Gusto boxes

Just started the gusto boxes. Would anyone like to swap recipe choices? / hints?

I’m cooking the prawn farfalle today - about to serve it for lunch but baffled the online recipe and physical recipe card don’t match. One says rocket one says pea shoots - I assume that’s a sub but weird that it’s the physical version that’s correct!

Has anyone else made this one? Or have any tips on choosing gusto meals?

We had the Thai curry last week but I wasn’t wowed by it. We had a paneer and spinach curry tonight and my ten year old was raving about it! My kids are so fussy but seem to have accepted paneer. I also ordered the mushroom stroganoff and ratatouille pasta bake which both look yummy.
We’re having the mean free enchiladas for the second time, they went down really well last time.

SpamIAm · 14/06/2021 20:15

I enjoyed the hoisin chicken, would probably make it again. My DH did pick all his spring greens out like a child though.

pinkchampagne1 · 14/06/2021 20:31

Maybe I messed my hoisin chicken up a bit (I’d had a glass of wine before!) but I found it a little dry and for us it just kind of lacked the wow factor.

What meals have you got coming this week?

SpamIAm · 14/06/2021 21:58

It wasn't wow but was nice enough that I'd happily add it to our list of meals. I normally make everything too wet, but I actually got this one just right (which possibly means it was supposed to be dry). Oh I also put the garlic in with the chicken instead of the noodles because there were just too many kids making noise 😂

I've got the buffalo chicken, Kansas bbq chicken, Thai wraps and Spanish sausage salad this week.

pinkchampagne1 · 14/06/2021 22:07

Ooh, nice choices! I really liked the look of the Thai wraps and the buffalo chicken but have held off ordering a box as we have bought quite a few of the spices now so are planning to recreate some of our favourites.

SpamIAm · 14/06/2021 22:23

Yeah I think this will be our last one for a while, then we'll have to go through our recipe cards and try and remember which ones we liked to recreate.

We had the MindfulChef chicken last night which was excellent - with roasted tomato’s that came with asparagus and spinach plus a potato and pea mash with a pesto dressing. Was actually lovely so would cook it again. Kids loved the chicken and did plain potatoes for them but turned down every other bit of the meal Grin

pinkchampagne1 · 15/06/2021 16:49

Wow, that sounds amazing! Do you think you are a Mindful Chef convert now or will you go back to Gousto?

I am not very impressed with the new Gousto recipe choices for the week after next again.

bonfireheart · 15/06/2021 17:40

@pinkchampagne1 I put three gousto meals in my basket cos had 20% off...but even then they were all a bit meh for the price so I took them all out!

pinkchampagne1 · 15/06/2021 17:51

I don’t blame you! The selections have been really rubbish over the last few weeks, haven’t they?

pinkchampagne1 · 15/06/2021 19:59

We have just cooked up the feta cheese and tomato farfelle. Just looked up the recipe and it was so easy and really tasty.

bitheby · 16/06/2021 20:10

Anybody has the chicken tinga wraps? They're delicious. I've had them before. But I find all the liquid contents spill out and it's really messy to eat. Wonder if I'm doing something wrong.

pinkchampagne1 · 16/06/2021 21:06

I think I have had them before. Are they the chicken ones with lime Mayo? I can’t remember how messy they were to eat though.

Foxhasbigsocks · 17/06/2021 06:06

Had another MindfulChef meal - lamb with jersey royals and a homemade sauce. The meat quality was very good, but I find it faffy that they don’t give you exact quantities eg they gave 25g honey when you only needed one tbsp. In that respect gusto is better because there is almost nothing you need to measure out (lazy!)

Foxhasbigsocks · 17/06/2021 06:08

This week we are having another MindfulChef - this time deliberately. I’ve paused gusto for a few weeks. So we are having chicken tikka masala, honey and sesame chicken (free range), crispy fish pie

Foxhasbigsocks · 17/06/2021 06:11

Price wise this week’s box is £70 for 3 meals whereas gusto would have been just under £60 for 4 meals, so quite a difference. We won’t be able to do MindfulChef every week due to price

Stealthynamechange · 17/06/2021 06:24

Hi all I lost this thread 🤦‍♀️ but have enjoyed catching up, good to hear the mindful chef reviews - that price is shocking though!

I've got the marmite veggie burger sat in my basket - not tried any of the other burgers, couldn't get my head around the cream tea one at all!

pinkchampagne1 · 17/06/2021 06:49

I have the marmite burger sat in my basket too. It’s the only one that has slightly tempted me so far. I also selected the smoky Spanish chicken, Patatas Brava and the cod with coconut curry. Might change them again before now and delivery date though! Quite tempted by the mushroom stroganoff too.

Wow, the Mindful Chef is expensive! My last Gousto was around £48 for 4 meals for 4 people so that’s a big difference.

SpamIAm · 17/06/2021 18:37

So the box I thought I was getting today I'm actually getting next Thursday because I skipped a week and now I have nothing to feed anyone until I go shopping again Monday. Oops 🙈😂

helpfulperson · 17/06/2021 18:51

I had the carbonara risotto last week. I'll definitely make that again.

bonfireheart · 17/06/2021 18:52

Had the Greek Lentil Moussaka today. Don't know how to describe it!!

pinkchampagne1 · 17/06/2021 20:00

bonfireheart, was it good? I had the lamb moussaka last week and we enjoyed it.

bonfireheart · 17/06/2021 21:31

I don't know how to describe it. I was expecting it to be saucy and melty cheese but there wasn't enough cheese, just tasted of lentils with no real flavour couldn't really taste the cinnamon or the oregano... was filling, and not exactly awful, but wouldn't order again.

bonfireheart · 17/06/2021 21:33

Have paused my box. The veg options for next two weeks are totally uninspiring and honestly they must have lots of spaghetti left over on their warehouse cos so many spaghetti recipes. And I still maintain that if you order a fully veg box it should be cheaper. No way are a couple of pasta dishes and a cauliflower dish the same cost as some of the meat dishes.

pinkchampagne1 · 17/06/2021 21:44

Oh that doesn’t sound great. Mine was quite saucy and cheesy last week but a bit of a faff to make.

I agree that the options for the next few weeks aren’t great. I am not vegetarian but I found the choices to be disappointing too.
