Lunch ideas for someone who hates lunch

Larryyourwaiter · 24/10/2021 00:28

I hate lunch, I always have. If I eat too much I feel sleepy, if I eat too little I get really hungry.
I can’t eat soup at lunchtime, or baked potatoes, I don’t like sandwiches, I really hate wraps, cold leftovers are rank, mayonnaise is disgusting, salad is a waste of time.

For work I force myself to have a sandwich as I am starving so I eat it. At the weekends though I refuse and like today I’ve ended up in a grumpy mess.
Sometimes I have poached eggs (which I can’t cook personally) or a bacon roll which is fine occasionally.
Is there some secret lunch idea that I am missing at nearly 50. I cook A LOT and I think lunches feel like an idea too far….

Any amazing ideas that require no effort.

A cheeseboard - cheese, oatcakes, crackers, celery, grapes, olives, pickles. I can't be bothered at lunch . I often just have dry oatcakes or crackers with a milky tea or coffee at work. Sometimes just a couple of milky drinks. At home, fish and plain veg. make a good light lunch that keeps you energised. If you put fish or veg. in microwave then you are in effect steaming them. Very healthful and labour-saving. You can poach eggs in microwave too. Microwave dishes for steaming/poaching make it even easier.

Cereal? Crumpets? Toast? Pot noodles? Basically student food? If you hate cooking and you hate food I can see it's very difficult.

kittenkipping · 24/10/2021 01:01

What do you eat for other meals? What makes lunch so different?

ItsDinah · 24/10/2021 01:09

Melon and parma ham. I f you're feeling really indulgent, lobster. Just boil the lobster. Much easier than boiling an egg .Get a big plate a sharp knife, a packet of butter and a roll of kitchen paper. If you're feeling chi-chi,get a butter knife and a napkin, perhaps even a fork but that risks straying into bourgeois Cut a bit of butter and dunk bits of the hot lobster in it. Goes well with champagne to drink.

Blondie1984 · 24/10/2021 02:05

I have things on toast - smoked mackerel pate, Brussels pate, cheese, beans

Smoked salmon with avocado and oatcakes

Wraps, spread with hummus, grated carrot and some cooked chicken

If all else fails I have Greek yoghurt, granola and berries

Fleetheart · 24/10/2021 02:14

huel hot and savoury very nice and no effort. also healthy! my favourite is madras.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 24/10/2021 02:48

What food do you actually enjoy eating? Why not just make more the previous evening and then have the leftovers for lunch?

GoingForA · 24/10/2021 03:57

I'd probably have cornflakes or an apple

Kanaloa · 24/10/2021 03:58

Whatever you eat for breakfast? Or maybe build a few snacks (fruit, cheese etc) in between breakfast and dinner?

Sparklfairy · 24/10/2021 04:00

Sorry but the suggestion of lobster for lunch is peak mumsnet.

sashh · 24/10/2021 04:52

I have a 'bento' lunch box with 5 compartments, so I do:

1 carb
1 protein
1 fruit
1 veg
1 extra

so I might do

1 - cous cous
1 - boiled egg
1 - satsuma
1 - carrot stick
1 hummus

Have you tried different breads? Crusty roll rather than a white sliced sandwich?
Bread sticks and a dip?

You can make a sort of poached egg in a microwave

Get a ramakin and lightly butter it or spread oil so you can get the egg out.

Break an egg into the ramakin and THIS IS IMPORTANT pierce the yolk with a knife or cocktail tick, if you don't it will explode

Put in the microwave on a low power and cook for 2 mins, you ight need a bit longer, it depends on the egg and your microwave.

I know you said you don't like wraps but try this if you have left over chilli and rice.

Open a pack of tortillas, put some chilli and rice in the middle, you can add cheese as well.

Fold the tortilla into a square and put in a baking dish seam side down, do the same with the others.

Bake for 20 mins, the tortilla will be quite crisp, you can eat straight away or leave to go cold and take with you.

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/10/2021 05:26

Wedge of frittata. Cold or warmed up in microwave.
Bit of salad.

Peak Mumsnet speak or tongue in cheek Whichever it is my chin is on my chest Anyway OP cereal or crumpets maybe scrambled egg brunch type stuff might work
SevenZebrasDancing · 24/10/2021 05:35

I usually do leftovers from dinner for lunch. Particularly as work has a microwave so it is easy. But I get you, I dislike sandwiches and soup as well. (Actually I said to DH last week that i was giving up on soup. I'm 48 and finally just accepting it's not for me).

crankysaurus · 24/10/2021 05:52

Crikey, lobster??

I sometimes have toasted pittas with hummus and chilli sauce and maybe some sliced tomato or something. Made up just before you eat though, pre-made pittas aren't great in a lunchbox. Saying that, sandwiches can be a bit bleugh if they've been made some time previously and can be much nicer if you take the component parts to work to assemble (bread buttered in advance).

And there are some fancy pot noodles about, like chicken ramen flavour, and curry pasties that are low effort.

JuneJuly · 24/10/2021 06:07

" Crikey, lobster?? "...

... with Champagne no less!😂

jamandmarmalade · 24/10/2021 06:07

pot noodle? lobster flavour obvs

TreeSmuggler · 24/10/2021 06:13

Eat what you like? If your question was, for example, what can I eat for lunch at work that is healthy, and work doesn't have a fridge, that might be something people could give ideas for. But what can I eat? How do we know what you like?

picklemewalnuts · 24/10/2021 06:42

Have cereal, if you like cereal.
A slice of cake or flapjack, a chunk of cheese and an apple or two.
Protein Yogurt with oats and berries.
A smoothie? With lots of seeds and nuts so it's filling.
A pasty or sausage roll?

I used to eat one of those onken bio pots. That was before I paid attention to labels, so I don't know what's in it!

It would help to know your dietary needs. I am overweight so lots of these options don't suit me. If you need to put weight on then the world is your oyster to have with the lobster, natch.

Chilled custard straight out of the tin was nice, if I remember rightly.

catnidge · 24/10/2021 06:46

I alternate between, selection of fruit, Greek yoghurt and Berries or small pot of cottage cheese.

I'm not keen on lunch either so just have something which keeps me going through the afternoon.

sashh · 24/10/2021 08:08

Really sweetie?

They sell them in Lidl, these days.

Peak mumsnet lunch would be delivered by Fortnum's by horse and carriage.

Larryyourwaiter · 24/10/2021 09:25

Just to clarify…

I do cook, I do all the cooking, cooking at lunchtime is another fucking thing to do and I cannot be arsed.
I’ve tried other breads. I still hate sandwiches. I will take sandwiches for work still as I can’t see me making anything else at 6.30am and also the kitchen at work is grim, especially the microwave.
I’ve never enjoyed leftovers.
Pot Noodles are for 14 year old boys.

I don’t have any dietary requirements apart from not wanting to cook and something palatable magically appear in front of me.

And lobster…..no.
Just no.

NoSquirrels · 24/10/2021 09:29

So you don’t like leftovers heated up, soup or baked potatoes or cold stuff or bread or sandwiches?

Yeah, you’re buggered really.

Quiche? Picnic style tapas/mezze- keep selection in fridge at beginning of week chuck random bits in as you fancy them.

NoSquirrels · 24/10/2021 09:30

Plus, make someone else cook weekend lunch for you?

RampantIvy · 24/10/2021 09:34

Do you think you have a difficult relationship with food, given that you seem to hate everything and are so negative about various options?

What is your problem with soup? It comes in so many different forms and flavours.

Pasta salad?
Hummus and tortilla chips, plus raw veg?
Spanish tortilla?
