Toasted sandwich maker. Do you have one?

I'm tempted to buy one with the removal plates but not sure.
Have you got one and if you have, do you use it or is it one of those things that ends up in the cupboard?
I've got my eye on the Breville one.
What do you think? Shall I bother?

Yes. We go through phases of using it, and then ages where we don't. I do love a toastie though.

soupfiend · 27/04/2024 17:18

I saw Rusty Lee on the telly the other night doing a cheese and tomato toasted sandwich in the Breville from the 80s. My god, it looked delicious.

I make my toasties in our George Goreman thing - nothing nicer than a cheese and tomato toastie with some salad, a handful of nice crisps and a bowl of soup!

Meg87 · 27/04/2024 17:22

I have a Breville one, but just with flat plates, so not moulded to make toasties/waffles etc. This suits us as we can make toasties still - the contents don't seem to spill out the sides! What I use it for the most though is to make toasted panini or ciabbattas, yum! Hence the flat plates.

Mmmmdanone · 27/04/2024 17:22

I bought a microwave one and I love it. Comes apart for washing. Morphy Richrds. It's quite expensive for what it is (about £40) but so easy to throw a toastie together and easy to clean.

CorvusPurpureus · 27/04/2024 17:23

It is what left over curry was made for!

Also good with smoked salmon, avocado, a squeeze of lemon & an egg yolk dropped artistically into the middle.

gonegrl · 27/04/2024 17:24

Yes and we love it. Love making toasties for the toddler too.

Floralnomad · 27/04/2024 17:25

We have the revile one with removable plates and use it very regularly for both toasties and also for small cheese omelette type things at lunch time .

Hopebridge · 27/04/2024 17:28

I got a 3-in-1 recently from Lidl. It's so good. It does panini's, toasties and waffles. I have tried it for all of them and it's a big hit. Would recommend :)

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 27/04/2024 17:28

Yes, we have the removable plates version. It’s used once or twice a week. I sometimes use the panini plates to cook a single burger, or a couple of slices of bacon or some sausages or fish fingers. Less messy than using the oven or a frying pan just for me.

Hardlyworking · 27/04/2024 17:29

+1 for the George Foreman. Does an excellent Toastie!

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 27/04/2024 17:37

Sometimes nothing but a toastie will hit the spot! We've got a Breville with additional waffle plates as well.

LardoBurrows · 27/04/2024 17:40

I make toasted sandwiches in my non-stick frying pan. Make it the same way as you would for the machine, then I use a steak press to weigh it down and just turn it over to do both sides. It means I can make toasties with any shape or thickness of bread. It works really well, it's a doddle to wash or wipe out the frying pan, plus it's one less gadget for the cupboard of doom.

PinkTonic · 27/04/2024 17:43

I make toasties in the air fryer. Obviously no sealed edges but I like them.

bananamum13 · 27/04/2024 17:56

We have the Breville one with removable plates - use it loads, for Omelettes as well as toasties, can't beat it!!

twiddlingthumbs69 · 27/04/2024 17:58

Oooh thanks so much all, exactly what I wanted to hear. I'm going to order one now. Trying to cut down a bit on meat (for finance reasons) so a cheese toastie with a bowl of soup is perfect.

BTW can you use it with clover/flora etc or does it have to be butter?

OP posts:
Hermittrismegistus · 27/04/2024 18:00

Of course you can use spread or even just a little oil.

Butter is tasty though. Butter is life.

Caspianberg · 27/04/2024 18:01

@twiddlingthumbs69 - I don’t use any oil or butter on the outside of our toasties.

MintTwirl · 27/04/2024 18:03

We got one a few months ago after not having one for years and just doing them in the griddle. We’ve been using it once a week or so, great for my teen.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 27/04/2024 18:04

@Hermittrismegistus 😂 it sure is! Good excuse to go back to buying it then 😋

I do not have one because I would triple my bodyweight within a year because I would be eating white bread and cheese toasted sandwiches, with button the outside.

myheadisaterribleplace · 27/04/2024 18:12

I'm now sitting here wishing I had some bread.....I need a cheese, ham and onion toasties so bad now

1stWorldProblems · 27/04/2024 18:15

We have the one with the removable plates - they're great, just make sure they are well separated in the dishwasher as we managed to rub the non-stick coating off one & had to buy a replacement. It replaced the model I was given in 1990s to take to uni!

We also go through phases of using it. The 2x teenage children do love it for lunch. The current favourite is goat's cheese with red onion marmalade. Personally I don't think you can beat the classic strong cheddar.
