The microwave has died - how do I do Jacket potatoes in the oven?

They are in there atm, just scrubbed and put on the shelf. Should I put them in foil? What temp? and how long?

I am so ashamed, I know this is almost as bad as asking how to boil an egg - just goes to show how reliant you get on technology!

OK, I think they are done - as I said they were already in there when I posted and they seem fine without foil. The proof will be in the eating. I will let you know. Perhaps I will be converted and not bother with a new microwave

Who knew Jacket Spuds would cause such discussion?

Slubber - I haven't heard the word gopping for ages! Good word.

Agree. Micro spuds are yuk.

slubber - i have only one friend who uses that word and i love her for it
she is POSH!

olive oil and salt rubbed in to skin make them truly delicious. imo better the longer you leave them in oven - we always aim for 1 and half hour when we can. soooo delicious when cooked properly. so disappointing and sub standard when not!

marthaboo · 29/11/2007 21:14

Don't get a new microwave - get a combi microwave. Then you can have crispy skinned jacket potatoes done in (almost) microwave timings. Fanbloodytastic. And I'm sure you can use it for all sorts of other things too

OK - update:

I have just had the BEST jacket spud of my life!

Cod is not only the Goddess of fashion but also spuds

I will be trying out the various suggestions for butter/olive oil/foil/no foil etc over the next few weeks and will report back

I will be getting a new microwave though - where else can I cook my scrambled eggs?

oooh, will wtach with interest!

( totally agree with you about micro'd scrambled eggs. yum-my )

Anna8888 · 30/11/2007 08:33

Scrambled eggs are much, much yummier cooked in pan too

pointydog · 30/11/2007 19:03

I don't believe anything tastes better when cooked in microwave

PanTheBruce · 30/11/2007 19:07

isn't cooking potatoes in the oven extremely damaging to the environment, in terms of fossil fuels burned for a couple of spuds???

callmeovercautious · 30/11/2007 22:43

Now this is my concern - therefore I will be baking lots of cakes whilst carrying out my Spud experiment (yum!)

frozen peas are, pd

also much easier because they turn themselves off.

My microwave has a gratin setting for frozen things with cheese or potato on top, and those are v good and much quicker than th'oven. Chilled curries come out well too. (But then we are a ready-meal-hell household )

JodieG1 · 03/12/2007 09:09

I use delia's method sometimes and everyone loves them. Rub in olive oil and then sea salt and bake for about 2 hours. They come out lovely and crispy on the outside and fluffy inside.

JodieG1 · 03/12/2007 09:09

Oh and make sure you prick them too.

kittylouise · 03/12/2007 09:16

Always cook jacket spuds half and half, probably because by the time I get in from work haven't got time to wait for 2 hours for jacket spuds. I throw them in the microwave for 8 minutes, then finish them off in very hot oven for about 30-40 minutes, I like the skin really crispy.

That's the only thing I use the microwave for really, other than to reheat leftovers and gone-cold cups of tea (which always makes dp gag)
