If you are going to be very inconvenienced by this decision please reply to the Twitter thread and tell Tesco what you use cornflour for in your kitchen:

I use vast quantities and cannot fathom it not being in everyones kitchen - how do you fry your chicken?

I've never fried chicken, it wouldn't occur to me to fry chicken.

I don’t think that what people use it for matters if they’re not buying it from Tesco.

Amazon @VanGoghsDog also handy for bamboo shoots and coconut milk.

Thank you. I get coconut milk and bamboo shoots on Lidl. But I'll look on Amazon for gravy browning.

StarboysMum · 15/11/2022 12:38

Thanks @mandolinwind.

We use cornflour all the time. Sauces, coatings, Yorkshire puddings. Basic staple in our house. DH and DM are GF but would use cornflour regardless.

What?!

Oblomov22 · 15/11/2022 12:39

Eh?

Agree it's just a sneaky way to bring it back at a higher price and a reduced to weight.

In a pan with oil

I don’t.

I would buy a packet of cheese or white sauce that would probably be cheaper than buying all of the ingredients and easier to make as well.

Its like Pesto. Who can be arsed making pesto when you can buy a jar from Asda for a quid?!

Me, because the supermarket stuff is absolute shite and I don't prioritise convenience above everything else.

Packet cheese sauce is terrible too - the best thing about making your own cheese sauce is that you can use your favourite cheese, rather than the rejected mi of whatever was leftover in the factory.

AllTheLeaveAreBrown · 15/11/2022 12:41

I make a fabulous hot chocolate, just cocoa powder, milk and sugar. I use a teaspoon of cornflour to thicken it...it goes all creamy and thick and feels really luxurious!

I use it as an emergency dry shampoo.

Oh and of course for regular cooking, especially if I've cooked in the instant pot.

Ihavedogs · 15/11/2022 12:42

@badbaduncle I don’t have chicken but use cornflour all the time when frying tofu. I normally pick it up in Lidl.

Oblomov22 · 15/11/2022 12:42

I too only use it once a year or so, for thickening. White sauces I use flour and butter roux. But it's the principle! Toe-rags!

I make pesto occasionally, it's a totally different thing to the stuff you buy.

I always make my own cheese sauce. It has never crossed my mind to buy a packet sauce for that.

How does hot chocolate work as emergency dry shampoo? 😉

But…..I don’t understand. How do people make white/cheese sauce if not with cornflour?!

I don’t either. It’s the only way I can guarantee no lumps.

I make white sauce with flour. Sometimes wholemeal (which does make it a funny colour, but better for you).

I just make it without lumps :)

With wheat flour, like a normal person. 🤣

Cameleongirl · 15/11/2022 12:46

Wow, that would impact me, except I don’t have a Tesco’s locally. I use cornflour regularly to thicken soups, gravy, etc. But if no one’s buying it, I can see their point.

I didn’t realise you could buy cheese sauce ready made until I was in my 20s… it just never occurred to me that was a thing. It is gross though, homemade all the way. I do slum it with shop bought pesto though, it’s a faff and more expensive to make at home.

Cameleongirl · 15/11/2022 12:48

@VanGoghsDog I use plain or wheat flour if I’ve run out of cornflour, but I find it more of a faff, definitely more prone to lumps.

Although that may also be my lack of technique. 😂

Fireballxl5 · 15/11/2022 12:48

I use cornflour weekly, thicken curries and stews, make sauces and use in cup cakes.
It’s also necessary for rolling out petal paste and if you want to make your own icing sugar.

closingloop · 15/11/2022 12:50

FatOaf · 15/11/2022 12:30

I do use cornflour but I've never used it to make cheese sauce. Doesn't that start with a roux?

Yes. A roux made from butter and cornflour.

I've never heard of making a roux with cornflour, why would you do it?

Is it a coeliac/gluten free thing? Why make a roux instead of just chucking the cornflour in?

Packet cheese sauce has the consistency and taste of pus

Yup. Obviously I’m a rubbish cook because I can’t make a white sauce without lumps unless I use cornflour. I’ve just ordered 3kg from Amazon.

Crinkle77 · 15/11/2022 12:51

How annoying, was looking for it in Tesco last week and couldn't find it. My mum is coeliac and we use it for thickening stews and stuff. How annoying!
