I remember when I was younger and my mum first started to be a bit adventurous and cooked spag bol she bought that powdered parmesan in those same pots as you get dried herbs in to go with it, it stunk and tasted foul. It put me off it for years until I made myself try real parmesan when I was 24!

notnowbernard · 11/03/2008 22:18

Ledogy - I remember when spag bol was adventurous, too

And with the powdered parmesan

A few years later we got garlic bread with it

I didn't try a curry until I'd left home!

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 11/03/2008 22:19

Ledodgy

I once smelt that stuff, it smelt like stinky socks.

Ledodgy · 11/03/2008 22:20

It smelt rank.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 11/03/2008 22:20

it is rank pre grated and drops out of sanwiches!

unknownrebelbang · 11/03/2008 22:22

I have been known to buy many so-called convenience foods...but never, ever, grated cheese.

I set the boys on if I need a block grating.

notnowbernard · 11/03/2008 22:23

It was a Saturday night staple

Friday was fish n chips

Sunday a roast (obviously)

Somewhere inbetween a pork chop and a boiled spud would make an appearance. With Bisto gravy.

You can understand where I got my Kohl Rabi tendencies from

chipmonkey · 11/03/2008 22:23

That fake parmesan looks and tastes like vomit.

WendyWeber · 11/03/2008 22:24

Pre-grated cheese is all gooey & rubbery, yuck!

Parmesan is OK because it's drier and it generally comes in a nice sensible tub but pre-grated cheddar (or whatever) is disgusting.

cod, I am at you!!!

LyraSilvertongue · 11/03/2008 22:24

I've just discovered diced frozen onion. It's the best thing since sliced bread, I hate chopping onions. Taste-wise there seems to be little difference.
I also buy Very Lazy Garlic, pre-chopped in a jar.

LyraSilvertongue · 11/03/2008 22:26

DSs call pre-grated parmesan Stinky Cheese. It smells like puke.

WendyWeber · 11/03/2008 22:26

No frozen veg, LGJ???

(Even more )

Not even - peas? Frozen peas are fab, easy to cook in the mocrowave, juicy & full of vit C, yum (and some of my kids eat them frozen out of a bowl as a treat!)

Ledodgy · 11/03/2008 22:27

HahaBernard my mum had a fondness for pork chops and boiled spuds too, or if we were lucky a lamb chop, We had ham and chips on Fridays after swimming, always had a fry up on a Saturday morning, roast every Sunday. She did get a bit more adventurous when I was in junior school as we progressed to bbq spare ribs (bought from butchers) with rice and spag bol.

LyraSilvertongue · 11/03/2008 22:27

Frozen peas are healthier than 'fresh'. DS1 also likes to eat them frozen.

notnowbernard · 11/03/2008 22:28

I remember being given frozen peas to eat

And an oxo cube

And a raw potato chip

What was my Mother thinking of?

LyraSilvertongue · 11/03/2008 22:28

Ribs with rice and spag bol all on the same plate, ledodgy?

LyraSilvertongue · 11/03/2008 22:28

DP's dad gave him raw pork.

WendyWeber · 11/03/2008 22:30

DD2 steals bits of raw spud when I am peeling and chopping.

Are my kids weird?

notnowbernard · 11/03/2008 22:30

Oooh, a fry-up!

Posh

talkingmongoose · 11/03/2008 22:32

I have a teenager for onion and cheese chopping duties.

Ledodgy · 11/03/2008 22:33

Yeah and on the few Saturdays we didn't have fry ups we'd have kippers oh the smell and the bones...

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 11/03/2008 22:33

me too - never chop onions now!

Ledodgy · 11/03/2008 22:34

Haha no lyra although it does read like that!

LyraSilvertongue · 11/03/2008 22:34

DSs like to eat uncooked pasta. Strange children...

notnowbernard · 11/03/2008 22:38

We always had coco pops or chocolate spread on toast for breakfast at weekends, I seem to remember

Syrup sandwiches for tea on a Sunday
