If you are going to be very inconvenienced by this decision please reply to the Twitter thread and tell Tesco what you use cornflour for in your kitchen:

I never use it in white or cheese sauce though! I make a roux with flour and butter

My mind is blown. I can’t believe I never knew you could make it with normal
flour (and yes, now I’m writing that, it is flipping obvious) 🤦‍♀️

What a coincidence I had to ask a member of staff in tesco on the weekend where the cornflour was. She looked at the app thing and said that cornflour would not register. I guess it is off to Sainsbury's then this week.

Yes, Waitrose, Sainsbury, Morrisons and M&S still stock it and it's available from some smaller retailers, too. Tesco lists Brown & Poulson cornflour (which is more expensive than own brand) but that is displaying as unavailable at the moment.

Annoying, as we do all our weekly shop at a large Tesco and our local grocery store is a Tesco Express.

DH and I did two entire laps of our local big Tesco the other day looking for it to no avail 🙁

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2022 12:05

I use it to make these www.oliviascuisine.com/sequilhos-cornstarch-cookies/

Happy cooking!

I use vast quantities and cannot fathom it not being in everyones kitchen - how do you fry your chicken?

Yes, cheese sauce made as a roux with plain flour tastes much better than cornflour and for casseroles cooked in the oven, I prefer sealing the meat first dusted in seasoned plain flour which results in a silky and better flavoured gravy. But I still use cornflour at the end of cooking for thickening dishes cooked on the hob.

I also replace an ounce of plain flour per 12 ounces with cornflour or with fine semolina when making shortbread.

I use it mostly for Chinese style dishes but even though they're weekly I still only use four or five boxes a year.
They stopped selling the bisto powder so I ended up with a big tub from Amazon.

What can you use instead of cornflour?

You can buy tubs of thickening granules but I've never tried them. There is also potato flour (farina) but I've not tried that, either.

Mac n cheese, fried chicken, Macaroni pie, white gravy for chicken, gravy for roast dinners, Chinese fried dishes, fried fish. DH is taking this very personally

Flapjackquack · 15/11/2022 12:17

Cornflour makes for the best crispy coating on fried chicken (healthy!). I can’t believe they are discontinuing it, I consider it a cupboard staple.

Fifthtimelucky · 15/11/2022 12:23

Like others, I use cornflour but not often (my current box has a best before date of February 2021)!

I use plain flour for sauces, gravy and sealing meat. The only thing I can think of that I currently use cornflour for is sweet and sour tofu, but I've only started making that in the last couple of years (since my daughter became a vegan) so I must have had it for something before that.

Thymeout · 15/11/2022 12:24

Not available in JS. Waitrose out of stock on-line. I've been looking for the last month. Thought it was due to Ukraine. Where it used to be in Tesco is now full of small bags of fancy bread flours from Dove. I suppose there's a bigger margin on them.

But v annoying. Best way to thicken liquids without lumps.

Parker231 · 15/11/2022 12:25

Have never bought cornflour - not something I ever use/need.

Matilda1981 · 15/11/2022 12:28

I’ve never used cornflour! And I make a lot of meals from scratch - i use plain flour for thickening everything and cheese sauce etc!

GoodnightGentleBoris · 15/11/2022 12:30

I’ve never bought cornflour either, I use breadcrumbs for fried chicken and normal flour for white sauce

Feel I’m missing out now!

FatOaf · 15/11/2022 12:30

I do use cornflour but I've never used it to make cheese sauce. Doesn't that start with a roux?

Yes. A roux made from butter and cornflour.

Jericha · 15/11/2022 12:32

Oooh I tried to buy some in my online shop last week for my lemon meringue pie, wondered why it wasn't on there.

AlisonDonut · 15/11/2022 12:32

I've literally just eaten my lunch of mac and cheese made with a cornflour and butter roux. My kitchen is never without it.

Threadkillacilla · 15/11/2022 12:33

It might just be because I learnt from my nan but to me cornflour seems more velvety.

VanGoghsDog · 15/11/2022 12:33

I use it, but so little I've not bought any since I moved to this house five years ago!

Saw some in B&M at the weekend, for those who are struggling to find it.

I can never find gravy browning!

FatOaf · 15/11/2022 12:33

Like a PP, I had a problem a few years ago when all the local supermarkets stopped selling Bisto gravy powder. But, eventually, they all brought it back.

BlackForestCake · 15/11/2022 12:34

Thin bleach seems to have vanished everywhere. Can one just dilute thick bleach?

No because thick bleach isn't more concentrated bleach, it just contains thickeners so it clings to the toilet bowl. (I think)

Threadkillacilla · 15/11/2022 12:34

Amazon @VanGoghsDog also handy for bamboo shoots and coconut milk.

Tesco currently has packets of the original Bisto powder:

www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/254880743

They used to do a Bisto powder for chicken gravy some years ago, which was lighter and nicer than the original (which is still far too salty) but I think that was replaced with chicken granules.
