M&S Snacks - Long Haul Flight

DontBeBitterGlitter2023 · 04/10/2023 10:28

Have a long-haul trip to Japan on Friday (via Dubai so 8 hours then 10 hours) and going to go to M&S later to stock up on snacks - any suggestions? I prefer savoury to sweet but I also adore their cookie dough bites... it's more for entertainment purposes and something to look forward to though as I get so BORED travelling (never sit still at home).

Have over 2 hours in Dubai airport and also flying with Emirates who are pretty good with the food/drinks anyway but want to treat myself - I eat really well normally so all calorie count is going out of the window for the next three weeks!

(Also any other suggestions to occupy myself would be most welcome since I can't even sleep on planes...)

Some of the Halloween scare munch stuff, I know you said savoury, but it does have pretzels in Wink

Emirates have huge trays of snacks in economy (and every other class): sweet and savoury. You can get up every half an hour and go graze, no need to bring your own. Plus on each flight you’ll be served 2x meals (min) plus snacks at your seat. Bringing your own food unless you have severe allergies is a bit OTT.

What destination is that to can I ask? I travel several times a year with Emirates and there is nowhere (in economy) that you can go and wander to to get snacks!! Business on the A380, yes, but certainly not in economy on any destination I have gone to. Maybe I'm not travelling to the right places? 😂

I also used to be cabin crew for them (a long time ago in their heyday, they are rubbish now!) and economy NEVER had trays of snacks that you could go and wander and help yourself to. It's always just been a pack of mini savoury biscuits with your drink. Their service now is rubbish, the meals are pathetic and absolutely minimal, one meal and a snack meal on even long haul flights.

I’m a bit boring but I can pass a lot of time on the Chase app (the tv quiz, not bank). I think it’s about a pound in App Store but works in airplane mode

NewtScamandersNiffler · 04/10/2023 16:16

Last long haul flight I packed some of M&Ss chocolate covered marzipan, a sandwich in case the onboard meal was awful and some fruit.

BA were very good at serving soft drinks at regular intervals, but having fruit to snack on (apples and grapes) made the flight better.

I do like their festive munch tins which mix sweet and savoury and will be making my own for Christmas as I wanted more plain pretzels.

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned the pretzel thins yet!

RedToothBrush · 04/10/2023 10:30

Why do you need additional snacks on long haul?

Just cos your bored?

You've got a bad relationship with food going on there.

This is possibly the most MN post ever😀

AgnesX · 04/10/2023 16:29

I've never understood the need for people to eat non stop when they're travelling. The last time I was on a train the couple across me from started eating. It smelled like some breakfast burrito thing and a sausage roll from Greggs before the train left Glasgow. They tore into a sandwich pack, crisps, a litre of pop and had been to the buffet twice for hot chocolate and biscuits before I got off at Oxenholme.

That said they were lucky there was a buffet😁

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 04/10/2023 16:42

M&S sour cream and black pepper rice cakes are very moreish. I’m addicted.

oneweecraw · 04/10/2023 16:51

The salt and vinegar pop
Chip type things are deeeeelicious!!

DontBeBitterGlitter2023 · 04/10/2023 17:35

So....the results are in.... I went with a bag of Halloween Munch Mix, Percy Piglets, a cheese and olive snack pot (for the civilised pre-dinner wine in a plastic cup) and some cocktail sausages - sadly not honey and mustard as they were sold out! Also sadly said cocktail sausages won't be making it anywhere near a flight since they're already half eaten 😂

So yes @RedToothBrush, that's an extra 2766 unnecessary calories! A VERY unhealthy relationship with food... or maybe I just like the odd treat. I'm sure 3 weeks of travelling, hiking and fresh fish will more than balance it out, and if I take a liking to Japanese McDonalds I'm going to embrace it anyway

Yes their honey mustard ones are amazing

Farmageddon · 04/10/2023 19:37

This sounds like a fab idea OP, I'm super jealous - enjoy your holiday.

I know it sounds a bit weird but I would recommend maybe packing some medjool dates or similar just in case your a bit constipated after all those lovely stodgy nibbles. I eat pretty healthy most of the time but if I'm travelling and eating crap for a few days I definitely notice the difference.

A good friend of mind cuts them open puts peanut butter in the middle and then rolls them up and covers them with dark chocolate - so delicious!

IdealisticCynic · 04/10/2023 19:37

I know it’s too late, but I’m shocked no one suggested the M&S all butter cheese twists. The perfect savoury snack.

The chocolate rice cakes (which are not too sweet) deserve an honourable mention too.

Why is hummus confiscated?! Do you mean through security?

Because it contains sesame

I’m sure it is, but not on a plane. Please.

Are you getting mixed up with semtex?!

Ashleysaidwhat · 04/10/2023 20:05

@DrMarshaFieldstone give it a rest. We get the point 🙄

I said it once when someone suggested cashews, and once more when someone suggested a nutty salad, which I think is a pretty clear indication that no, not everyone has ’got the point’.

Zhampagne · 04/10/2023 20:12

There are multiple posts suggesting nuts and peanuts so I don’t think folk have got the point at all!

Glad you have your snacks, OP. Safe travels!

Flossflower · 04/10/2023 20:22

JonjoMonjo21 · 04/10/2023 10:35

Honey roasted cashew nuts, the cream cheese and chive crisps

I don’t think you are supposed to take nuts on planes.

ChesapeakeBay · 04/10/2023 20:33

@DrMarshaFieldstone I don't get why no nuts? They serve them on planes and unless someone has an allergy in which case you're informed not to have any.

Otherwise, crack on?

mrsbyers · 04/10/2023 20:33

No hummus is classed as a liquid , the pack was 90g too and I’m sure hummus is denser than water so couldn’t be more than 100 mls but nope in the bin at Heathrow it went

Millybob · 04/10/2023 20:48

I'd take some sweet things to eat in Japan. Some of their snacks are a bit of a shock to the British palate in terms of taste and texture... (red bean paste). They are not horrible, but possibly wouldn't satisfy a craving for something sweet / familiar.

Absolutely this! I was gutted when my Malteser supply ran out before the end of my first week in China.

therealcookiemonster · 04/10/2023 20:51

peanuts an obvious choice... their cheese curls are delicious... their chocolate bars...

and if you are going through dubai, grab some food there. they have nice options.
