laya why is this an 'either' 'or' worry?

I mean, there is always something worse we can try and change, but that doesn't mean we should ignore the other stuff. Else we'd get nowhere and we'd all sit on our backsides naming yet more sad cases that are more important, but doing nothing...sigh

Agree that we should try and do something. I don't think anyone is saying the opposite, but our tactics are different. I think targeting consumers is wrong. The government and supermarkets control the food industry.

£2.50 for TWO plants? You woz robbed!

You could buy two packs of pepper seeds for that much and grow 15 good plants.

You dont need growbags either. They are pretty rubbish anyway because tomatoes put out roots from higher up the stem as they grow. They can go in pots, or, in the ground. As long as they have sun and a bamboo/stick to lean against then that's it. Using grass clippings nad veg peelings, egg shells and teabags to put in free compost bin from the council provides plenty of nutrient rich compost after a while.

Before i go can i just point out that animals should be at least almost equal to humans - they have feelings, they feel pain, they need rest. What makes humans so special if they will make animals suffer so that they can have two lives for a fiver?

It's not that chickens are more important, it's that they should be as important.

Maybe you should all grow some weed and chill out a bit.

We learnt our lesson with the gro-bags. And yes, we were ripped for the pepper plants. But boy those toms need 24hr care don't they???

noddyholder · 09/01/2008 23:10

Look get rid of your big tellys your big jeeps and your designer buggies and you can eat free range and organic for life.

TheIceQueen · 09/01/2008 23:11

exactly "at least almost equal" - not equal. Therefore I reserve my right to spend my limited resources on produce that will benefit the humans (ie fairtrade - not big business LOL) rather than the animals.

If/when money allows I shall then buy ethically produced meat/milk etc too.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/01/2008 23:11

HAng on - I didnt read that properly!!!...£5 for TWO plants!!! Even ready grown potted up jobbies go for 99p each down this way.

I always end up germinating too many plants and am loathed to throw then in the compost bin. Am happy post spare plants to those who want this year?

Growing your own veg is terribly expensive... unless you grow what VVV does - salad & herbs are expensive to buy but cheap to grow and you can crop it all season and grow radish & spring onions etc in between.

Courgettes are also economic - I only have 2 plants but usually get about 30+ courgettes from them. And beans - French beans can be mad cropping things. My neighbour brings over carrier bags full.

MicrowaveOnly · 09/01/2008 23:12

Rhubarb, the chicken does come before the farmner in the sense that, the farmer is not being made to live in a shed and sleep in his own excrement.

that is what we are arguing against.

His low pay is irrelevant. It is not an excuse to cause suffering to animals.

Would you abuse animals as a job? no...one would hope you'd change proffession rather than torture these creatures.

Rhubarb · 09/01/2008 23:12

oops, it's not a right it's a luxury.
But unfortunately a lot of people are not that good in the kitchen and wouldn't know what to do with a lentil or what a soya bean was. I don't like vegetarian food and yes I have tried all kinds. But I stick by my blood group theory.

If I could be self-sufficient, with meat as well as veg, I would. But don't take my fried chicken away!

Noddy, you are very kind I know that, you know that your last statement is rubbish and insulting.

microwave, I just conceded that to you, the farmers standard of living is not as important as the welfare of the chicken. That's fine, that's what you believe. I believe differently.

TheIceQueen · 09/01/2008 23:14

oh yes - the big TV that we've had for 6yrs and is about to die (well it was "big" when we bought it - looks tiny in comparison to TV's these days), the Ford fiesta that we squeeze 3 children into the back of, the only pushchair/pram I intend to have for DS3.....they make such a difference to our ability to buy free-range meat

donnie · 09/01/2008 23:15

me too aviatrix , I'm with noddy on this one!

I dont find them much hassle with the cherry varieties. Although I do tend to go for varieties that dont need pinching out etc . Excess toms can be pureed or made into soup/sauce to extend their usage/season.

I do HATE the smell of tomato plants though - especially when you've been manhandling them and its on your hands.

MarsLady · 09/01/2008 23:15

Let's have grown up .... Coffee/fried breakfast/cake tomorrow afternoon. In fact... why not a late lunch?
