best flapjack recipe: does it exist?

If I use rolled oats, the flapjack is dense, firm but a little tasteless.
If i use jumbo oats, the flapjack falls apart.
I had a recipe that used both types of oats, but alas I have lost the recipe!
I can't re-create it, and am wasting oats, golden syrup, sugar and baking marg on sub-standard results.
My flapjacks tend to turn into granola .
Please share your foolproof flapjack recipes, including what temperature you put the oven on at, cooking time, and size of baking tin, thanks!
I have sporty kids and flapjacks are a perfect pre-sport snack!

Thanks! Never heard of it but sounds interesting.

No problem, it's really nutritious, lots of amino acids, high fibre, looks like sand but when made like a porrige it has a slight nutty taste.

A pinch of salt is also a must

So, I've just done my research and I found the original recipe online in September 2006 in response to a MN thread asking for a recipe including condensed milk. I found a blog with Halohoney saying she created a recipe to mimic M&S flapjacks in 2008. I can only assume we found the same "original" source. Hers has the sugar I decided could be left out to reduce the sweetness.

there's no such thing as an original recipe 😂😂

I know HaloHoney from another forum (and in real life now)😂

Placemarking. U have one with desiccated coconut

NorthernGirlie · 29/09/2023 20:07

Condensed milk?? As in Carnation? How does anyone discover this madness?

I'm definitely making these!

coxesorangepippin · 29/09/2023 20:17

Came on to mention soupdragon's infamous recipe

Isthistheendoflifeasweknowit · 29/09/2023 20:30

There's a vegan/ dairy free condensed milk....carnation i think 🤔 be giving this a go tomorrow!

BareBelliedSneetch · 29/09/2023 20:37

Vegan condensed milk is grim. I tried these with it. Don’t go there.

Sourisblanche · 29/09/2023 20:37

Slightly off topic, but I made Nigella’s Blondies this week and that also uses a tin of condensed milk.

saraclara · 29/09/2023 20:42

Can someone whose flapjacks fall apart, pleaser give me their recipe! I love soft flapjacks, especially those that have dates or apricots in the middle. I don't want any crunch or hard bits. Just soft sweetness.

(If anyone lives in Whitby, I want them to turn out like the ones from Whitby Deli!)

CurlyWurly1991 · 29/09/2023 20:45

The trick is to let it cool before cutting

Heyhoherewegoagain · 29/09/2023 20:48

Whatever recipe you use, use butter not margarine!

I can feel my waistline expanding

Polkadotpjs · 29/09/2023 21:10

@SoupDragon I have a version that someone gave me as being yours with sugar in!! Have I been duped? They're like crack. Even previous flapjack hating DS loves them and all of teen DS friends went mad for them when they went camping - I was offered a fiver to make some more

Useyourfork · 29/09/2023 21:29

200g butter - or butter substitute
200g sugar
200g liquid sugar - syrup/ treacle/ honey etc.
400g oats (fine ones not jumbo)
40g of whatever else you want to put in eg, nuts coconut

heat up sugar and butter and any flavourings ( I like orange zest with cinnamon and cardamom with the treacle)
then mix in the oats.
bake

Can someone pleeeease help me out with how much half a tin of condensed milk is?

TomatoSandwiches · 29/09/2023 21:50

@MooseBeTimeForSnow just under 200g.

Pascha · 29/09/2023 21:51

The tins are just under 400g so I guess about 200g but honestly, I just eyeball it.

AdoraBell · 29/09/2023 21:52

Place marking, really need some this weekend.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 29/09/2023 21:54

Thanks all. I’ll weigh it out. This tin is 300ml

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/09/2023 21:59

Bows down to @SoupDragon

You are obv the queen of flapjacks

Lockthedoorbehindyou · 29/09/2023 22:01

Does Soup Dragon's recipe result in chewy or crunchy flapjacks? I lprefet them to be like granola that's just holding together.

The tin of condensed milk in my cupboard is 397g. It's the standard size I think. So I guess for this recipe you'd be looking to use c200g.

grababanana · 29/09/2023 22:12

I've found this BBC food one to be perfect, works a treat every time though you do need a food processor.

250g jumbo porridge oatss_
• 125g butter,,_ plus extra for the tin
• 125g light brown sugarr_
• 2-3 tbsp golden syrupp_ (depending on how gooey you want it)

Method
• STEP 1Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Put the oats, butter, sugar and golden syrup in a food processor and pulse until mixed – be careful not to overmix or the oats may lose their texture.

• STEP 2Lightly butter a 20 x 20cm baking tin and add the mixture. Press into the corners with the back of a spoon so the mixture is flat and score into 12 squares. Bake for around 15 mins until golden brown.
