Five a day in one go

Is there such a concoction that you can get your 5 a day in one go?

my kids have a fruit salad every night ( has become a routine now, after bath) with a chopped up apple, satsuma, grapes, sultanas and strawberries - in a bowl in front of the TV. So yep, there's a concoction for you.

FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 17:39

Well, a large bowl of vegetable soup with beans, or a huge smoothie containing 5 portions of fruits blended, would do it, but so would a v large bowl of vegetable stew, a v big plate of stir fry, or a bowl of cereal with 5 fruits chopped into it

5 portions of f+V takes up quite a lot of room however you eat it, it can't be condensed into something small

would you like a link showing the sizes of different portions?

bundle · 03/07/2007 17:40

blitz veg (onions, carrots, celery, courgettes) in food processor (hand blender works in small amounts) and saute, then add tinned tomatoes, blitz again when simmered for about half an hour (add basil/thyme/garlic if you like) and use as pasta sauce. serve before emma's fruit salad.

Mercy · 03/07/2007 17:43

Franny's right re portion size. I think it would be have to be 2 separate things tbh - huge veg stir fry followed by fruit salad for example

ruddynorah · 03/07/2007 17:45

the blitzing/pureeing/blending takes away the 5 a day value of a fruit. i think a smoothie of 5 fruits only counts as 1 portion or something. you can't just drink 5 glasses of juice for your 5 a day.

saggers · 03/07/2007 17:48

I'd be interested to see that link, please F&Z.

prufrock · 03/07/2007 17:48

smoothie does count, juice doesn't. Blitzing the whole fruit(bananas, berries etc) doesn't take away anything. Juicing, and discarding the pulp, does.

MissTea4Me · 03/07/2007 17:49

Variation on bundle's: roast tomatoes with any or all of the following: onion, garlic, peppers, courgettes, fennel, aubergine, herbs in the oven with a little olive oil for about an hour. Whizz as smooth or chunky as you like with food processor or hand blender and use as pasta sauce or with polenta.

Mercy · 03/07/2007 17:50

Juice counts as one portion per day.

It's the portion size that counts as well as the variety. Size matters

Mercy · 03/07/2007 17:54

Found this

portion sizes - fruit

portion sizes - veg

FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 17:56

follow link at bottom of page for detailed info

Anyone who likes talking about eating fruit and veg is welcome on 10 / 10 thread

FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 17:57

I often eat 5 portions a day for my breakfast, so it is entirely possible, but it is a big bowl of stuff

Judy1234 · 03/07/2007 18:46

I often have 10! But then I can eat 4 bananas at once etc.

Judy1234 · 03/07/2007 18:46

Not 10 at once of course.

ernest · 03/07/2007 18:53

does 2 pieces of same thing count as 2 portions? I thought it had to be 5 different things, and I also thought it was recommended 2 fruit & 3 veg, 5 fruit not optimal...? But I am crap so sorry...........

FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 18:59

Ernest a variety is recommended, with more veg than fruit also being recommended

but for optimal health, we should really be eating many more portions a day, in Japan they are recommended to eat 17 portions

the gov's message of "5 a day" is deliberately kept simple and achievable to encourage people attain it

KrustyTheClown · 03/07/2007 19:09

I feel a bit simple aiming for 5 now

how disappointing

sarz · 03/07/2007 19:21

Profrock, smoothie and juice can both be one portion, but not all five, because by smoothing it, your body doesnt have to break down the fruits/veg and so does not get as much benefit.

Clementine, is this for you or your children?

sarz · 03/07/2007 19:22

Krusty, i easily eat 10 or more everyday, and it really isnt that hard and doesnt take to much effort, you should try tomorrow!! Join the 10/10 thread and see what everyone else is eating and you will soon be on your way!

KrustyTheClown · 03/07/2007 19:53

well if the Japanese get to aim for 17, it feels a bit Dumb Down Britain that we are told to aim for 5.

Judy1234 · 03/07/2007 19:58

Apparently the Government picked 5 at random as so many British people barely managed 1.

3andnomore · 03/07/2007 20:01

Juicing will give you however many portions of fruit and veg as you put in...admitttedly, you take out much of the fiber, unless you also put some fruit in the blnder and make a smoothie of Juice and Fruit or also add something like Psylliam Husk which is fabulous fiber...I know governemnt guidlines say Juice is to be counted as one portion, but I believe that must count for the shop bought one, of which most shouldn't be counted as any towards your daily intake.

Clementine1 · 03/07/2007 20:08

sorry I should have said - this is for my children.

OP posts:
snowwonder · 03/07/2007 20:09

i read something that they wanted to recommend 10 portions a day but felt that would be to scary and put people off, 5 is more managable,

do the 10/10 club eat 10 portions?

FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 20:23

Juicing means you don't get the fibre from the fruit or veg, which contributes a large part of the health benefits

On the 10 / 10 thread we all aim for 10 f+v every day.
