'the fault lies with supermarkets and the governments and not with the consumers'

a poor argument. Consumers are responsible for their own actions, blaming the govnt and Supermarkets is a cop out.

You choose what you put in your trolley.

TheIceQueen · 09/01/2008 22:59

hello .

I've been around - and busy looking after the 3 DS's.

squareheadcut · 09/01/2008 22:59

i really believe the only way that governments and big business change their minds is when their votes and their pockets are hit.

consumers are the only ones that are going to change this.

Then oops, targeting the consumer is a no-brainer. As you said, we already know what goes on. I knew as far back as college what happened to these hens and the transport issues of animals such as lamb and pigs.

But when a single parent comes across 2 fat chickens for a fiver compared to one scrawny one for the same price, can you blame them for picking the former?

Concentrate on changing government policy and supermarkets. Demand that farm workers get paid fair wages and that farmers are given fair prices for their poultry. Demand incentives for converting to free-range stock. There are lots you can do, but targeting the consumer is below the belt.

MicrowaveOnly · 09/01/2008 23:01

Rhubarb in case you hadn't notice we do not live in a communist state where everyone is equal (that didn't last) and so the fact that migrant workers etc don't get paid enough to buy free range tickets is a most bizarre argument.

and if they did, the cost would be added to the chicken and you would NEVER be able to afford it

MarsLady · 09/01/2008 23:01

lol Oops! Did your esses eat too much chicken?

Are you home? I'm about this week!

noddyholder · 09/01/2008 23:02

Haven't read the whole thread but I do think it is worth just buying one decent chicken and having beans on toast on the other night! If you believe in karma then it is impossible to eat that chicken which has lived on pure misery and cruelty. The ones running around outside looked like a totally different species never mind a differnet chicken. If you can't afford it you can't afford it so why not eat something else.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/01/2008 23:02

What did the previous owners use the greenhouse for then?

You dont need lots of space QOQ. REally.

Even a few pots would grow some choice bits. Gardeners World did an experiment with it. They used all sorts of containers (including recycling huge olive oil cans and spare tyres. Have a google. If you cant grow - then get your DS's to have a go. They will LOVE it. AND be more inclined to eat it.

Rhubarb · 09/01/2008 23:03

Well I grew tomatoes and peppers. I paid £5 for two pepper plants and I got 2 peppers from them. We also paid around £2 for bags of tomato seeds and then we paid for gro-bags and tomato feed. We got some nice tomatoes but they were all gone within a month and they take a HUGE amount of effort!

Heathcliffscathy · 09/01/2008 23:03

vvv we are going to dig up our lawn!!!

layalittleeggforme · 09/01/2008 23:03

I think Cod had it right when she said she would much rather worry about children in poverty.

They are chickens fgs !!!!!!

This country worrys more about animals than children, but that's another thread.

MicrowaveOnly · 09/01/2008 23:03

good one noddy - if you can't afford a happy chicken then eat something else. I shall apply that to my other foods.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 09/01/2008 23:04

Did I say migrant workers?

Obv microwave, the chicken comes before the worker. Silly me for answering your question only to be told that my answer is bizarre.

Children in poverty is a seperate issue though and is shocking in this day and age but the 2 aren't linked.

TheIceQueen · 09/01/2008 23:05

haha - the beans on toast comes up again.

Please tell me honestly - i'm not the only person on MN whose children and OH would NOT be satisfied by beans on toast for dinner.......am I???

I have no idea what the previous owners used it for - don't think they gardened either judging from the state the greenhouse and garden were in when we arrived here .

I don't have a problem getting the DS's to eat their fruit and veg.....it's me that's DH has a problem with - which reminds me I still haven't eaten my dinner

Rhubarb · 09/01/2008 23:05

aviatrix - so do cows.

TodayToday · 09/01/2008 23:05

"OMG i'd save the chicken - just think of the crispy skin"
