Toasted sandwich maker. Do you have one?

I'm tempted to buy one with the removal plates but not sure.
Have you got one and if you have, do you use it or is it one of those things that ends up in the cupboard?
I've got my eye on the Breville one.
What do you think? Shall I bother?

I have the breville one with 3 plates. I find it hard getting bread the right size so one edge always leaks....any suggestions from anyone else who has one?

twiddlingthumbs69 · 27/04/2024 18:26

@WonderingWanda was just thinking the same thing

@WonderingWanda we use Tesco toastie loaf. No leaks.

This thread reminded me to start using mine again! I have a cheap one without removable plates so it was a pain to keep cleaning but a few weeks ago I saw a video where they used parchment paper!! The toastie was perfectly toasted but clean plates. Mind blown. I’m going to try it tomorrow.

Isthiscorrect · 27/04/2024 18:39

I do mine in the air fryer and they are amazing. We did have a sandwich toaster from Lidl and it 'left a lot of room for improvement'.

Love my air fryer sandwiches.

I saw Rusty Lee on the telly the other night doing a cheese and tomato toasted sandwich in the Breville from the 80s. My god, it looked delicious.

I have my 80's Breville and it is still going strong, although things do tend to stick a bit now. It's a twin one, and we also have a single which we inherited last year. Used it today for lunch.

Currently mulling over the idea of a panini press if I can find small one. I've only seen double or triple ones so far and would only need a single. Small kitchen necessitates small gadgets! DH and I have different work patterns so we wouldn't need to do more than one at a time anyway.

TedTheCat · 27/04/2024 18:53

My kids would love on toasties given the chance. You need to get one OP!

PotatoPudding · 27/04/2024 18:54

I have the Breville one. You can get waffle plates for it too, which I really must get round to buying.

We use it more in school holidays for lunches but it does come out occasionally at weekends. Definitely money well spent.

I make my toasties in our George Goreman thing - nothing nicer than a cheese and tomato toastie with some salad, a handful of nice crisps and a bowl of soup!

Me too - far more useful than a pure toastie maker and can use any size/type of bread.

Wiglio · 27/04/2024 18:56

I had an electric one but found it a pain to clean so got rid. I now have a Diablo that is used on the hob which is good for a ceramic one but drips over the gas hob.

TammyJones · 27/04/2024 18:57

Yes - but not used it in years Grin

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 27/04/2024 18:58

I have the microwave one too. It is very good but I keep forgetting I have it!

WeightoftheWorld · 27/04/2024 18:58

We had a cheap Breville one and it didn't last more than a year or two of occasional use and randomly went kaput.

Since then we just make them on our George Foreman grill.

LiterallyOnFire · 27/04/2024 18:58

It comes out in the winter and always if there's snow.

HesterPrincess · 27/04/2024 19:01

We've got one of these: https://www.sageappliances.com/uk/en/products/grills-sandwich-makers/bsg600.html it was a splurge but we'd both got really fed up of soup for lunch at work so we got this. DH usually has a cheese and ham panini, and I use low carb seeded bread (really good toasted) or a low carb deli wrap and have grated cheese, tomato and chilli jam in mine. Never ever get tired of them.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 27/04/2024 19:03

So are we buttering both sides of the bread or just the outside?

OP posts:
TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/04/2024 19:04

I have a very basic one, it cost about £10 and is compact, doesn't have removable plates or anything, and only does one sandwich. I love it and wouldn't be without it because sometimes (on a rainy miserable day like today) you just need a toastie.

I don't feel any need for a rice cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, Quooker or soup maker but I wouldn't be without a toastie maker.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/04/2024 19:05

And I just butter the outside because my toasties always contain cheese.

RollnRock · 27/04/2024 19:09

I'm tempted by this.
It's £35 on eBay, new, maybe less as you can make an offer.
Less than £30 each if you buy 2

Caspianberg · 27/04/2024 19:14

We had a George Forman before but the non stick was old and it had no on/ off just plugged in. So the WMF is the upgrade. Regardless of brand these hot grills are more flexible than a special toastie maker as then you can grill anything and any size bread. Used mine to toast homemade filled burritos tonight, makes them stick together nicely

Georgyporky · 27/04/2024 19:22

I've tried several types, but none was suitable for standard size bread slices..
The microwave one was not suitable as the plates were too stiff for my weak hands to remove.
I now use toaster bags in the Airfryer,

twiddlingthumbs69 · 27/04/2024 19:03

Outside only here - the cheese on the inside is enough for me

caringcarer · 27/04/2024 21:04

I have one but don't use it anymore as I prefer my panini press. I toast sandwiches in there too. More healthy than a toastie maker as you don't need butter or spread.
