I love Kim Chong and Vadasz brands but wow it's an expensive topping for cheese on toast 😂

Moopsi · 14/02/2023 23:30

I absolutely love kimchi. Might sound weird but I love it with cheese and crackers!

I can't eat it any more though as it gives me instant diarrhoea 😪

GroggyLegs · 14/02/2023 23:36

I put it in my sandwiches, or just eat it out of the jar 😳

louderthan · 14/02/2023 23:40

I love kimchi.

If you don’t like it spicy, you can get white kimchi. Or water kimchi. There are lots of different types of kimchi.

I love white kimchi and also bachelor kimchi, made with radish.

Thatcatisdrivingmenuts · 14/02/2023 23:46

I hated it for ages but the turmeric one I have found is quite nice.

MrsTokyo10 · 15/02/2023 00:36

Yes I regularly eat kimchi mixed with Japanese natto which is fermented soybeans for breakfast.

journeyofinsanity · 15/02/2023 03:45

Ignorant t people calling a national dish horrible or yuk. It would be more appropriate to say you don't like it. Not state that it's bad as if it's a fact.

polkadotpixie · 15/02/2023 06:59

I just eat it out of the jar 🤣

Hubblebubble · 15/02/2023 08:33

@AdventFridgeOfShame wow! Do you make your own?

Karwomannghia · 15/02/2023 08:35

No. Dh made some which has been in the fridge for about 2 years and he hasn’t touched but refuses to throw it away because ego. But it looks disgusting and has put me off the idea!

Cheekyandfreaky · 14/02/2023 22:15

How do you make it please?

I've used a few different recipes. One by Maanghi, one by a Korean woman who lives in the UK, whose name I don't remember but it was on a youtube video - she recommends using swede to replace Korean radish, which DH and I both thought worked very well.

I used shrimp paste, fish sauce and anchovy in the last one I made, but I can't remember which recipe it was I used!

I store it in a glass jar - back when I was a newbie I used a plastic container to make it and it took about six months for the smell to clear!

@Thatcatisdrivingmenuts Please could I have the recipe for your turmeric version?

Do they still sell them in Costco, I've looked for the past 12 months in the one near me and nothing 🤷‍♀️ makes me sad

I buy mine on line.

Fairysilver · 15/02/2023 16:47

I must be getting the wrong stuff because I love fiery heat and I hadn't noticed a taste of anything other than overpowering vinegar. I pour chilli oil on to add flavour.

Crumpetdisappointment · 15/02/2023 20:22

the brand i have is K eats

This is the best kimchi you can buy! Jongga - Starry Mart sell it online. It’s amazing.

I will post my kimchi recipe once I’ve worked out weight. I just usually slap everything in.

Does it have to have anchovies or other fish stuff or can you buy or make it veggie? Love the idea of eating fermented stuff for gut health.

Maangchi has a vegetarian recipe.

hryllilegur · 15/02/2023 21:37

This recipe (www.seriouseats.com/homemade-vegan-kimchi-recipe) uses miso to replicate the role shrimp paste plays.

You can def make it veggie 👌

bigbabycooker · 15/02/2023 21:40

Sorry if you've had this already, but I tend to put it in sandwiches - with a bit of mayo, lettuce, avocado, cold chicken, it's really good.

clare8allthepies · 14/02/2023 22:04

I have quite liked kimchi the couple of times that I’ve tried it. Don’t think I could be bothered to make my own though, is there a particular brand that’s good?

Here for my pet obsession which is to tell you all that if you eat pasteurised fermented foods/drinks - ie any that are shelf-stable and don't have to be kept in the fridge - all the microbes have been killed and you'll get no benefit in terms of gut health and thus mental health and anti-inflammatory protection and all the things that they are now discovering your microbiome does.

It makes me really cross that manufacturers dont' have to say if it's pasteurised and absolutely furious when hipster brands tout the 'fermented' bit when they must know the truth.

Fairislefandango · 15/02/2023 22:16

Jesus Christ the vile descriptions on here! Just because you don’t understand a food doesn’t make it vile, or gross or anything else. You are just uneducated.

Confused It's nothing to do with understanding or education. It's called having different tastes. I'm well-educated and there are hardly any foods I dislike, whatever their origin or culture. I think kimchi is horrible though. I'm generally not a fan of fermented or vinegary foods, and neither is my digestion! Expressing a strong dislike for a particular food isn't offensive (unless you're saying it to a host who's just served it to you!).
