If you are going to be very inconvenienced by this decision please reply to the Twitter thread and tell Tesco what you use cornflour for in your kitchen:

Tesco aren't discontinuing it, it's a change of supplier & packaging it seems

I hope it's not going into a box. I had to buy last one in a box in Aldi as Tesco had none for ages. It's a nightmare 🙈

It's a product that is a kitchen staple.

There are already dozens of products that can no longer be ordered online from Tesco like their 9 and 24 roll packs of own brand loo roll, their boxes of value tissues, their mint choc ices, certain cuts of fresh turkey, I would have been dammed annoyed if they had decided to discontinue cornflour.

Mint choc ices 🤣 STILL not essential OP!

9 and 24 rolls of toilet roll were discontinued because they are winding the paper tighter on the rolls to save space, environmental benefits of can fit more on a lorry so less trips.

The 6 x 50% larger rolls are OK and this is what we buy now instead of the 9 and 24 packs but the new double length rolls won't fit on many loo roll holders.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/11/15/cornflour-disappears-supermarket-shelves-could-soon-gone-forever/

"A spokesman for Tesco responded by saying: “Cornflour has been discontinued because of low customer demand I'm afraid.”

This prompted outrage on the internet forum for parents, Mumsnet, with users saying that although they often didn’t buy the product more than once every six months, it was still an essential part of their food cupboard.

Tesco vows to 'improve availability' in stores

When asked to clarify whether this remark was true, Tesco claimed they had not completely delisted cornflour and would attempt to improve availability across its stores..."

Have you not read my update from the Tesco Twitter admin?

It's already in a packet. I keep one of the old tubs that it used to come in and decant it into that.

I use it all the time! I add it to SR flour to make cake flour, I use it to make custard for filling profiteroles (I make croquembouches to sell!), I use it for rolling out fondant icing so it doesn’t stick - icing sugar just makes it’s sticky. I use it for thickening sauces, making chocolate custard etc. very annoying if it’s not easily available any more.

And it is a good way to make white and cheese sauces. It's one of the reasons for it's invention to make that kind of things easier.

Apparently not. I said early on that I didn’t know you could make white and cheese sauce without it and I don’t think I’ve been quoted so much on a mumsnet thread ever 😆 I have been thoroughly educated!

I also couldn't find cream of tartar in Tesco recently so I suspect that has also stopped being sold.

I have a giant tub that I bought during Lockdown 1 when baking powder was impossible to get hold of. It will last me until my end.

I am not sure making your own pesto is more expensive than buying a jar. Sure you can buy a cheap jar for a quid from Asda but the better brands are more like 3.50. A pot of fresh basil is 75p at Lidl. Yes, you also need to have olive oil and cheese and nuts but not much.

The pine nuts would be the deal breaker as they are very expensive to buy – then again, I doubt the cheap jars (or even the expensive jars) contain many actual pine nuts.

I use cashews because they're easier to get hold of.

paintitallover · 16/11/2022 15:24

I never use cornflour for gravy or savoury sauces, just plain flour, but how on earth to make a lemon meringue pie?!

Ha ha you poor thing.the things that finally make you mumsnet famous eh😯
But don't worry.your fellow heathen of the purist white sauces is here by your side.😋bet would we also fail to.make a chicken last a year too!
I think we've always done it because mum and dad did.its done the same as a roux just more controlled and easier.you still melt the butter and add the cf(usually flour) and then add milk.but it was to make it simpler.and to us it's just always been how it's done.so we would deff need more than people on here mention keeping boxes for years.i mean we eat plenty of lasagne.😊

Deathraystare · 22/11/2022 16:08

I guess Chinese stores would stock Cornflour. They use it a lot in cooking.

saraclara · 22/11/2022 16:14

It hadn't shipped selling corn flour. It's discontinued its own brand corn flour.

I don't know how many times I've had to say this on the other thread
