The microwave has died - how do I do Jacket potatoes in the oven?

They are in there atm, just scrubbed and put on the shelf. Should I put them in foil? What temp? and how long?

I am so ashamed, I know this is almost as bad as asking how to boil an egg - just goes to show how reliant you get on technology!

i put them in foil for about 45 mins - 1 hour depending on size then take the foil off for the last 10 mins

Wheelybug · 29/11/2007 18:25

roll them in olive oil first.

nutcracker · 29/11/2007 18:25

I wouldn't have a clue either, always do mine in micro.

Don't they take ages in the oven ?

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 29/11/2007 18:26

i never miccy potatoes - reminiscent of student life! pop in oven nice and hot 200+ and 40 mins to an hour voila yum

LadySnotsalot · 29/11/2007 18:26

if you put a metal skewer through them they will cook quicker.

Slubberdegullion · 29/11/2007 18:26

How have you never done them in the oven????? They are gopping in the microwave and delicious wonderment in the oven Crispy Skins for a start.

You can stick a squewer through the middle if you want them done a bit quicker (like 45 mins)

they're vile in the microwave. Skewer, brush with oil. Oven high 220 degrees, gas mark erm...high. 45 mins.

callmeovercautious · 29/11/2007 18:29

I have done them in the oven but not for years (since I got the microwave).

Much nicer done slowly in the oven. They always seem so traumatised when they're done in the microwave .

WendyWeber · 29/11/2007 18:31

My microwave has a grill and they do get a bit crispy in there. If you have a lot to do though, oven is quicker (and nicer, I admit)

WendyWeber · 29/11/2007 18:31

foil? why foil?

Tamum · 29/11/2007 18:31

Oh yes, loads nicer in the oven, they're always s insipid and flabby when they've been microwaved.

Anna8888 · 29/11/2007 18:38

Turn on oven at 180°/200°.

Rub butter all over the potatoes.

Put in an oven dish.

Leave in oven for an hour or so till crispy.

pointydog · 29/11/2007 18:44

don't bother with foil. what a faff. Hot oven, 200, prick 'em. I give them hour and a quaRTER to hour and a half depending on size of spud.

VictorianSqualor · 29/11/2007 18:48

I never put mine in a dish, just on the rack in the oven, put a dish under it if you like but I think theyre best done on the wire.

nannyL · 29/11/2007 18:52

I do 1 hours and 46 minutes (dont ask why, i just alsways do that amount of time) at 180 in a non fan assisted oven

prick them with a fork first and leave them to it

DarthVader · 29/11/2007 18:53

Smothering in oil/butter is a new one on me. Obviously calorific version, but do they taste nicer like that?

It is about time we had a definitive baked potato thread

Anna8888 · 29/11/2007 18:54

The butter makes the jackets crisper/thicker. Yum.

Bundle · 29/11/2007 18:55

yuk to butter. surely only once they're cooked, and inside? and fluff it up
