg toasties like I used to on the 80s with my parents Breville toastie machine. One side would have the white but the other the yolk, and I'd add salt and pepper before cooking them. Delicious 😊

Weallnamechangesometimes · 29/04/2024 21:23

You can make pancakes in the toastie Breville too. Yum yum.

AlltheFs · 29/04/2024 21:27

I just do ours in the frying pan. If it’s good enough for Nigella it’s good enough for me. But I’m not a gadget fan, but we don’t have the space.

SleepingisanArt · 29/04/2024 21:29

We have one which my parents bought in the 1970s and which I took to uni in the late 1980s. It has 3 sets of removable plates, one for toasted sandwiches, one for 'grilling' (or paninis) and one for making waffles. We use it about once a month now (more when the children were at home) and sometimes only a toasted sandwich and a cup of tea will do!

Todayisanewday75 · 30/04/2024 07:03

I think the air fryer makes the tastiest toasties, crisp on the outside and properly cooked all the way through. I put butter on the outside and tomato puree and oregano on the inside to make it pizza like, makes the kitchen smell amazing

2024horizons · 30/04/2024 07:27

I did some research and used my Which subscription and bought the Tower one. No its not Breville brand but its ace. Does deep fill etc. Easy to clean as plates come out easily. I have a toasted sandwich once a week WFH and it saves my Costa bill.

2024horizons · 30/04/2024 07:29

Tower does panini, waffle and toastie. I use the panini press for sourdough toasties. Plates come out.

2024horizons · 30/04/2024 07:29

I found an article that compared the toastedness of different brands and Tower came out on top.

I agree.

I got rid of our toastie maker when I discovered that it was easier and better in the air fryer. I just give the outside of the sandwich a fine spray of oil before cooking.

So are we buttering both sides of the bread or just the outside?

Don’t butter the bread, butter the plates .
Put a small amount of butter on the hot bottom plate, then spread it over the toastie maker with a (heat resistant) pastry brush.
You get a nice brown finish on the toastie, but it’s not overloaded with butter.
