What are those little minty ball things called - and how do you make them (and other questions about little things)

i want to make some little things to give as gifts. Usually do muffins/cookies etc so want to do something v cute.

Mate recommended little minty icing sugary ball things in tiny metallic cases (am i making any sense here?) but wasn't sure how to make them.

ooh what about truffles? Hard to make?

Any other ideas?

do you mean peppermint balls? I used to make them with my mum, but for the life of me can't remember how.

peppermint creams? icing sugar, dried milk (I think) and peppermint essence.

that crunchie stuff Nigella made last night was golden syrup mixed with white sugar and heated up. When it was all bubbling she threw in a couple of big dessert spoonfuls of bicarb and beated the mixure with a wooden spoon for 15 seconds or so. She then turned it out onto a tray to set and cool.

Also - we are going on hols to a farm in Devon at the end of the month, we've stayed with them loads of times and they're like friends so I wanted to take a presetn. Plus its my mum's DH's birthday while we are away (they are coming with us)
